What to Have Ready Before You Call Business Services
Calling without the right details usually means calling twice. Have these ready:
- Your Minnesota file number (sometimes called the Business ID). It’s on your original filing confirmation, and you can also find it by searching your entity on the Secretary of State’s online business search tool.
- The exact legal name of the business as it appears on your filings. Not a trade name, not an abbreviation.
- The specific transaction you’re asking about — annual renewal, amendment, reinstatement, certificate of good standing, or another filing type.
Clerks handle a high volume of calls. The more precise you are up front, the faster you get an answer.
When You Don’t Need to Call
A lot of what people phone about can be done on the website. At sos.mn.gov you can search existing business filings, submit new filings, renew an entity, and check voter registration.5Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State. Voter registration lookups live on a separate site, mnvotes.sos.mn.gov. The database updates nightly, and election officials may take up to 14 days to process a new registration, so a recent application may not appear right away.7Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State. Find Your Minnesota Voter Registration Annual business renewals are also handled online and cost nothing to file. Missing the deadline is what costs you: an LLC that skips its renewal is administratively terminated and has to be reinstated to return to active status.8Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State.
