Nebraska Concealed Carry Renewal: Steps, Timing & Eligibility

To handle a Nebraska concealed carry renewal, submit your application to the Nebraska State Patrol during the window that opens four months before your permit’s expiration date and closes 30 business days after it. The renewal fee is $50, and if you file on time you don’t have to retake the handgun safety course.¹ Nebraska permits are valid for five years.

When to Apply

Your renewal window opens four months before the expiration date printed on your permit and closes 30 business days after it. Because the post-expiration grace period is measured in business days rather than calendar days, weekends and holidays don’t count against you, and the window works out to roughly six calendar weeks.¹

The State Patrol is required to send you a notice at least four months before expiration, by mail or electronically.¹ Don’t count on it. If the notice goes to an old address, the expiration date doesn’t move with it.

How to Renew Online

The fastest route is the Nebraska State Patrol’s concealed handgun permit portal. Logging in requires your current permit number, date of birth, driver’s license or state ID number, last name, and zip code.² The system walks you through the same kind of background questions about criminal history and mental health that you answered on your original application. Answer them honestly. False information on the application is itself a criminal offense.

The $50 fee is payable by credit card, debit card, or e-check through the portal.³ Card payments carry a small convenience fee on top of the $50 to cover processor charges.

How to Renew in Person

You can also renew at a Nebraska State Patrol troop headquarters. In person, you can pay by cash, check, money order, or card.³ Bring your current permit and a valid Nebraska driver’s license or state ID. Naturalized citizens should also bring documentation verifying legal status.

Processing Time

State law gives the Nebraska State Patrol up to 45 days to issue an initial permit.⁴ Renewals don’t carry that same statutory deadline; the Patrol processes them in the order received.⁵ Filing early in your four-month window is the best way to build in cushion. Your new permit card is mailed to the address on file after approval.

Eligibility Is Rechecked

Renewal isn’t a rubber stamp. The State Patrol verifies that you still meet every qualification from your original application, and runs your information through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System to catch any new prohibitions.⁶ You still need to:

Be at least 21 years old.
Be a Nebraska resident for at least 180 days. Military members on permanent duty orders in Nebraska and their spouses qualify as residents.
Meet the vision standard for a Class O driver’s license. A current Nebraska license lets the Patrol verify this from existing records; without one, you’ll need a signed statement from an optometrist or ophthalmologist.
Have no felony convictions in any jurisdiction.
Have no misdemeanor crimes of violence within the past ten years.
Have no firearms, weapons, or controlled substance convictions within the past ten years.
Have no mental health adjudications finding you mentally ill and dangerous or mentally incompetent within the past ten years.
Not be a federally prohibited person under 18 U.S.C. § 922(g).

One requirement you don’t have to repeat for a timely renewal: the handgun safety training course. The training you completed for your initial application still counts as long as you renew before the window closes.⁵

If You Miss the Renewal Window

Between your expiration date and 30 business days after it, the renewal path is unchanged: same $50 fee, same process, no new training required.¹

Once those 30 business days pass, renewal is no longer an option. You have to start over as a new applicant. That means retaking a certified handgun safety course, being fingerprinted again, and paying the $100 initial application fee instead of the $50 renewal fee.⁵⁴ Add the course fee and the longer processing time for a fresh application, and letting the grace period lapse becomes an expensive mistake.

An expired permit no longer means you can’t carry inside Nebraska. Under the state’s constitutional carry law, any person 21 or older who isn’t a prohibited person can carry concealed statewide without any permit.⁷ What you lose when the permit expires are the benefits that made it worth keeping in the first place.

Why Renewing Still Matters

Constitutional carry only covers you inside Nebraska. Other states have no obligation to honor it, and the Nebraska State Patrol specifically cautions permit holders against assuming otherwise.⁵ In states that recognize the Nebraska permit, the permit is what makes your carry legal there. Without a valid one, you’re on the hook for each state’s own rules, and many require a permit from your home state.

The second benefit is at the gun counter. A valid Nebraska concealed handgun permit qualifies as an alternative to the federal NICS point-of-sale background check under the Brady Law.⁸ A licensed dealer can transfer a firearm to you without running a separate NICS check, which saves time during periods when NICS delays are common. Both benefits disappear the moment your permit lapses.
