Mississippi Concealed Carry Reciprocity Map & Permit Rules

Mississippi concealed carry reciprocity runs in both directions, and generously. More than 30 states recognize a Mississippi permit, and Mississippi recognizes every valid, unexpired concealed carry permit issued by another state. Which states honor your Mississippi license depends on whether you hold the standard permit or the enhanced endorsement, because some states only accept the enhanced version.1DPS Driver Service Bureau. Which States Honor a Mississippi Permit

Reciprocity exists for three different reasons, and the practical result for you is the same in each case. Some states have signed formal agreements with the Mississippi Department of Public Safety. Others have passed laws recognizing every valid out-of-state permit without needing an agreement. And a growing number have adopted permitless carry, which makes the paperwork question moot for anyone legally allowed to possess a firearm.

All four of Mississippi’s neighbors — Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Tennessee — honor Mississippi permits. Georgia maintains a formal reciprocity list that includes Mississippi.2Georgia Department of Public Safety. Georgia’s Firearm Permit Reciprocity Arizona, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Texas recognize any valid out-of-state permit or have moved to permitless carry, so your Mississippi license works there without a specific agreement in place. Virginia recognizes Mississippi permits as long as the holder is at least 21, carries a valid photo ID, and presents both documents when asked.3Virginia State Police. The DPS publishes the current reciprocity list and updates it as other states change their laws. Check it before every trip, because an agreement that existed last year is not guaranteed to exist today.1DPS Driver Service Bureau. With What Other States Does Mississippi Have Reciprocity?

Why the Enhanced Endorsement Matters for Travel

Mississippi’s standard permit has no training requirement. Several states will only honor an out-of-state permit if the holder has completed a documented firearms safety course, and for Mississippi residents that proof only exists on the enhanced endorsement. If you travel out of state with any regularity, the enhanced version is the practical choice even if you have no interest in the extra locations it unlocks inside Mississippi.

To earn the enhanced endorsement, you first obtain the standard permit, then voluntarily complete a firearms safety course that includes both classroom instruction and live-fire exercises. The instructor must be certified by a nationally recognized firearms training organization or approved by the Mississippi Department of Public Safety.4Justia Law. Mississippi Code 97-37-7 – Deadly Weapons; Persons Permitted to Carry Weapons Once you finish the course, the DPS Gun Permits Division affixes a sticker to your existing permit indicating you hold the enhanced endorsement.5Legal Information Institute. 31 Miss. Code. R. 1-15.1 – Enhanced Conceal and Carry Endorsement Private instructors typically charge $75 to $150 for the course itself.

Whenever you carry under a Mississippi permit, you must have both the permit and a valid government-issued ID on your person and must show both if a law enforcement officer asks. Failing to produce them is a noncriminal violation that carries a $25 fine by summons.6Justia Law. Mississippi Code 45-9-101 – License to Carry Stun Gun, Concealed Pistol or Revolver The same documentation habit will serve you in every reciprocity state, and some require it by statute.

Which Out-of-State Permits Mississippi Honors

Mississippi takes the simplest possible approach to incoming visitors. State law recognizes any valid, unexpired, and unrevoked concealed carry permit issued by another state.6Justia Law. Mississippi Code 45-9-101 – License to Carry Stun Gun, Concealed Pistol or Revolver There is no approved list to check, no training condition, and no requirement that your home state have a written agreement with Mississippi. If your permit is current and legitimate, Mississippi honors it.

The DPS is also authorized to enter into formal written reciprocity agreements with states that require one before they will recognize Mississippi permits. Those agreements benefit Mississippi residents traveling to those states; they do not change anything for visitors coming into Mississippi, who are already covered.6Justia Law. Visitors Without Any Permit

If you are traveling from a state that does not issue permits, or your permit has lapsed, you still have legal paths to carry inside Mississippi. Since 2016, state law does not treat a handgun carried in a belt holster, shoulder holster, or sheath as “concealed,” even if the holster is partially hidden by clothing. You can carry a loaded handgun on your person in one of those holsters without any license, provided you are not in a prohibited location, engaged in criminal activity, or otherwise barred from firearm possession under state or federal law.7Justia Law. Mississippi Code 97-37-1 – Deadly Weapons; Carrying While Concealed; Use or Attempt to Use

Anyone 18 or older can also carry a concealed handgun inside a motor vehicle, inside their home or business, or on real property connected to the home or business, and may carry a loaded handgun inside a purse, handbag, briefcase, satchel, or fully enclosed case without a permit.8DPS Driver Service Bureau. Driving Through a State That Won’t Honor Your Permit

Reciprocity is a state-by-state matter, so a trip from Mississippi to a reciprocity state can still cross a state that does not recognize your permit. Federal law offers a narrow safe harbor. The Firearm Owners Protection Act allows you to transport a firearm through any state as long as you can legally possess it at both your origin and your destination. The conditions are strict: the firearm must be unloaded, and neither the gun nor the ammunition can be readily accessible from the passenger compartment.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 USC 926A – Interstate Transportation of Firearms

If your vehicle has a trunk, lock the unloaded firearm and ammunition in the trunk. For a truck, SUV, or any vehicle without a separate trunk, the firearm or ammunition must be in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 USC 926A – Interstate Transportation of Firearms The federal protection covers transport only. It does not let you stop overnight, run errands, or do anything more than pass through, and some states are known for aggressively enforcing their own laws against travelers claiming federal protection. Plan the route accordingly.

Check the List Before You Leave

Reciprocity lists change. States add training conditions, drop old agreements, or go permitless, and the only reliable source for your trip is the current DPS reciprocity page combined with the destination state’s own guidance.1DPS Driver Service Bureau. Before you cross a state line, confirm three things: that the destination still recognizes Mississippi permits, that it recognizes your version (standard or enhanced), and whether it imposes conditions like a minimum age or a duty to notify officers on contact.
