Renewing a Nevada CCW permit takes three things: a four-hour firearms safety course built for renewal applicants, a fresh background check, and an in-person visit to the sheriff’s office that issued your original permit. Permits run five years, and you can start the renewal up to 120 days before yours expires. Start early. The paperwork is simple once you have the training certificate in hand, but scheduling and background processing can each eat weeks.
When Your Permit Expires
Under the Nevada Administrative Code, your permit expires on the fifth anniversary of the birthday nearest to the date it was issued or last renewed, not on the exact anniversary of issuance.1Nevada Legislature. Nevada Administrative Code 202 – Concealed Firearms That birthday rule catches people. If your permit was issued in March but your birthday is in January, it expires in January five years later. Check the date printed on the card rather than counting from when you picked it up.
You can begin the renewal process up to 120 days before that expiration date. Your current permit stays valid until it expires no matter when you file, so there’s no penalty for starting early and every reason to do so: training slots fill up, sheriff appointments book out, and background investigations can run long.
The Renewal Training Course
Before you can submit a renewal application, you need to complete a four-hour firearms safety course designed for renewal applicants.2Churchill County Nevada. Nevada Concealed Handgun Training Standards It’s shorter than the eight-hour course required of first-time applicants, but it still includes live-fire qualification with a handgun. You must pass the qualification to get a certificate.
The course has to be one approved by a Nevada sheriff or offered by a law enforcement agency, community college, university, or national organization that certifies firearms instructors.3Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 202.3657 – Application for and Issuance of Permit In Clark County, LVMPD requires training to be completed by a certified instructor within the county before you submit your application.4Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Keep the signed completion certificate. The sheriff’s office won’t process your application without it.
Documents and Fees
Assemble the following before you schedule your appointment:
- The renewal application, downloaded from the sheriff’s office website in your county of residence. You’ll sign it under oath and answer disclosure questions about your criminal history and mental health. Answering falsely is grounds for immediate denial and can bring criminal charges.5Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Apply for a CCW Permit Online
- Your signed training certificate from the four-hour renewal course.
- A valid Nevada driver’s license or state ID showing your current address. If you’ve moved since your last permit, update your ID at the DMV before your appointment.4Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Concealed Carry Firearm Permits
What It Costs
The renewal fee has two statutory pieces: a $25 administrative fee plus a background check fee set at whatever the Central Repository for Nevada Records of Criminal History and the FBI charge at their current nonvolunteer rate.6Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 202.3677 – Application for Renewal of Permit; Fees; Demonstrated Continued Competence Required In practice, total renewal fees run roughly $60 to $65 depending on the county. If you’re renewing after your permit has already expired, add a $15 late fee. All fees are nonrefundable, even if you’re denied.
Payment methods vary. Some offices accept only money orders or credit cards (sometimes with processing surcharges), and many don’t take cash. Call ahead or check your sheriff’s website before you show up.
The In-Person Appointment
You have to appear in person at the sheriff’s office that issued your original permit. Most counties use an online scheduling system. Book as soon as you finish training, particularly in Clark County, where wait times can stretch several weeks during busy periods.
At the appointment, staff take a fresh set of fingerprints and a current photo. Your prints go to the Central Repository for Nevada Records of Criminal History and then to the FBI for a national criminal history check.7Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 202.366 – Investigation of Applicant for Permit The investigation also runs a query through the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. The new photo goes on your renewed card.
Bring your completed application, training certificate, valid ID, and payment. Having everything organized saves time at the window and avoids a wasted trip.
Processing Timeline
Background investigations can take up to 120 days.8Humboldt County, NV. Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office – CCW Permits Some counties finish faster, but the sheriff’s office is allowed the full window. Keep the receipt from your submission. If your current permit expires while processing is still underway and you submitted before the expiration date, that receipt is your evidence that you acted in time.
Once approved, the sheriff’s office mails the new permit card to the address on your application. If it doesn’t arrive within a reasonable timeframe after you’re notified of approval, call the office. Mail theft is a real concern with documents tied to firearms.
If You Miss the Deadline
If your permit expires before you submit a renewal application, you enter a 120-day grace period. You can still renew during this window, but you’ll owe the extra $15 late fee on top of the standard renewal costs.6Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 202.3677 – Application for Renewal of Permit; Fees; Demonstrated Continued Competence Required Just as important: carrying concealed on an expired permit is legally risky. An expired permit is not a valid permit.
Once the 120-day grace window closes, the permit is gone. You cannot renew it. You’d have to start over as a new applicant, which means the longer eight-hour training course, a full initial application, and typically higher fees.
What Can Block a Renewal
Renewal isn’t automatic. The sheriff who issued your original permit will run a full background investigation, the same kind you went through the first time, to confirm you’re still qualified to carry.7Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 202.366 – Investigation of Applicant for Permit Anything that changed in the past five years can affect your eligibility.
Nevada law requires the sheriff to deny a renewal or revoke an existing permit if the applicant:
- Has a felony conviction in any jurisdiction
- Has a misdemeanor involving force or violence within the past three years
- Has a domestic violence or stalking conviction, or is subject to a protective order against domestic violence
- Is on parole or probation from any state
- Has an outstanding arrest warrant
- Has been judged mentally incompetent or admitted to a mental health facility within the past five years
- Has a DUI conviction or substance abuse treatment within the past five years
- Provided false information on any permit application
These are mandatory denials. The sheriff has no discretion to overlook them.3Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 202.3657 – Application for and Issuance of Permit
Federal law adds a second layer. Under 18 U.S.C. ยง 922(g), you’re barred from possessing any firearm if you’ve been convicted of a crime punishable by more than a year in prison, are a fugitive, use controlled substances, have been committed to a mental institution, or have been dishonorably discharged from the military, among other categories.9Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Identify Prohibited Persons Nevada’s investigation checks both state and federal databases, so a disqualifier at either level ends the renewal.
One narrower point matters for younger permit holders. Nevada generally requires permit holders to be at least 21, with an exception for active-duty military, reservists, National Guard, and veterans discharged under honorable conditions, who can hold a permit starting at 18.3Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 202.3657 – Application for and Issuance of Permit If your original permit ran under that military exception, a discharge under other-than-honorable conditions during the permit term would disqualify you at renewal.
If Your Renewal Is Denied
The sheriff must send you a written explanation stating the specific legal reasons for the denial.1Nevada Legislature. Nevada Administrative Code 202 – Concealed Firearms Read it carefully. Denials sometimes come from outdated records, misidentification, or a conviction that has since been expunged.
If you think the denial was wrong, you can petition for judicial review in the district court of the county where you applied. The court’s review is limited to whether the sheriff’s decision was arbitrary or an abuse of discretion. It is not a full new hearing on the merits.10Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 202.3663 – Judicial Review of Denial of Application for Permit A firearms attorney can help you decide whether the denial has a legitimate basis or is worth challenging.
Address Changes During the Permit Term
If you moved during your permit’s five-year term and never told the sheriff, handle that before you renew. Nevada requires written notice to the issuing sheriff’s office within 30 days of a move, and skipping the notice carries a $25 civil penalty.5Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Apply for a CCW Permit Online An outdated address also complicates any law enforcement encounter and can delay the mailing of your renewed card.
Non-residents renew through the same sheriff’s office that issued the original permit, following the same training, background check, in-person, and fee requirements.3Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 202.3657 – Application for and Issuance of Permit Plan the trip to Nevada around the fingerprinting appointment, which cannot be done remotely.
