MS Driver’s License Appointment: Booking, Documents, and Fees

To book a Mississippi driver’s license appointment, go to the Department of Public Safety’s scheduling portal at telegov.egov.com/dps, choose the Driver Service Bureau office closest to you, pick your transaction, and reserve an open date and time. Walk-in service may still exist at some locations, but DPS actively steers visitors to the online calendar, and showing up with a confirmation number is the fastest way through the door.

How to Book Online

The portal is linked from the main Driver Service Bureau site.1DPS Driver Service Bureau. DPS Driver Service Bureau It walks you through four steps. Select your nearest office. Pick the transaction type that matches what you need. Choose an open slot from the calendar. Enter your contact information. Once you confirm, the system generates a confirmation number and emails or texts you a receipt with your appointment details. Save it — you’ll be asked for it when you check in.

If plans change, the portal has a “Resend Confirmation” tool where you re-enter the email address you used to book. Your confirmation email also carries the instructions for modifying the booking. Arriving late or missing the slot usually means rebooking and waiting for the next opening, so treat the time as firm.

Transactions You Can Schedule

The appointment system covers nearly every in-person licensing transaction:

  • Original Class R license for passenger and light commercial vehicles
  • License renewal
  • Duplicate license to replace a lost, stolen, or damaged card
  • Out-of-state transfer
  • Learner’s permit
  • State-issued identification card for non-drivers
  • Commercial Driver’s License knowledge tests, renewals, duplicates, medical card updates, and out-of-state transfers

One carve-out: CDL road skills tests use a separate scheduling link that routes to the Driver Service Bureau’s road test page rather than the standard calendar.2Mississippi Department of Public Safety. Schedule Appointments Online – Appointment Wizard

Documents to Bring

Mississippi follows REAL ID standards, so document review is strict. For a first-time license or ID card, bring:

  • Proof of identity and date of birth: a certified birth certificate or valid U.S. passport
  • Your original Social Security card, not a photocopy
  • Two proofs of Mississippi residency — utility bills, bank statements, mortgage documents, or similar records showing your physical address, dated within the last 60 days

These three categories come straight from the DPS checklist.3Mississippi Department of Public Safety. If Your Name Has Changed

Bring the original legal document proving the change. The Driver Service Bureau accepts a marriage license, divorce decree, adoption order, or court order, and no other documents qualify.7DPS Driver Service Bureau. What Do I Need to Change My Name on My DL or ID?

If Your License Has Been Expired

Expired less than 12 months: you can renew online or in person without the full document package. Expired more than 60 months: you’ll need all original documents again — birth certificate, Social Security card, two proofs of residency — and you’ll have to retake the written knowledge exam.8DPS Driver Service Bureau. What Happens at the Appointment

Check in at the kiosk or present your confirmation to the front desk. Staff review your documents, verify identity, and process your DL-4. You’ll go through a vision screening; the standard is 20/40 acuity or better in both eyes, with or without corrective lenses. Vision between 20/50 and 20/70 may still qualify but with restrictions such as daylight-only driving or a speed limit.

Mississippi does not currently require a road skills test for a regular Class R license.4DPS Driver Service Bureau. Regular Driver License – Light Commercial Class D A written knowledge exam may still apply, especially for first-time applicants and anyone whose license has been expired for more than five years. CDL applicants have to pass both a knowledge test and a separate road skills exam.

When You Can Skip the Appointment

Not every renewal requires an office visit. If your Mississippi license has been expired for 12 months or less, you may be eligible to renew through the DPS Self-Service Portal. The limits:8DPS Driver Service Bureau. Renew Driver’s License and ID Card

  • You can only renew online every other cycle. If you renewed online last time, you have to come in this time.
  • Non-U.S. citizens must renew in person.
  • You can renew up to six months before your expiration date.
  • The standard $24 renewal fee applies, plus a convenience fee that varies by purchase amount and a $1.50 postage and handling charge.

Online renewal won’t help if you need to update your photo for REAL ID compliance or change information on your record. In those cases, book the appointment.

Booking for a Driver Under 18

Every applicant under 18 needs a valid school attendance form to obtain or renew a license. Parents booking appointments for teen drivers should keep that form with the standard identity and residency documents. A 14-year-old enrolled in a certified driver education program can get a learner’s permit restricted to the driver education vehicle; at 15, the applicant visits a Driver Service Bureau office to purchase a standard learner’s permit.14Justia Law. Military Members Returning to Mississippi

Active-duty military members who held a valid Mississippi license when it expired get extra flexibility. If you were out of state on military service, you can renew within 90 days of returning to Mississippi or being released from active duty without paying the late fee or retaking any exams, unless DPS has reason to believe you’re no longer eligible.8DPS Driver Service Bureau.
