Hours and What to Expect When You Call
Phones are answered during standard Montana state government business hours: 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Mountain Time, Monday through Friday. An automated menu routes calls to licensing, complaints, or general inquiries. If you reach voicemail, leave a detailed message. Expect a callback within one to two business days, since staff usually need to pull your file before they can give a meaningful answer.
What to Have Ready Before You Call
Board staff field a high volume of calls, so a short list of details in front of you keeps the conversation quick.
If you already hold a Montana nursing license, have your license number ready. If you’ve applied but aren’t licensed yet, your full legal name and the date you submitted your application let staff find your file. For questions about a specific document, know the form title or the type of application you filed, whether endorsement, examination, or renewal. If you’re calling about a complaint, have the name or license number of the nurse involved.
Tasks You Can Handle Without Calling
Most routine business can be done online. The Board routes new applications and renewals through its portal at ebiz.mt.gov, where you can also pay fees.1Montana Board of Nursing. Montana Board of Nursing
To check whether a nurse holds an active Montana license, use the Licensee Lookup tool on the Professional and Occupational Licensing portal. It returns the license number and expiration date and is the fastest way to verify credentials.3Montana Department of Labor & Industry. Professional and Occupational Licensing Portal
For application status, the online portal or an email to dlibsdhelp@mt.gov will usually get you an answer sooner than the phone will. A complete application typically takes four to five weeks to process; missing documents or an uncleared background check will stretch that out.
Watch for Scam Calls
The Board has warned licensees about callers posing as Board of Nursing staff and claiming to be investigating the nurse’s license. These calls lean on urgency to pressure nurses into handing over personal information. The real Board will not cold-call demanding immediate action over the phone.1Montana Board of Nursing.
