The West Virginia Tax Division’s online portal at mytaxes.wvtax.gov lets you file state tax returns, make payments, schedule estimated taxes, and review your account history in one place. It handles individual income tax, sales and use tax, employer withholding, and other state tax types, and it works for anyone from a single filer to a large business. Businesses that paid $50,000 or more in state taxes in the most recent fiscal year may be required to use it; everyone else can use it by choice.
Setting Up Your Account
Go to mytaxes.wvtax.gov and create a User ID and password. Make sure JavaScript is enabled in your browser first, or the pages won’t load correctly.
Once your login exists, link your state tax accounts to it. What you need depends on who you are:
- Individuals: your Social Security Number and a figure from a prior-year personal income tax return, such as a recent filing amount.
- Businesses: your Federal EIN and your West Virginia Business Registration Number. The system may also ask for a recent payment amount to verify you own the account.
After linking, your dashboard shows historical filings, current balances, and payment records.
Filing a Return
Select the tax type and period, enter your figures, and review the return the system generates. Submitting requires an electronic signature, which has the same legal weight as a handwritten one. You’ll receive a confirmation number with the date and time. Save it. You’ll need it if you contact the Tax Division about that return or file an amendment.
To amend a return you already filed, open the original tax period in the portal and mark the new submission as an amendment.
Paying What You Owe
The portal accepts payments on filed returns, estimated taxes, and extension payments. Two methods are available.
ACH Debit (E-Check)
You authorize the Tax Division to pull funds from your checking or savings account. No fee. Funds are generally withdrawn the day after the settlement date, and you can schedule a future date if you’re paying ahead.1West Virginia State Tax Department. Credit or Debit Card
All major cards are accepted through the State Treasurer’s Office. The convenience fee is 2.5% of the payment, with a $1.00 minimum.2West Virginia Tax Division. Credit Card Payments On a $2,000 balance that’s an extra $50, so ACH saves real money on larger payments.
Bounced Payments
Any electronic payment that fails carries a $15 returned-transaction fee, whether the cause is insufficient funds, a closed account, or a card problem. The fee applies to ACH debits, ACH credits, and card payments.3West Virginia Tax Division. Payment Options for Individuals
Scheduling Quarterly Estimates
If you pay estimated taxes, you can schedule all four quarterly payments in advance. That keeps you from missing a due date and triggering underpayment penalties. 2026 Deadlines and What Happens If You’re Late
For tax year 2025, personal income tax returns are due April 15, 2026. The filing season opened January 26, 2026.4West Virginia Tax Division. West Virginia Tax Division If you need more time, file Form WV-4868 through the portal for a six-month extension to October 15, 2026.5West Virginia Tax Division. West Virginia Income Tax Filing Season
Read this part carefully: the extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. Any tax owed is still due April 15, and penalties and interest start accruing after that date on unpaid amounts.6West Virginia Tax Division. WV-4868 Application for Extension of Time to File
If you miss the filing deadline without reasonable cause, the failure-to-file penalty is 5% of the net tax due per month or partial month late, capped at 25%. If you file but don’t pay, the failure-to-pay penalty is 0.5% of the unpaid tax per month, also capped at 25%. When both apply in the same month, the combined rate is 5% rather than 5.5%.7West Virginia Legislature. West Virginia Code 11-10-18 – Additions to Tax
Interest runs on top. For January 1 through December 31, 2026, the underpayment rate is 11.50%.8West Virginia State Tax Department. Administrative Notice 2025-14 Carrying a balance gets expensive quickly, so even if you’re extending your filing, pay as much as you can by April 15 to stop the payment-penalty and interest clocks.
Checking Your Refund
The “Where’s My Refund?” tool sits on the main tax.wv.gov homepage.4West Virginia Tax Division. Returns filed electronically through MyTaxes generally process faster than paper returns.
Business Filers
If your business paid $50,000 or more in total state taxes during the most recent fiscal year, you may be required to file and pay through MyTaxes rather than by paper.9West Virginia Tax Division. Electronic Filing for Businesses

The registration fee is $30, though some entities are exempt.10West Virginia Tax Division. Business Registration Frequently Asked Questions The certificate is permanent, with no annual renewal.
