Nebraska Quarterly Tax Payments: Due Dates, Safe Harbor, and Penalties

Nebraska quarterly estimated tax payments are due April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 for calendar-year taxpayers, and you owe them if your Nebraska income tax after withholding and credits will reach $500 for an individual or $400 for a corporation. Miss an installment and the state charges an 8% annual underpayment penalty for the 2025–2026 period, calculated separately for each quarter you came up short.1Nebraska Department of Revenue. Who Owes Estimated Payments

Nebraska Revised Statute 77-2769 requires every resident and nonresident individual, corporation, and entity taxed as a corporation to pay estimated tax during the year.2Nebraska Legislature. Nebraska Code 77-2769 – Income Tax; Estimated Tax; Payment; Date The dollar triggers:

Self-employment income is the obvious case, but the same rule catches significant rental income, investment gains, and retirement distributions that aren’t fully covered by withholding. Partners and S corporation shareholders whose entity has not made the entity-level tax election pay estimated tax on their share of the business income personally, since Nebraska taxes that income at the individual level.4Nebraska Legislature. 2026 Due Dates

For calendar-year taxpayers, the four installment deadlines are:6Nebraska Department of Revenue. Instructions for Paying Your Estimated Individual Income Tax

  • 1st installment: April 15, 2026
  • 2nd installment: June 15, 2026
  • 3rd installment: September 15, 2026
  • 4th installment: January 15, 2027

Nothing stops you from paying the whole year’s estimated tax with the April voucher instead of splitting it four ways. When a due date lands on a weekend or legal holiday, the next business day counts as timely.6Nebraska Department of Revenue. Instructions for Paying Your Estimated Individual Income Tax

Figuring the Amount

Form 1040N-ES carries a worksheet that walks through the estimate: project your Nebraska adjusted gross income for the year, subtract deductions and credits, then apply the current rates.7Nebraska Department of Revenue. Nebraska Revised Statute 77-2715.03 – Individual Income Tax Brackets and Rates Bracket thresholds are adjusted annually for inflation, so pull the 2026 schedule from the current Form 1040N-ES instructions rather than reusing last year’s numbers.

Safe Harbor

You avoid the underpayment penalty if your payments meet either of these tests:

  • Prior-year method: at least 100% of the tax shown on last year’s Nebraska return, provided that return covered a full 12 months.
  • Current-year method: at least 90% of what you’ll actually owe for 2026.

Nebraska uses whichever number is smaller as your required payment, so you get the benefit of the lower one. If your federal AGI exceeds $150,000 ($75,000 if married filing separately), the prior-year method uses the applicable federal percentage rather than a flat 100%.5Nebraska Department of Revenue. Uneven Income

If your income arrives lumpy across the year (seasonal business, a big summer closing, a one-time capital gain), the annualized income installment method on Form 2210N lets you size each installment to what you actually earned by that point in the year.9Nebraska Department of Revenue. Individual Underpayment of Estimated Tax It doesn’t reduce your total tax, but it can wipe out penalties on the early quarters when the income hadn’t come in yet.

Farmers, Ranchers, and Fishers

If two-thirds or more of your gross income comes from farming, ranching, or fishing, you can skip the four-quarter schedule and make a single estimated payment by January 15 after the tax year. File your Nebraska return and pay the full balance by March 1 and you can skip estimated payments entirely, and no underpayment penalty applies.10Nebraska Department of Revenue. How to Pay

Nebraska accepts estimated payments several ways:7Nebraska Department of Revenue. Nebraska Individual Estimated Income Tax Payment Vouchers

  • Nebraska e-pay: the Department of Revenue’s web system lets you schedule bank withdrawals up to a year in advance, with an email confirmation for each one.11Nebraska Department of Revenue. Nebraska e-pay
  • Electronic Funds Withdrawal at e-file: authorize a direct debit on a date you choose when you file your return.
  • Credit card through ACI Payments, Inc. at acipayonline.com or 800-272-9829. American Express, Discover, MasterCard, and Visa are accepted; the vendor charges a convenience fee.
  • Check or money order payable to “Nebraska Department of Revenue,” mailed with the Form 1040N-ES voucher to PO Box 98911, Lincoln, NE 68509-8911.

Individuals put their Social Security number (and their spouse’s, on joint payments) on the voucher so the payment lands in the right account. Corporations use Form 1120N-ES and their federal employer identification number.3Nebraska Department of Revenue. 2026 Nebraska Corporation Estimated Income Tax Payment

What the Penalty Costs and When It’s Waived

The underpayment penalty runs at 8% per year for 2025–2026.1Nebraska Department of Revenue. Revenue Ruling 99-24-1 – Interest Rate Assessed on State Taxes It’s computed installment by installment. Paying double in September doesn’t erase a June shortfall; the June penalty runs from the June due date until that quarter’s underpayment is covered.9Nebraska Department of Revenue. No penalty applies if:9Nebraska Department of Revenue. Individual Underpayment of Estimated Tax

  • Your total Nebraska tax after withholding and credits is under $500.
  • You had zero Nebraska income tax liability the prior year, were a U.S. citizen or resident the entire year, and that prior return covered 12 months.
  • You qualify as a farmer, rancher, or fisher and file and pay in full by March 1.

Form 2210N calculates the exact amount if you do owe. Skip the form and the Department will compute it and send a notice.

Overpayments

If your payments exceed your tax, take a refund or apply the overpayment to next year’s estimated tax. Once it’s credited toward a future voucher period, getting the money back requires a written request to the Department of Revenue and an amended estimated tax calculation.5Nebraska Department of Revenue. Chapter 20 – Estimated Income Tax If there’s any chance you’ll want the cash, take the refund.

Extensions Don’t Move Estimated Deadlines

A Nebraska filing extension (up to seven months, or automatic when the IRS grants a federal extension) also extends the time to pay any balance shown on the return.12Nebraska Legislature. Nebraska Revised Statute 77-2770 It does not push back the quarterly estimated tax dates. April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15 stand regardless of any extension you’ve been granted for filing the return itself.
