The North Carolina bar exam is the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE), administered twice a year in February and July by the North Carolina Board of Law Examiners (NCBLE). You need a scaled score of 270 out of 400 to pass, along with a passing MPRE score and a clean character and fitness review. This holds through the February 2028 sitting; beginning in July 2028, North Carolina will move to the NextGen bar exam.
Who Can Sit for the Exam
Most applicants qualify by earning a J.D. from an ABA-approved law school. North Carolina also allows graduates of non-ABA law schools located outside the state to sit for the exam, but only if they already hold bar admission in another jurisdiction.1National Conference of Bar Examiners. Separately, you must pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination (MPRE) with a scaled score of at least 80.2North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. Information for Bar Exam Application The MPRE is a separate ethics test given by the NCBE. You can take it before or after the bar exam itself, but you will not be admitted until the NCBLE has a passing score on file.
The board also runs a detailed character and fitness investigation. Expect to disclose criminal history down to minor traffic offenses, school discipline, prior lawsuits, and financial issues such as bankruptcy. Investigators verify the details independently. Applicants with things to disclose are not automatically disqualified. Applicants who leave things out or shade the truth run into real trouble.
Application, Deadlines, and Fees
You apply through the NCBLE’s online portal, where you create an account and complete the Character and Fitness questionnaire.3North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. North Carolina Board of Law Examiners Home The questionnaire asks for every residence, every job, and any legal or disciplinary issue since you turned 18, along with contact information for former employers and supervisors.
Some pieces still move on paper. You mail signed and notarized signature pages and completed fingerprint cards to the board, and your law school sends transcripts or degree verification directly.
For 2026, a non-licensed applicant pays $850 to file on time or $1,100 to file late. For the July 2026 exam, the timely window runs November 10, 2025 through January 6, 2026, and the late window closes March 3, 2026.4North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. What the Exam Looks Like
The exam runs two days and has three separately scored parts. The Multistate Bar Examination (MBE) is worth 50% of your score, the Multistate Essay Examination (MEE) is worth 30%, and the Multistate Performance Test (MPT) is worth 20%.5National Conference of Bar Examiners. The MBE
The MBE is a six-hour, 200-question multiple-choice test split across a three-hour morning session and a three-hour afternoon session. It covers civil procedure, constitutional law, contracts, criminal law and procedure, evidence, real property, and torts. Because it carries the most weight, a strong MBE can carry a weaker written performance.
The MEE
The MEE is six 30-minute essay questions. The subjects overlap with the MBE and add areas like family law, trusts and estates, business associations, and conflict of laws. Each question gives you a fact pattern and asks you to spot issues, apply the rules, and reach a supported conclusion. Graders reward organized analysis over any single “right” answer.
The MPT
The MPT is two 90-minute lawyering tasks. You get a case file and a closed library of statutes, cases, and regulations, then produce something like a memo, a brief, or a client letter. You are not expected to bring outside legal knowledge; the test measures whether you can sort unfamiliar materials and write competent legal work under time pressure.
Laptop Testing
If you want to type your essay and MPT answers, the NCBLE runs a laptop testing program through ExamSoft. The fee is $125, non-refundable and non-transferable.7North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. You must download and install a fresh copy of the Examplify software on the laptop you will bring, even if a prior version is already on the machine, because parameters change from one administration to the next. Check the minimum system requirements before test day. If the software fails during the exam, you handwrite your answers and the fee is gone.
Testing Accommodations
Applicants with disabilities can request accommodations such as extended time, a separate room, or assistive technology. Requests must be filed on NCBLE forms by the first Tuesday in December for the February exam and the first Tuesday in May for the July exam.8North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. You will need a current evaluation from a licensed professional qualified to diagnose the condition, describing the diagnosis, your current level of impairment, and why the specific accommodations you want are necessary for this exam.8North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. Special Testing Accommodations Policy The board may also ask for records of accommodations you received in law school, in college, or under an IEP or Section 504 plan. Prior accommodations in similar testing settings carry weight, but none is automatically carried forward.
Passing Score and Results
The passing score is 270 out of 400.9North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. Understanding Your Examination Score Your total is built from scaled MBE, MEE, and MPT results at their respective weights. Scaling accounts for difficulty differences between administrations, so a 270 reflects the same competency whichever sitting you took.
Scores are posted to your secure portal roughly five weeks after the exam.10North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. Grading and Results February 2026 results, for reference, went up in early April. Retaking the Exam
North Carolina puts no cap on retakes. Each attempt requires a fresh application and the full fee. With overall pass rates recently around 69%, a meaningful share of candidates sit more than once. On a retake, you already know the format, which is an edge. Direct your study at the component where your scaled score was weakest instead of splitting time evenly.
Transferring a UBE Score In
Because the exam is the UBE, a passing score from another UBE jurisdiction can be used to apply for admission in North Carolina, and a North Carolina score can be transferred out. The state accepts transferred UBE scores up to three years old.11National Conference of Bar Examiners. Fees are higher for transfer applicants: $1,275 for someone not yet licensed anywhere, and $1,500 for someone already licensed in another jurisdiction.4North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. Comity for Already-Licensed Attorneys
If you are already licensed and actively practicing in another state, you may be able to skip the bar exam entirely through comity. You must show at least four years of active, substantial law practice within the past six years in a reciprocal jurisdiction, and that practice must have been your principal means of livelihood.12North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. The comity fee is $2,000, and the paperwork is extensive: certificates of good standing from every jurisdiction where you hold a license, transcripts from every school attended, driving records from every state where you have held a license, fingerprint cards, and certificates of moral character from four references.12North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. After You Pass
Once the NCBLE certifies your score and clears your character review, you receive swearing-in instructions. Ceremonies are typically held at local Superior Court proceedings, where new attorneys take the oath. After that, you are a member of the North Carolina State Bar and can practice.
You are not quite done. New attorneys must complete a 12-hour Professionalism for New Attorneys (PNA) program approved by the State Bar, covering ethics, professional responsibility, trust account management, substance abuse awareness, and technology. Attorneys who were admitted and actively practiced in another jurisdiction for five or more years before joining the North Carolina bar are exempt. The PNA hours count toward your first two-year CLE compliance period, so finishing early puts you ahead on CLE.
The 2028 Switch to NextGen
North Carolina will keep the current UBE through the February 2028 sitting. Starting in July 2028, the state moves to the NextGen bar exam, a redesigned version of the UBE from the NCBE.13National Conference of Bar Examiners.
