NC Driving Permit Test: Eligibility, What to Bring, and Coverage

The North Carolina driving permit test is a 25-question, computer-based exam on road signs and traffic laws given at any NCDMV driver license office. You need to answer at least 20 questions correctly, an 80% score, to pass. The fee is $25.50, and if you pass you leave with a temporary paper permit the same day.1North Carolina General Assembly. Who Can Take the Test

Eligibility depends on your age. If you’re between 15 and 17, you must first complete a state-approved driver education course before you can apply for a Level 1 Limited Learner Permit.2North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 20-11 – Issuance of Limited Learners Permit and Provisional Drivers License Adults 18 and older skip the driver education requirement and apply directly, though they sit for the same knowledge test.

Every applicant must be a North Carolina resident and produce at least two forms of identification approved by the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles, with at least one showing a residential address.1North Carolina General Assembly. What to Bring

Gather your paperwork before you leave the house. You’ll need:

  • One document showing your full legal name and date of birth, such as a birth certificate or valid passport.
  • Your Social Security card or another document verifying the number. The DMV will not issue a permit without it.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 20-7 – Issuance and Renewal of Drivers Licenses
  • Two separate documents showing your current North Carolina address, such as a utility bill, bank statement, or lease agreement.
  • If you’re under 18 and still in school, a Driving Eligibility Certificate signed by a parent and a school official. If you’ve already graduated, bring your high school diploma instead. The certificate expires 30 days from the date it’s issued, so don’t get it too early.2North Carolina General Assembly. One boundary worth clearing up: you do not need proof of liability insurance for a learner permit. That verification only kicks in when you advance to a provisional or full license.3North Carolina Department of Transportation. New Drivers

What the Test Covers

The exam mixes two kinds of questions. Some ask you to identify road signs by shape, color, and meaning. You might see an octagon and need to recognize it as a stop sign without any text, or read a yellow diamond and identify what it warns about. The rest cover rules of the road: right-of-way at intersections, how to respond when an emergency vehicle approaches, safe following distances, and proper use of turn signals.

Every question comes from the official N.C. Driver’s Handbook, which is free at any DMV office and downloadable from the NCDMV website.4North Carolina Department of Transportation. Driver Manuals Read it cover to cover instead of relying on random online practice quizzes. Give extra time to the sign identification pages and the chapters on right-of-way and speed limits. Those are where people slip.

Test Day at the DMV

You don’t need an appointment. NCDMV offices take walk-ins, though you can reserve a time up to seven days in advance through the state’s SkipTheLine system to cut your wait.5North Carolina Department of Transportation. NCDMV Helpful Hints

When you check in, an agent reviews your documents and enters your information into the system. Before the knowledge test, you take a vision screening. Your visual acuity must be 20/40 or better in at least one eye. If you meet that only with glasses or contacts, your permit will carry a corrective lens restriction.6North Carolina Department of Transportation. 19A NCAC 03B .0201 – Drivers License Examination

Then you sit at a computer kiosk for the 25 questions. The system scores your answers in real time and tells you immediately whether you passed. If you did, you pay the $25.50 fee, get your photo taken, and walk out with a temporary paper permit.1North Carolina General Assembly. If You Don’t Pass

Missing more than five questions means you fail. You won’t pay the fee or get your photo. You must wait seven calendar days before retaking the test.7North Carolina Department of Transportation. Driver License Tests Use the week to go back through the handbook sections that gave you trouble rather than simply trying again and hoping for easier questions. There’s no penalty for multiple attempts beyond the wait.

What Your Permit Lets You Do

Passing the test gets you a Level 1 Limited Learner Permit, not a regular license. It comes with strict rules:

These aren’t suggestions. Law enforcement stops permit holders who break them, and a moving violation conviction can delay your progression to the next license level.
