Nebraska Trailer Registration Requirements and Fees

Nebraska trailer registration happens at your county treasurer’s office within 30 days of buying the trailer, and for most trailers the registration fee itself is only a dollar or a few dollars.1Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Vehicle Registration The real money is elsewhere: sales tax on the purchase price at registration, and a small annual motor vehicle tax that scales with the trailer’s age. You register in the county where the trailer is kept most of the time, and a Nebraska title must already be in your name unless the trailer is exempt from titling.

What to Bring and How Registration Works

For a first-time registration, the county treasurer needs three things: a Nebraska title issued in your name, proof that sales or excise tax has been paid on the purchase, and a signed lease agreement if the trailer is leased.1Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Vehicle Registration Dealers usually handle the title application when you buy from them. In a private sale, the seller signs the title over to you, and you take it in yourself.

Both the registration and the sales tax payment have to be done within 30 days of the purchase date.1Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Vehicle Registration There is no flat late fee for missing the window, but law enforcement can cite you for towing an unregistered trailer on public roads.

Once you pay, the treasurer issues a registration certificate and a license plate. The plate goes on the rear of the trailer. Registration renews annually, and the county sends a renewal notice before the expiration date. Renewals can be done online, by mail, or in person.1Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Registration Fees by Trailer Type

Fees are set by statute and depend on what kind of trailer you have.2Justia. Nebraska Code 60-3,151 – Trailers Types of License Plates Recreational Vehicles Registration Fee

  • Commercial trailers and semitrailers: $1.
  • Utility trailers: $1 per 1,000 pounds of gross vehicle weight (or fraction thereof), up to 9,000 pounds. A 4,500-pound utility trailer costs $5. Anything over 9,000 pounds that is not a farm trailer must be registered as a commercial trailer.
  • Cabin trailers (travel trailers): $9 for 1,000 pounds or less, $12 for 1,001 to 1,999 pounds, and $15 for 2,000 pounds or more.
  • Farm trailers: $1. If used with a registered farm truck, the owner can instead register the trailer as a separate unit at $3 per ton of gross vehicle weight, which keeps it from counting as a truck-and-trailer combination.
  • Fertilizer trailers (standard and commercial): $1.
  • Pole and cable reel trailers: $2 per 1,000-pound load capacity (or fraction thereof), maximum 16,000 pounds. These must be owned and operated exclusively by public utility companies.

The registration fee alone rarely tells you what the trip to the treasurer will cost. The other two lines on the bill usually add up to more than the fee itself.

Motor Vehicle Tax and Sales Tax

Nebraska charges a motor vehicle tax every year when you register or renew. The base amount is $10 for most trailers and $110 for semitrailers.3Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Motor Vehicle Tax Calculation Table The base is then multiplied by a percentage that depends on the trailer’s age:

  • Years 1 through 5: 100% of the base tax.
  • Years 6 through 10: 70% of the base tax.
  • Year 11 and older: 35% of the base tax.

A 12-year-old utility trailer, for example, owes $3.50 in motor vehicle tax at renewal on top of its registration fee.3Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Motor Vehicle Tax Calculation Table

Sales tax is the bigger number, and it is collected once, at registration. Nebraska’s state rate is 5.5%, with local jurisdictions adding on top of that.4Nebraska Department of Revenue. Local Sales and Use Tax Rates A $5,000 utility trailer carries at least $275 in state sales tax, before any local rate. Sales tax has to be paid within 30 days of the purchase.

Do You Need Insurance on the Trailer

No. Nebraska’s proof of financial responsibility requirement applies to registered motor vehicles and specifically exempts trailers, along with boats and snowmobiles.5Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Insurance Requirements (Proof of Financial Responsibility) The towing vehicle’s liability policy is expected to extend to whatever it is pulling. You will not be asked for proof of trailer insurance at the treasurer’s office. Whether your auto policy actually covers the trailer you plan to tow, and any cargo on it, is worth a call to your insurer, because some policies limit or exclude heavier trailers.

Farm Trailers

Farm trailers are exempt from the Motor Vehicle Certificate of Title Act, meaning they do not need a title at all.6Nebraska Legislature. Nebraska Statute 60-137 – Act Applicability They still have to be registered, and the fee is $1.2Justia. Nebraska Code 60-3,151 – Trailers Types of License Plates Recreational Vehicles Registration Fee Farm trailer plates carry the letter “X” alongside the registration number.

Use governs the category, not the label a previous owner attached to it. If you buy something advertised as a farm trailer but plan to use it commercially or for personal recreation, you register it under the category that matches your actual use and pay the corresponding fee.

Homemade and Custom-Built Trailers

Building your own trailer is legal, but you cannot title or register it until the state assigns it a VIN through the Assigned ID Number program.7Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Assigned ID Number The steps:

  • Complete the Application for Assigned ID Number. The name on the application has to match the name on the sheriff’s inspection, and you need a Nebraska address.
  • Schedule a sheriff’s inspection through your county sheriff’s office. This is mandatory for all homemade trailers.
  • Gather proof of ownership: photocopies of receipts for the parts and materials you used, or a bill of sale if you bought it already built but without a VIN.
  • Submit the application with a $20 fee.

Once approved, the DMV mails a VIN plate along with an affidavit and instructions on where to attach the plate. You affix the plate, sign the affidavit, and bring it to the county treasurer to apply for the title. Registration then proceeds like any other trailer.7Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Buying Used or Bringing a Trailer from Out of State

In a private sale, the seller assigns the title to you by signing it over. You have 30 days from the date the trailer is delivered to apply for a new certificate of title in your name. That deadline is statutory. If you miss it, the seller can ask the DMV to update the electronic title record to reflect the sale so they are not left holding liability, but that does not get you a title. You still need to complete the application yourself.

Take the assigned title to the county treasurer along with proof of sales tax paid. If the trailer had been registered as a farm trailer and you are not using it for farming, register it in the category that fits your use.

Trailers coming into Nebraska from another state need a vehicle inspection before they can be titled and registered. This applies to every out-of-state trailer, not just those with salvage or rebuilt titles.8Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles. Vehicle Inspection The inspection verifies the VIN against the documents.

While you are arranging the inspection and finishing paperwork, the In Transit sticker program lets you legally operate a newly purchased trailer on Nebraska roads for 30 days. The same 30-day window covers you if you have plates from a previous vehicle that need to be transferred to a new trailer.9Nebraska Legislature. Nebraska Code 60-376 – Operation of Vehicle Without Registration In Transit Sticker Records Required Proof of Ownership The sticker is a bridge, not a substitute. Once the 30 days run out, an unregistered trailer on public roads is a citation waiting to happen.
