Nevada has no state income tax. If you live and work in Nevada, the state takes nothing from your wages, salary, tips, bonuses, interest, dividends, capital gains, gambling winnings, or retirement income. You do not file a state return. Federal income tax still applies to all of these, so the “no tax” part stops at the state line.1State of Nevada Department of Taxation. Income Tax in Nevada
Nevada replaces the revenue with sales taxes, property taxes, gaming revenue, and a handful of business taxes. If you are moving here, retiring here, or running a company here, the shape of your tax bill changes rather than disappears.
What Nevada Doesn’t Tax
The absence of a personal income tax is the headline, and it is real. Pensions, 401(k) distributions, IRA withdrawals, and Social Security benefits all pass through untouched at the state level. That is why the state tends to rank well for retirees comparing it to states that tax some or all retirement income.
Nevada also does not assess a corporate net income tax on business profits.2State of Nevada Department of Taxation. Commerce Tax That is a genuine draw for incorporations, but it does not mean businesses operate tax-free in Nevada. More on that below.
There is no state estate tax and no inheritance tax. Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 375A contains estate tax provisions, but the tax has produced no liability since the federal credit it was tied to was phased out in 2001. Your heirs will not owe Nevada anything on what you leave them, though federal estate tax still applies to estates above the federal exemption.
What Nevada Taxes Instead
Sales and Use Tax
Sales tax is Nevada’s largest single revenue source. The statewide base rate is 6.85%, and counties add their own surcharges on top.3State of Nevada Department of Taxation. Property Tax
Property taxes are administered at the county level, but the state sets the valuation rules and caps how fast your bill can rise. Taxable value combines the land’s full cash value with the replacement cost of any improvements, less depreciation.6Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 361.227 – Determination of Taxable Value Because the calculation focuses on construction cost rather than market demand, taxable value often lands well below what a home would sell for.
The annual increase on your bill is capped at 3% for an owner-occupied primary residence and up to 8% for everything else, including rentals, commercial property, and vacant land.7State of Nevada Department of Taxation. Final NRS 361.4722 Tax Cap Factors The cap applies to the bill itself, not the assessed value, so assessed value can climb faster than the bill.
Vehicle Registration
Registering a car brings a Governmental Services Tax that acts as a personal property tax on the vehicle. The rate is 4 cents per dollar of depreciated value, starting at 35% of original MSRP and dropping each year. A two-year-old vehicle with a $20,000 original MSRP owes roughly $238 in GST. Some counties add a Supplemental GST of 1 cent per dollar for highway construction, which in that same example adds about $60.8Nevada DMV. Vehicle Registration Fees
Real Property Transfer Tax
When real estate changes hands, the buyer or seller pays a transfer tax at recording. The statewide base is $1.95 per $500 of value (or fraction of it) above $100. Clark County adds $0.60 per $500, and Washoe and Churchill Counties add $0.10 per $500.9State of Nevada. Taxes on Businesses Operating in Nevada
Skipping the corporate income tax is not the same as skipping business tax. Nevada uses three separate mechanisms.
Every business operating in the state must hold a State Business License. Corporations pay $500 per year; other entity types pay $200 per year. A late renewal adds a $100 penalty.11Nevada Secretary of State. State Business License – FAQ
The Commerce Tax is a gross revenue tax, not a profit tax. Only businesses whose Nevada gross revenue exceeds $4 million in a fiscal year owe it, and only the revenue above the $4 million threshold is taxed. Businesses at or below $4 million do not need to file a return at all.12Nevada Department of Taxation. Instructions for Commerce Tax Return Rates vary by industry (NAICS code) and are low in absolute terms, but because the tax hits gross revenue, a business running at a loss can still owe it.
The Modified Business Tax is a payroll tax on employers, applied to gross wages minus employer-provided health care costs. The general rate is 1.17% of taxable wages, with the first $50,000 in wages each quarter exempt. Financial institutions pay 1.554% on all wages after health deductions, with no quarterly exemption.13State of Nevada Department of Taxation. Modified Business Tax (MBT) FAQs Employers who owe both taxes can apply 50% of what they paid in Commerce Tax as a non-refundable credit against MBT for the same period.14State of Nevada: Department of Taxation. Becoming a Nevada Resident for Tax Purposes
Moving to Nevada to escape another state’s income tax only works if you actually become a Nevada resident. Owning property here is not enough. Nevada law requires physical presence during the period you claim residency, with intent to make the state your permanent home.15State of Nevada Department of Taxation. Nevada Legal Residency
Domicile turns on a mix of factors, none decisive on its own: where you spend most of your time, where your immediate family lives, where your children attend school, where you are registered to vote, where your vehicles are registered, where you keep bank accounts, the address on your federal return, the state named in your will, and where you see your doctors. Nevada lets you file a formal declaration of domicile with the district court clerk in your county for a $5 fee. If you keep a home in another state, the declaration must state that your Nevada residence is your predominant and principal home. Filing is not required, but it creates a dated record of intent.
The audit risk usually comes from the state you left, not from Nevada. High-tax states audit departing residents aggressively, especially anyone who sold a business or booked a large income year around the move. Auditors will ask for cell phone location records, credit card statements, travel logs, and utility bills to reconstruct where you actually spent your days. Keeping a driver’s license, a country club membership, or a lived-in house back home can undo your Nevada claim even if you sleep in Las Vegas most nights. The cleaner the break, the stronger the position.
