Nebraska Change of Address: License, Registration, and Fees

A Nebraska DMV change of address must be filed within 60 days of your move. Your driver’s license or state ID gets updated one way, either online or at a driver licensing office, and your vehicle registration gets updated a different way, at your county treasurer’s office. Both deadlines run from the same 60-day clock under Nebraska Revised Statute 60-4,120, and missing either can lead to expired-document violations with real teeth.

Updating Your Driver’s License or State ID

You have two channels: online through the DMV, or in person at a driver licensing office. There is no mail-in option.

The online route is available if you hold a standard Class O (car) license, a Class M (motorcycle) license, or a state ID card. You also need to have kept the same name since your last license was issued and to have received no more than two replacement documents in the past five years.1Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Some credentials cannot be updated online at all. Learner’s permits, school permits, provisional permits, commercial driver’s licenses, and commercial permits all require an in-person visit.1Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Updating Your Vehicle Registration

Your vehicle registration is a separate transaction handled at your local county treasurer’s office. The DMV’s central office and its online portal do not process registration address changes.3Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Proof of Address You’ll Need to Bring

The DMV asks for two documents showing your new residential address, whether the address is being verified for the first time or you are simply moving.1Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Change of Address – Driver’s License, Permit and State ID Cards Acceptable documents include:

  • A bank or financial institution statement dated within the last 90 days
  • A pay stub or earnings statement dated within the last 90 days
  • Federal, state, or local government correspondence dated within the last 90 days
  • A valid Nebraska vehicle registration
  • A mortgage agreement, lease, or rental agreement (leases must include the landlord’s name and contact information)
  • A valid life, health, auto, or home insurance policy or card
  • A Nebraska voter registration card
  • Any postmarked envelope or correspondence dated within the last 90 days

Applicants under 21 may use a parent’s or guardian’s proof of address.4Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Document Verification Form

Fees

A change of address produces a replacement document, and the replacement carries a fee. For a driver’s license or state ID handled online, the DMV charges a $5.00 security fee plus a vendor processing fee for the online service.5Nebraska.gov. Drivers License and State ID Card Services

A replacement vehicle registration showing the new address has a base fee of $1.00. Mandatory surcharges push the total to roughly $5.00 to $6.50 depending on the county.6Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Registration Fees and Taxes

Moving to Nebraska From Another State

New residents work on a tighter clock. If you hold a valid license from another state, you must get a Nebraska driver’s license within 30 days of establishing residency.7Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. New Nebraska Resident Drivers Licensing

Any motor vehicle brought into the state from another jurisdiction has to be titled in Nebraska. Bring the following to your county treasurer’s office:

  • Your certificate of title from the previous state, or the manufacturer’s statement of origin for a new vehicle
  • A completed application for certificate of title
  • A sheriff’s inspection of the vehicle
  • A $10 title fee

If ownership is transferring at the same time, the seller must supply a bill of sale or a completed Nebraska Department of Revenue Form 6 for sales and use tax.8Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Out-of-State Titles

Situations That Change the Rules

Active-duty military. A Nebraska driver’s license that was valid on or after August 27, 1971 remains valid for the full time you are on active duty outside the state and for 60 days after discharge or return. The exemption also covers family members of active-duty personnel. You can request Form 07-08 from the DMV, a small card that attaches to your license as proof of the exemption. Holders of a “limited term” driver’s license do not qualify.9Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Military Exemption Process

Domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking survivors. Nebraska’s Address Confidentiality Program, run by the Secretary of State, gives qualifying residents a substitute address to use with state and local agencies, including the DMV. To qualify, you must be a Nebraska resident who has recently moved, or plans to move, to a location unknown to the abuser.10Nebraska Secretary of State. Address Confidentiality Program

College students. A student temporarily living in another state for school can generally keep a Nebraska address if the intent is to return after finishing. State residency rules recognize that a temporary move for education does not by itself end resident status.11Nebraska Legislature. What Happens if You Miss the 60 Days

The direct penalty matters, and the indirect penalty often matters more. Failing to apply for a replacement license within 60 days of an address change is a violation of the Motor Vehicle Operator’s License Act. Because no specific penalty is attached to this provision, it defaults to a Class III misdemeanor.12Nebraska Legislature. Nebraska Revised Statute 60-4111 – Violation General Penalty Provisions A Class III misdemeanor carries up to three months in jail, a fine of up to $500, or both.13Nebraska Legislature. Nebraska Code 28-106 – Misdemeanors Classification of Penalties Sentences Where Served

The more common problem is renewal notices going to the old address. Drive on an expired license or registration long enough and you’ll pick up traffic infractions that feed Nebraska’s point system. Violations carry point values from 1 to 12, and 12 or more points inside any two-year period results in a six-month license revocation and a required driver improvement course of at least four hours.14Justia Law. Nebraska Revised Statute 60-4-183 – Point System Revocation of License When Revocation is not the same as suspension; getting the license back typically requires a full reinstatement.

An outdated address can also complicate your auto insurance. Carriers use your address to price the policy, and a mismatch between your policy and your DMV record can slow or complicate a claim. If a lapse in mail leads to a lapse in coverage, driving without insurance is a Class II misdemeanor. If you’re cited but had coverage at the time, you have ten days to show the prosecutor or county attorney proof of insurance, and the citation is dismissed if you can prove it.15Nebraska Legislature.
