Mississippi Phone Numbers: State Agencies & Departments

Mississippi doesn’t have a single switchboard for state government, so getting help quickly means dialing the agency that actually handles your issue. The Mississippi state agency phone numbers below cover the departments residents call most often — business filings, taxes, driver’s licenses, unemployment, child support, consumer complaints, and legal aid. Unless noted, phone hours run Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Secretary of State: Business Filings

Call the Business Services division at 601-359-1633 for questions about forming an entity, searching existing filings, notary commissions, UCC filings, or checking the status of a submission.1Mississippi Secretary of State. Business FAQs Have the exact legal name of the business or its business identification number ready. Staff can pull up a record much faster with either of those than with a general description.

If you’re calling about an annual report, know the deadline before you dial. For-profit corporations and LLCs file by April 15; nonprofits have until May 15. Missing it can result in administrative dissolution, which strips the entity of its good standing and authority to do business in Mississippi.2Mississippi Secretary of State. Annual Reports

Department of Revenue: Taxes and Vehicles

The Department of Revenue uses two different numbers depending on what you need:

Any call about a tax account requires identity verification, so keep your Social Security number or your tax account ID from a previous return or notice within reach. A copy of your most recent W-2 or 1099 helps if there’s a discrepancy to work through.

One point worth confirming with the agent: a filing extension to October 15 does not extend the time to pay. Any amount owed is still due by April 15, and penalties and interest start accruing after that date.4Mississippi Department of Revenue. Individual Income Tax Frequently Asked Questions

Department of Public Safety: Driver’s License and ID

Driver’s licenses, state ID cards, and firearms permits all run through the Department of Public Safety. The main Highway Safety Patrol number, which oversees the Driver Service Bureau, is 601-987-1212.5Mississippi Department of Public Safety. Highway Patrol

For driver’s license renewals, appointment scheduling, and routine driver services questions, a separate live support line is available at 601-487-7028 during the same business hours.6Mississippi Department of Public Safety. Contact Us Accident reports and copies of driving records go through the main Highway Safety Patrol number, where the call is routed to the records division.

Department of Employment Security: Unemployment Claims

To file or check the status of an unemployment claim, call the MDES Contact Center at 601-493-9427.7Mississippi Department of Employment Security. Unemployment Claims

MDES does not handle wage disputes or most workplace labor complaints. If an employer is withholding pay or violating overtime rules, MDES directs callers to the U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division, because Mississippi relies on federal enforcement for most wage and hour protections rather than running its own state program.8Mississippi Department of Employment Security. Attorney General: Consumer Fraud and Identity Theft

The Attorney General’s main office number is 601-359-3680.9MS.GOV. Attorney General For consumer fraud, scams, and identity theft, the Consumer Protection Division has its own line:

  • Email: consumer@ago.ms.gov10Attorney General Lynn Fitch. Identity Theft Brochure

Gather your documentation before calling. Copies of signed contracts, advertisements, receipts, and written correspondence with the other party give investigators what they need to evaluate the complaint. Include specific dates and dollar amounts. The same Consumer Protection line is where identity theft victims request a packet to begin the Identity Theft Passport process.

Department of Human Services: Child Support and SNAP

The Department of Human Services runs child support enforcement, SNAP food assistance, and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. Two toll-free lines handle most calls:

  • Child Support Call Center: 877-882-491611Mississippi Department of Human Services. Contact Us
  • SNAP (call or text): 1-800-948-305012Mississippi Department of Human Services. SNAP Archives

Have your case number ready. Without it, representatives have limited ability to pull up specific information.

Legal Aid and Attorney Referrals

The Mississippi Bar’s general number is 601-948-4471 and can point you toward an attorney with the right specialization. Define the legal issue as specifically as you can before calling. “I have a landlord-tenant dispute over a security deposit” gets you to the right attorney faster than “I need a lawyer.”

If you can’t afford a private attorney, Mississippi has free civil legal aid for residents whose household income falls below 125% of the federal poverty level:
