The Missouri DMV test is actually three tests: a 25-question written knowledge exam, a vision and sign recognition screening, and a behind-the-wheel road skills test. The Missouri State Highway Patrol administers all three at its driver examination stations, and the Department of Revenue issues your license afterward at a separate license office.1Missouri Department of Revenue. Missouri Driver Guide You need 20 correct answers out of 25 on the written test, 20/40 vision in at least one eye, four of six signs identified correctly, and a passing score across seven road-test categories.
Who Takes Which Test and When
Everyone applying for a first Missouri license takes the same three exams. What changes with age is the sequence.
At 15, you can sit for the written test, vision screening, and sign recognition test to get an instruction permit. A parent or legal guardian has to come with you and sign a permission statement.2Missouri Department of Revenue. Graduated Driver License Law At 16, after holding the permit at least 182 days and logging 40 hours of supervised driving (10 of them at night) with no recent alcohol or traffic offenses, you take the road skills test for an intermediate license. At 18, you move to a full license with no additional testing if you already hold an intermediate license.3Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 302.130 – Temporary Instruction Permits
Adults 18 and older who have never held a Missouri permit start at the beginning and take all three exams in one push.

Vision and Sign Recognition
The vision screening requires 20/40 acuity in at least one eye, with or without corrective lenses, using a Snellen chart or equivalent device. There is also a peripheral vision check.7Missouri Revisor of Statutes. Missouri Code 302.175 – Vision Requirements If you need glasses or contacts to hit 20/40, expect a corrective-lens restriction on your license. You can also have your own optometrist or physician do the exam at your own expense and bring the results.
For sign recognition, the examiner shows you six highway signs and asks you to identify them by shape and color. Four out of six correct passes.8Legal Information Institute. - Starting and stopping smoothly, with good reaction time and vehicle control.
- Parallel parking into a space 25 feet long and 7 feet wide, ending within 18 inches of the curb and near the center of the space. You get two minutes.
- Backing in a straight line while looking over your right shoulder through the rear glass.
- Turns: at least two right and two left, with proper signaling, lane positioning, and speed.
- Hill parking with wheels turned the correct direction and the parking brake set.
- Intersections: yielding, obeying signals, stopping at the proper place.
- Noticing and obeying traffic signs and signals throughout the drive.
One thing to note: Missouri does not require a three-point turn. Some online guides say otherwise, but the official Driver Guide lists only the seven tasks above.
If You Fail
You can retake the written test after a fail, but the Highway Patrol limits road skills tests to one attempt per day and no more than three attempts within any 12-month period without special permission from the Department of Revenue.11Missouri State Highway Patrol.
