Mississippi Taxpayer Access Point: File, Pay, and Track Refunds

The Mississippi Taxpayer Access Point, known as TAP, is the free online portal run by the Mississippi Department of Revenue (MDOR) at tap.dor.ms.gov. You use it to register a business for state taxes, file and amend most business returns, make payments on any state tax, and manage your accounts with the MDOR. All you need is an internet connection and, once you’ve set up a login, the identifying information the MDOR uses to match you to its records.

What TAP Lets You Do

What’s available in TAP depends on who you are.

Businesses get the broadest functionality. Through TAP, a business can register for new tax accounts, file and amend returns, make electronic payments, and review MDOR correspondence.1Mississippi Department of Revenue. E-Services Tax types you can file online include:

  • Sales and use tax, along with special city and county taxes, occupancy tax, motor vehicle rental, waste tire, and prepaid wireless E911
  • Withholding tax
  • Gaming tax
  • Insurance premium tax
  • Beer and tobacco excise taxes, plus permits
  • Finance privilege tax

Individual taxpayers use TAP more narrowly. One important boundary: you do not file your annual Mississippi individual income tax return inside TAP. That return goes through a third-party software provider. TAP is where you view your income tax account, check refund status, update your address, and make payments on returns, estimated taxes, or billings.1Mississippi Department of Revenue. E-Services The same split applies to corporate income and franchise tax and pass-through entity returns: the annual return itself is submitted through a filing provider, while payments and account management happen in TAP.

Setting Up Your TAP Account

Go to tap.dor.ms.gov and create a user profile. Pick a username, set a strong password, and choose security questions for account recovery. That initial step only creates your login; it doesn’t yet connect you to any tax records.

Linking as an Individual

To pull up your existing records, verify your identity using your Social Security Number and information from a previously filed Mississippi return.2Mississippi Department of Revenue. Taxpayer Access Point Registration Once the system matches you against MDOR records, you’ll see your account history, balances, and correspondence.

Linking as a Business

Business taxpayers verify with their Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN) and the MDOR account numbers for each tax type they need to manage.2Mississippi Department of Revenue. Taxpayer Access Point Registration Sole proprietors without a FEIN can use their SSN or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). Corporations, partnerships, and LLCs may also be asked for their Mississippi Secretary of State Business ID.

If you’re starting a new business, you can register for state tax accounts directly in TAP rather than mailing paper forms. The registration walks you through entity type, business address, expected start date, and a NAICS code for your industry.

Filing Returns

Log in and go to your list of linked tax accounts. TAP shows the current filing period for each one. Selecting a tax type opens either a guided interview or a digital version of the MDOR form.

A sales tax return, for example, asks for total gross sales, any exempt sales or deductions, and the tax collected. TAP validates the math and flags common errors before you submit, which cuts down on the correction cycle that paper returns used to require. A summary page shows your calculated liability before you commit. Review it carefully; once you submit, the return goes straight to the MDOR.

If you spot an error after filing, TAP lets you amend the return online instead of mailing a paper amendment.3Mississippi Department of Revenue. Online Filing

Making a Payment

ACH Debit From Your Bank Account

The most common method is ACH debit. You authorize the MDOR to pull funds directly from your bank account by entering the routing and account numbers, then choose the payment type: return, estimated payment, or billing. There is no fee for ACH payments through TAP.4Mississippi Department of Revenue. Individual Income Tax Frequently Asked Questions Watch the payment date you schedule. It cannot fall after the tax’s due date without triggering penalties and interest. Save the confirmation number TAP gives you after a successful submission.

Credit Card

Credit card payments go through a third-party vendor called NIC Mississippi, at ms.gov/dor/quickpay.5Mississippi Department of Revenue. Business Tax Frequently Asked Questions The vendor charges a convenience fee on top of your tax, shown before you confirm. On a large bill that fee adds up, so ACH is usually the better choice when you have one.

Deadlines to Watch

Individual Income Tax

Your 2025 Mississippi individual income tax return is due April 15, 2026. An extension pushes the filing deadline to October 15, 2026, but only the paperwork. Any tax you owe still has to be paid by April 15 to avoid penalties.4Mississippi Department of Revenue. Individual Income Tax Frequently Asked Questions

Estimated tax payments follow the usual quarterly schedule: April 15, June 15, and September 15 of the tax year, plus January 15 of the following year. You can make all of those in TAP.

Sales and Use Tax

Filing frequency depends on annual liability:

  • Less than $600 per year: file annually
  • $600 to $3,599 per year: file quarterly
  • More than $3,599 per year: file monthly

Whatever the frequency, each return is due on or before the 20th day after the reporting period ends.6Mississippi Department of Revenue. Reporting Requirements A monthly filer’s January return is due February 20; a quarterly filer’s first quarter is due April 20.

Corporate Income and Franchise Tax

Corporation returns are due on the 15th day of the fourth month after the accounting year closes, which is April 15 for calendar-year filers.4Mississippi Department of Revenue. Individual Income Tax Frequently Asked Questions The annual return is filed through a software provider; estimated payments and any balance due go through TAP.

What Late Filing or Payment Costs

The MDOR charges penalties and interest separately, and they stack. For individual income tax:

  • Late filing penalty of 5% of the tax due per month or partial month, capped at 25%, with a $100 minimum even when the tax owed is less
  • Late payment penalty of 0.5% of the tax due per month, also capped at 25%, running from the original due date
  • Interest of 0.5% per month on the unpaid balance, starting from the original due date

These charges run from April 15, and the late filing penalty specifically applies after the October 15 extension deadline if you requested one.7Mississippi Department of Revenue. Individual Income Tax Interest and Penalty Worksheet The practical lesson: pay what you can by April 15 even if you need the extension to finish the return. The late filing penalty is ten times the late payment penalty, so filing on time with a partial payment beats the other way around.

If You Can’t Pay in Full

Owing between $75 and $3,000 in income tax and unable to pay all at once? The MDOR offers an installment agreement that spreads the balance across 12 equal monthly payments. To qualify, you must:

  • File your return on or before the due date
  • Submit Form 71-661 with your return
  • Have filed all required income tax returns and paid all taxes due for the past five years, for both spouses if filing jointly
  • Not have entered into an installment agreement during the past five years

Miss any installment and the MDOR can cancel the agreement and demand the full remaining balance.4Mississippi Department of Revenue. Individual Income Tax Frequently Asked Questions Interest and penalties keep accruing during the plan, so the total you pay will exceed the original tax due. For balances above $3,000, you’ll need to contact the MDOR directly to discuss options.

Checking Refunds and Account Activity

The MDOR’s individual income tax page has a “Where’s My Refund?” tool you can reach from the MDOR website or through TAP.8Mississippi Department of Revenue. Individual Income Tax

Inside TAP, you can review recent account activity, current balances, return data, and correspondence the MDOR has sent you.1Mississippi Department of Revenue. E-Services Check in periodically even when you aren’t actively filing. Notices sometimes appear in TAP before the paper version reaches your mailbox.

Security and Preparer Access

TAP uses multi-factor authentication, sending a verification code to your mobile phone or email at login. Keep your contact information current so those codes actually reach you; a stale email address can lock you out at the worst time.

If you work with a tax preparer or bookkeeper, the primary account holder can grant third-party access from within TAP. You control what the preparer can see and do, so filing authority doesn’t require handing over full account control. Change your password and security questions on a regular schedule, and revoke third-party access as soon as you change preparers.
