Mississippi CDL Permit Test Requirements: Docs, Exams, and Scheduling

To meet Mississippi’s CDL permit test requirements, you must already hold a Mississippi Class R driver’s license, bring proof of identity, residency, and a current federal medical certificate to a Department of Public Safety Driver Service Bureau, pay a $16 fee, pass a vision screening, and score at least 80 percent on a 50-question general knowledge exam. Any endorsements you want on the permit require their own written tests the same day.1DPS Driver Service Bureau. Driver Service Fees

Who Can Apply

Mississippi sets the default minimum age for a Commercial Learner’s Permit at 21.2Mississippi Legislature. Mississippi Code 63-1-208 – Commercial Drivers License and Commercial Learners Permit Requirements An 18-year-old can get a CLP restricted to intrastate driving only, which means no crossing state lines.3Mississippi Legislature. Mississippi Code 63-1-211 – Contents of License Interstate freight requires waiting until 21.4Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. You also need a valid Mississippi Class R license on file before DPS will process the CLP application.5Cornell Law Institute. 31 Miss Code R 1-10.1 – CDL Application Procedures for Testing You must be a Mississippi resident, and your driving record must be clear in every state where you’ve ever been licensed. An active suspension, revocation, or disqualification anywhere in the country blocks the application.

Documents to Bring to the Driver Service Bureau

Showing up short on paperwork means another trip. Gather all of this first:

  • Proof of citizenship or legal residency: certified birth certificate, valid U.S. passport, or permanent resident card.
  • Original Social Security card. Not a photocopy.
  • Two separate proof-of-residency documents showing your current Mississippi address, such as utility bills or bank statements.
  • A completed Medical Examiner’s Certificate (Form MCSA-5876) from a provider listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.6Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Medical Examiners Certificate MCSA-58767eCFR. 49 CFR Part 391 – Qualifications of Drivers and Longer Combination Vehicle Driver Instructors
  • A completed CDL application form, available at DPS offices or the DPS website, with your vehicle class (A, B, or C) and any endorsements marked.

Pick the Right Self-Certification Category

The application asks you to choose one of four categories describing the type of driving you plan to do. The choice controls whether the state has to keep your medical certificate on file, and picking wrong can delay your permit or create problems when you try to schedule a skills test.8Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. How Do I Determine Which of the 4 Categories of Commercial Motor Vehicle Operation I Should Self Certify

  • Non-Excepted Interstate: general commercial driving across state lines. Medical certificate required on file. Most commercial drivers belong here.
  • Excepted Interstate: crossing state lines only for specific exempt activities, such as transporting school children or driving a government vehicle. No medical certificate filing.
  • Non-Excepted Intrastate: driving only within Mississippi under the state’s medical certification rules.
  • Excepted Intrastate: driving only within Mississippi for activities Mississippi has exempted from medical certification.

The Written Exams

Every CLP applicant takes a general knowledge test with 50 multiple-choice questions covering vehicle safety, cargo handling, pre-trip inspections, and Mississippi traffic laws. You need 40 correct, or 80 percent, to pass. Phones, notes, and other study aids stay out of the testing area.

If you want endorsements on your permit, you take those knowledge tests the same visit. Mississippi offers:9Mississippi Department of Public Safety. Driver Information

  • Air Brakes, required if your vehicle uses air brakes. 20 questions, 80 percent to pass. Skip it and your CLP carries an air brake restriction.
  • T, double and triple trailers. Knowledge test only.
  • N, tank vehicle. Knowledge test only.
  • P, passenger. Knowledge test now; skills test later.
  • H, hazardous materials. Knowledge test plus a separate federal background check.
  • X, the combined hazmat and tank endorsement.

Start the Hazmat Background Check Early

The H endorsement sits apart from the others because the Transportation Security Administration runs fingerprinting and a background check before the state will add it. You apply at a TSA enrollment center and pay a non-refundable $85.25, or $41 if you already hold a valid TWIC card and Mississippi accepts the TWIC threat assessment for hazmat purposes. TSA recommends starting at least 60 days before you need the endorsement, since some checks run well past a month.10Transportation Security Administration. HAZMAT Endorsement

If You Fail

A failed knowledge test does not shut you out. Mississippi lets you retake the exam after a waiting period, though DPS does not prominently publish specific days. Expect additional fees for repeat attempts, and expect the questions to change between tries. Study during the wait rather than rushing back.

Scheduling and Testing Day

Mississippi DPS books CDL services through an online appointment system. Choose “Commercial Driver License,” then the CDL Learner’s Permit Knowledge Test option.11Mississippi Department of Public Safety. Make Your Appointment Not every DPS location handles commercial licensing, so confirm your chosen office offers CLP testing before you drive out.

At the bureau, a clerk reviews your documents, verifies the medical certificate, and runs a vision screening against the minimum visual acuity standards. Once you clear those steps, you pay the $16 CLP fee.1DPS Driver Service Bureau. Driver Service Fees The written tests run on a computer terminal under a proctor’s eye. Pass, and the bureau prints a temporary paper CLP on the spot.

How Long the Permit Lasts

Your CLP is valid for six months from the date of issue.1DPS Driver Service Bureau. Driver Service Fees If it expires before you finish your skills test, you reapply and pay again. Any practice driving must happen with a licensed CDL holder in the front passenger seat (or directly behind you in a passenger vehicle) who carries the correct class and endorsements for the vehicle.12eCFR. 49 CFR 383.25 – Commercial Learners Permit

What the Permit Test Does Not Cover

Passing the knowledge exams gets you the permit, not the license. Federal rules in effect since February 2022 also require most new applicants to complete Entry-Level Driver Training from a provider on FMCSA’s Training Provider Registry before they can sit for the CDL skills test.13eCFR. 49 CFR Part 380 – Special Training Requirements ELDT applies to first-time Class A or Class B applicants, drivers upgrading from Class B to Class A, and anyone adding a P, S, or H endorsement for the first time.14Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Entry-Level Driver Training ELDT A separate federal 14-day waiting period runs from the day your CLP is issued before you can take the skills test.12eCFR. 49 CFR 383.25 – Commercial Learners Permit Neither requirement affects the permit test itself, but both shape how much of your six months you have left afterward, so plan backward from the day your permit expires.
