MVA Maryland Registration Renewal: Methods, Costs, and Requirements

You can handle a Maryland vehicle registration renewal online, at an MVA self-service kiosk, by mail, or through a licensed tag and title service. The MVA mails a renewal notice about 60 days before your registration expires, and the online portal at mva.maryland.gov is the fastest route, processing payments around the clock and confirming on the spot.1MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration. How to Renew

Four options, same end result. The right one depends on how complicated your situation is.

Online

The MVA’s online portal is open 24 hours a day. You enter your plate and vehicle details, confirm the fees, pay by credit card, and get an on-screen receipt. Your new registration card and validation stickers ship by mail.1MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration. Renew Registration This is the method the MVA recommends and the one most people should use unless something on your record requires in-person help.

Self-Service Kiosk

Many MVA branch offices have touchscreen kiosks that work even when the office is closed.3MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration. Visit a Branch Office or Kiosk The kiosk takes payment and prints a receipt. Useful if you want to handle it in person outside business hours.

By Mail

The renewal notice the MVA sends you includes a form you can complete and return with a check or money order. Mail renewal takes longer because you’re waiting on two trips through the postal system. Give yourself a buffer if your expiration date is close.

Tag and Title Service

Private tag and title businesses are licensed by Maryland to submit registration transactions on your behalf. They charge a service fee on top of the state cost, and the markup varies. Worth it if you’re also clearing a flag or transferring a title; for a plain renewal, the online portal does the same job for free.

What It Costs

Maryland bases Class A passenger car fees on shipping weight, and every registration includes a $40 annual Emergency Medical Services surcharge. For a one-year renewal, the current annual fees are:4MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration. Fees and Payment Options

  • 3,500 lbs or less: $120.50
  • 3,501 to 3,700 lbs: $125.50
  • Over 3,700 lbs: $191.50

A two-year renewal is simply the annual amount doubled. The jump at the 3,700-pound line is sharp, so if your vehicle is close to the cutoff, check the shipping weight on your title rather than estimating.

Electric and Plug-In Hybrid Surcharges

Zero-emission vehicles pay an additional $125 per year, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles pay $100 per year on top of the standard registration fee.5Alternative Fuels Data Center. Electric Vehicle and Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle Registration Fee Maryland uses these to recover road-use revenue that gas-powered vehicles contribute through fuel taxes. The surcharge shows up as a separate line at checkout.

What Has to Be Clear Before You Can Renew

The MVA will reject a renewal, even with payment ready, if anything on your vehicle record is flagged. Three things trip people up most often.

Insurance

Your insurer electronically reports your coverage to the MVA, so you don’t need to upload a policy document. But any gap triggers an automated flag. Maryland law requires every registered vehicle to carry liability insurance for the entire registration period, and the MVA will not issue or transfer a registration without proof the coverage is in effect.6Maryland General Assembly. Maryland Code Transportation 17-104 – Evidence of Required Security If a lapse is on your record, the MVA assesses penalties based on how long the vehicle went uninsured, and an additional 17 percent collection fee applies if the penalty is referred to the Central Collections Unit.7MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration. Auto Insurance Violation Penalties and Payments You clear it by paying the penalty and showing coverage has been restored. Keep your insurer’s name and policy number handy during renewal in case the portal asks you to verify.

Emissions

Most Maryland vehicles must pass an inspection through the Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program before renewal.8MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration. Vehicle Emissions and Safety Inspections The MVA notifies you when yours is due. If the vehicle fails, you can retest after repairs or apply for a repair waiver if you’ve spent a qualifying amount trying to fix it.9MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration. Vehicle Emissions Inspection Missing the deadline makes the registration ineligible for renewal until the test is complete. If a check-engine light has been on, test early so you have time to deal with a failure.

Unpaid Tolls and Parking Citations

If you ignore a video toll notice and the follow-up civil citation, the Maryland Transportation Authority can tell the MVA to block or suspend your registration until the toll and civil penalty are paid.10Maryland General Assembly. Maryland Code Transportation 21-1414 – Video Toll Violations Local jurisdictions can place a similar hold for delinquent parking tickets, typically with a flag fee added on. Parking fines have to be paid directly to the jurisdiction that issued them, not to the MVA. A single forgotten E-ZPass misread is the classic version of this problem: the driver notices it months later when an online renewal gets rejected.

After You Pay

Once the renewal processes, your new registration card and validation stickers ship by mail to the address on file. The MVA offers a product-tracking tool for stickers sent within the past 90 days.11MDOT MVA. MVA Product Tracking If the tracker shows a problem, call the Customer Service Center to request replacements.

Your renewal is active in the MVA’s system as soon as it processes, so law enforcement can confirm it from your plate while the stickers are in transit. Once they arrive, put them on. Maryland law prohibits driving without current validation tabs displayed, and displaying expired tabs from any state is also illegal.12Maryland General Assembly. Maryland Code Transportation 13-411 – Display of Registration Plates and Validation Tabs

If you need to drive before the stickers arrive and your current tabs have already expired, the MVA can issue a temporary authorization certificate valid for up to 15 days.13Maryland General Assembly. Maryland Code Transportation 13-412 – Expiration of Registration and Temporary Authorization Certificates Without current tabs or that certificate, your registration expires at midnight on the date shown on the card, even if you’ve already paid.

Driving on Expired Tags

Maryland has no grace period. The moment your expiration date passes without a valid renewal or temporary certificate, driving the vehicle is illegal, and the MVA warns that it may result in fines.1MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration. Renew Registration The larger financial exposure is often an insurance violation on top of the citation if coverage lapsed at the same time, with penalties scaled to the number of uninsured days. Renew early to avoid both. You can renew before the expiration date, and the new period picks up where the old one ends.

Keep Your Address Current

Maryland law requires you to report an address change to the MVA within 30 days of moving.14MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration. Update Name, Address or Other Info on your Maryland Driver’s License Your renewal notice, registration card, and stickers all go to whatever address the MVA has on file. If you moved and didn’t update, the notice never reaches you and the stickers go to your old address. You can update your address through the MVA portal before you start the renewal.
