Natchitoches Parish Sales Tax Rates and Exemptions

The Natchitoches Parish sales tax combines Louisiana’s 5% state rate with a local rate that depends on exactly where the sale happens, producing totals between 9% and 12.5% at the register.1Louisiana Department of Revenue. What Is the State Sales Tax Rate? More than a dozen local jurisdictions sit inside the parish, so the rate on Front Street in the city is not the rate at a store a few miles out, and a shop at one end of a block may fall into a different district than a shop at the other end.

What Rate Applies Where

Louisiana’s state sales tax rose from 4.45% to 5% on January 1, 2025, and that rate is scheduled to hold through at least December 31, 2029.1Louisiana Department of Revenue. What Is the State Sales Tax Rate? Local rates stack on top of it:

  • Unincorporated parish: 4% local, 9% combined
  • City of Natchitoches: 5.5% local, 10.5% combined
  • Clarence, Natchez, Robeline, and Goldonna: 10% combined
  • Campti: 10.5% combined

Economic Development Districts

Several economic development districts (EDDs) layer an additional 1% to 2% onto sales inside their boundaries. Inside the City of Natchitoches, the Downtown EDD, the I-49 EDD, and others push the combined rate to 11.5%. The Mill Street EDD carries the parish’s highest rate at 12.5%. Outside the city, four parish-level EDDs (EDD-I through EDD-IV) sit at a 10% combined rate.2Louisiana Association of Tax Administrators. Natchitoches Parish

For a seller, the practical point is that the exact street address controls the rate. Charging the wrong one creates liability either way: undercollection leaves you owing the difference, overcollection leaves the customer owed a refund.

What’s Taxable and What’s Exempt

The tax applies to the sale, lease, or rental of tangible personal property, meaning most physical goods. It also covers specific services defined under Louisiana law: hotel and short-term lodging, parking, printing, laundry and dry cleaning, cold storage, and repairs to movable property.3Justia. Louisiana Code RS 47-338.172 – Natchitoches Parish Sales Taxes Authorized

Use tax covers the other direction. When you buy something taxable from an out-of-state seller that didn’t collect Louisiana tax and bring it into the parish, you owe use tax at the same combined rate that applies at your location. Large equipment, online orders from retailers without Louisiana nexus, and business supply purchases are the usual trigger points.

Several exemptions matter at the register:

  • Groceries sold for home preparation and consumption are exempt from the state’s 5%, including bakery items, fresh produce, and packaged foods needing further preparation. Prepared meals and restaurant food stay fully taxable. Whether local parish tax applies to groceries depends on the local ordinance, so confirm the current treatment with the Natchitoches Parish Tax Commission.4Louisiana Department of Revenue. • Residential utilities, including electricity, natural gas, and water, are fully exempt from both state and local sales tax.5Louisiana Department of Revenue. Are Residential Utilities Subject to Sales and Use Tax?
  • Machinery and equipment used as an integral part of manufacturing tangible personal property for sale qualify for exemption, along with pollution control equipment, testing and measuring instruments used in production, and power generation for on-site industrial use. Buildings, structural components, and HVAC generally do not qualify unless directly necessary to the manufacturing process.6Louisiana State Legislature. Who Collects It and How to Register

The Natchitoches Parish Tax Commission is the single collection point for local sales and use taxes across seven governing jurisdictions in the parish. Vendors file one return and send one payment, and the commission distributes the money by local ordinance.7Natchitoches Parish Tax Commission. Natchitoches Parish Tax Commission

Before you make taxable sales in the parish, register with the commission and get a local account number. Registration runs through the commission’s office or through two online portals, Parish E-File and SalesTaxOnline.7Natchitoches Parish Tax Commission. Natchitoches Parish Tax Commission You’ll be asked for your FEIN (or Social Security number for a sole proprietor), your Louisiana Secretary of State registration details, the business’s physical location, contact information for owners or officers, your entity type, the date you started or plan to start, and a description of what you sell. That description helps the commission set your filing frequency.

Deadlines and Late Penalties

Returns and full payment are due by the 20th of the month following each taxable period. A mailed paper return needs an official postmark dated on or before the 20th to count as timely. Electronic filing goes through Parish E-File or SalesTaxOnline, with payment by ACH or credit card; paper returns and a check or money order go to the commission’s office.8Louisiana Association of Tax Administrators. Late filing is expensive. The delinquent penalty is 5% of the tax owed for every 30-day period, or any fraction of one, that the return is late, capped at 25%. Interest runs separately at 1% per month from the original due date until paid.8Louisiana Association of Tax Administrators. After electronic submission, the system generates a confirmation number worth saving as proof of filing.

Selling Into the Parish From Out of State

If you sell into Louisiana from outside the state, economic nexus rules can pull you into the parish’s tax collection. A remote seller whose gross revenue from sales delivered into Louisiana exceeds $100,000 in the current or previous calendar year must register and collect both state and local sales tax going forward.9Justia. Louisiana Revised Statutes 47-340.1 – Marketplace Facilitators; Collection and Remittance of State and Local Sales and Use Tax

Marketplace facilitators like Amazon, Etsy, and Walmart Marketplace carry the same obligation at the platform level. When a facilitator’s total Louisiana sales cross $100,000, the facilitator collects and remits on behalf of its third-party sellers and must submit a registration application within 30 days.10Louisiana State Legislature. Marketplace Facilitators; Collection and Remittance of State and Local Sales and Use Tax If a facilitator is already collecting on your sales, those transactions generally don’t count toward your own $100,000 threshold.
