Missouri Auto Sales Tax: Rates, Exemptions, and Deadlines

Missouri auto sales tax is 4.225% at the state level, plus whatever local rate your home address carries, so most buyers end up paying somewhere between 5% and 10% of the vehicle’s purchase price.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Buying a Vehicle You pay it at a Department of Revenue license office when you title the vehicle, not to the dealer, and you have 30 days from the purchase date before penalties start.

How the Rate Is Set

The state charges 4.225% of the purchase price. County, city, and special taxing district rates stack on top of that, and the combined total is determined by your physical street address at the time you apply for the title.2Legal Information Institute. 12 CSR 10-103.350 – Sales Tax on Motor Vehicles Buying from a dealer in a different county doesn’t change what you owe. A buyer whose address carries a 2% county tax and a 1.5% city tax would face a combined 7.725% rate on the purchase price.

Before you sign anything, run your address through the Department of Revenue’s online rate calculator so you know the exact figure.3Missouri Department of Revenue. Tax Calculator

What the Tax Is Calculated On

Missouri taxes the “purchase price,” meaning the total contract price you agreed to pay. Finance charges and interest are not part of the taxable amount.4Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 144.070 – Tax on Motor Vehicles, Trailers, Boats and Outboard Motors Two credits can reduce that figure significantly.

Trade-In Allowance

When you trade a vehicle to a dealer as part of the deal, the trade-in value comes off the price before tax is calculated. Buy a truck for $40,000 with a $15,000 trade-in, and you owe sales tax only on the remaining $25,000.5Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 144.025 – Transactions Involving Trade-In or Rebate, How Computed If the trade-in allowance is greater than the purchase price, no tax is due.2Legal Information Institute. 12 CSR 10-103.350 – Sales Tax on Motor Vehicles

If your trade happens with an out-of-state dealer, bring documentation of the allowance to the license office. A copy of the title assignment showing the trade-in value or the dealer invoice will do. Without it, you won’t get the credit.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Buying a Vehicle

Insurance Loss Credit

If your vehicle is stolen or totaled, the insurance payout plus your deductible can be applied as a credit against the price of a replacement vehicle, reducing the taxable amount. You have 180 days from the insurance payment date to purchase or contract to purchase the replacement.6Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 144.027 – Insurance Credit Against Purchase Price of Replacement Vehicle

If the lost vehicle wasn’t insured, the fair market value can serve as the credit instead, established through a standard pricing guide or the average of two dealer appraisals. For an uninsured loss, the 180-day clock runs from the date of the loss itself, certified by a law enforcement report.6Missouri Revisor of Statutes. When No Sales Tax Is Owed

Gifts Between Individuals

When someone who has already titled and paid tax on a vehicle gives it to another person as a genuine gift, the recipient owes no state or local sales tax.2Legal Information Institute. 12 CSR 10-103.350 – Sales Tax on Motor Vehicles The giver completes a gift statement that the recipient brings to the license office.7Missouri Department of Revenue. Selling a Vehicle – Gifting Your Vehicle No money can change hands. Even a nominal payment turns the transfer into a sale, and the full price becomes taxable.

Nonprofits

Religious and charitable organizations holding a valid Missouri sales tax exemption letter pay no sales tax on vehicles bought for use in their regular functions. A copy of the exemption letter from the Missouri Sales Tax Bureau goes in with the title paperwork.8Missouri Department of Revenue. Form 4298A – Instructions for Sales Tax Exemption

Heavy Commercial Vehicles

Vehicles licensed at a gross weight of 24,000 pounds or more, along with trailers used by common carriers to transport people or property, are exempt.9Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 144.030 – Exemptions From Tax The carrier has to be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and operating for hire.10Missouri Department of Revenue. Sales Tax Exemption Statement for Authorized Common Carriers This is aimed at commercial freight and transit, not a personal pickup used occasionally for hauling.

A Note on Farm Vehicles

Farm tractors and off-highway utility vehicles used for agricultural purposes are exempt, but standard motor vehicles and trailers are specifically excluded from that exemption even when they’re used on a farm.9Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 144.030 – Exemptions From Tax A farmer buying a pickup truck pays the same tax as anyone else.

Private-Party Purchases

Buying from an individual doesn’t remove the tax; it just moves the paperwork onto you. You bring the signed title, a bill of sale showing the price, and your completed title application to a license office and pay the tax there. The rate and the calculation are identical to a dealer sale.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Buying a Vehicle

One thing to know: if the price on your bill of sale looks unreasonable, the Department of Revenue director can reject it and set the taxable value by appraisal.11Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 144.440 – Tax Payment Procedure for Motor Vehicles Reporting a $30,000 truck as a $500 sale is a well-worn move, and the state watches for it.

Out-of-State Purchases

Buying across state lines doesn’t get you out of Missouri tax. When you title the vehicle in Missouri, you owe tax at your home-address rate.11Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 144.440 – Tax Payment Procedure for Motor Vehicles If you already paid sales tax to the other state, you can request a refund or credit using Form 426.12Missouri Department of Revenue. Leased Vehicles

A leasing company can either pay the full sales tax upfront at titling, the way any buyer would, or register as a motor vehicle leasing company and collect tax on each lease payment.11Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 144.440 – Tax Payment Procedure for Motor Vehicles Most major companies use the per-payment approach, which means tax is already baked into your monthly bill and there’s no lump sum at signing. Ask your leasing company which method they use so nothing on the paperwork surprises you.

Titling, the 30-Day Deadline, and Penalties

The main form is the Application for Missouri Title and License, Form 108, which asks for the VIN, make, model, year, purchase price, any trade-in value, and applicable exemption codes. Your physical street address has to be correct, because that address sets your rate.13Missouri Department of Revenue. Application for Missouri Title and License – Form 108

Bring these along with Form 108:

  • The title, signed over by the seller, with the date of sale and the odometer reading filled in.
  • A bill of sale showing the purchase price and identifying both parties. The price on the bill of sale must match the price on Form 108.
  • Proof of Missouri liability insurance.
  • Trade-in documentation, if you traded a vehicle to an out-of-state dealer.

You have 30 days from the purchase date to title the vehicle and pay the tax. On day 31, a $25 late penalty is added. Another $25 stacks on for every additional 30 days you’re late, up to a $200 cap.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Buying a Vehicle The penalties are on top of the tax, not in place of it.

You can pay at any Department of Revenue license office by cash, personal check, cashier’s check, money order, or credit or debit card. Accepted cards are Discover, American Express, Visa, and MasterCard.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Buying a Vehicle You can also mail documents and payment to the central office. No certificate of title is issued until the tax is paid.11Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 144.440 – Tax Payment Procedure for Motor Vehicles

Financing the Tax

Dealer financing almost always rolls sales tax into the total loan. The lender finances the out-the-door price, which combines the vehicle, tax, and fees. It’s convenient, but you pay interest on the tax portion across the whole loan term. On a $3,000 tax bill financed at 4% over five years, the interest attributable to the tax alone runs roughly $315.

Private-party buyers usually can’t fold the tax into the sale itself, because a private seller isn’t set up to collect it. Some banks and credit unions will lend extra to cover taxes and fees, but that’s something you arrange separately before closing on the vehicle.

Missouri sales tax you pay on a vehicle can count toward the federal state and local tax deduction if you itemize, alongside property taxes and state income taxes. Whether it actually helps depends on whether your total SALT payments make itemizing worthwhile in the first place.
