Nevada’s left lane law, NRS 484B.208, tells you to get out of the far-left lane on a controlled-access highway when two things are true at once: you’re driving below the posted speed limit, and a faster vehicle is coming up behind you. That’s the core rule. An amended version takes effect on July 1, 2026, adding enhanced penalties for violations in work zones and pedestrian safety zones, and carving out an exception for driving inside cities and towns.1Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code NRS 484B – Rules of the Road
What the Statute Requires
Under the amended version, the rule applies on any controlled-access highway with two or more lanes running the same direction. You cannot keep driving in the far-left lane if you know, or reasonably should know, that you are traveling below the posted speed limit and a faster vehicle is overtaking you from behind.1Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code NRS 484B – Rules of the Road Both conditions have to be present at the same time before the law is triggered.
The version in effect through June 30, 2026, is worded more broadly. It tells any vehicle traveling below the posted speed limit on any highway to use the extreme right-hand lane or stay as close as practicable to the right edge of the roadway.1Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code NRS 484B – Rules of the Road That older version isn’t limited to controlled-access highways but carries an exception for driving outside urban areas that narrows its practical reach.
The Speed Limit Trigger People Miss
The law only bites when you’re going slower than the posted limit. Cruising at exactly 65 in a 65 zone does not oblige you to leave the left lane under NRS 484B.208, even if the driver behind you wants to go faster.1Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code NRS 484B – Rules of the Road The statute’s wording ties the duty to traveling “at a rate of speed which is less than the posted speed limit.” Nothing in it requires you to exceed the limit to comply.
That said, holding the left lane at the speed limit isn’t necessarily wise. Other drivers may flash lights or tailgate, and a separate statute discussed below can still apply if your driving impedes traffic behind you.
When You Can Legally Stay Left
The amended statute lists several situations where the left lane is fair game even if you’re under the speed limit:1Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code NRS 484B – Rules of the Road
- Overtaking and passing another vehicle traveling in the same direction.
- Preparing to make a left turn.
- Driving in a designated HOV lane while meeting its occupancy rules.
- Operating a vehicle engaged in highway construction, maintenance, repair, or snow removal.
- Unsafe conditions or obstructions that make staying left necessary.
- Following traffic control devices or the direction of a police officer.
- Driving an authorized emergency vehicle on duty.
Once you’ve completed a pass and have clearance to move back, move back. The exceptions cover the moment, not the whole trip.
The City and Town Carve-Out
Starting July 1, 2026, NRS 484B.208 does not apply within the geographical limits of a city or town.1Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code NRS 484B – Rules of the Road Driving on a controlled-access highway through Las Vegas, Reno, Henderson, or any other incorporated municipality, the left-lane camping prohibition technically does not reach you. The rule is aimed at open highway between cities, where a slow driver in the left lane forces everyone behind to pass on the right.
Fines, Points, and Work Zone Enhancements
A left lane violation is a traffic infraction, not a criminal offense. Commonly reported fines run $50 for a first offense, $100 for a second, and $250 for a third. Those amounts come from court schedules and administrative rules rather than the statute itself, so the actual fine can vary by court.
The July 2026 amendment adds a penalty enhancement when the violation occurs in a work zone, a pedestrian safety zone, or other designated area under related NRS provisions.1Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code NRS 484B – Rules of the Road Nevada’s general work-zone provision can double the fine for traffic violations in an active construction area, so left-lane camping through a work zone after July 1, 2026, gets expensive quickly.
Whether the ticket adds demerit points is less settled. The Nevada DMV’s published demerit point schedule does not specifically list a left lane violation as a scored offense.2Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles. Demerit Point System Some sources report no points for a first offense and points on repeats. Check with the DMV or the citing court to confirm. Accumulating 12 or more demerit points in a 12-month period can trigger a license suspension.
The Broader Slow-Driver Rule
Nevada has a second statute that often gets confused with the left lane law. NRS 484B.627 applies to any driver moving slowly enough to impede traffic behind them, regardless of lane. Depending on the road, you’re required to move to the extreme right side of a two-lane highway, use the far-right lane on a multi-lane highway, or take an alternate route on a controlled-access highway when possible.3Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 484B.627 – Duties of Driver or Operator Driving or Operating Motor Vehicle at Speed So Slow as to Impede Forward Movement of Traffic
The important distinction: NRS 484B.208 is triggered by being under the speed limit in the left lane with a faster car closing in. NRS 484B.627 is triggered by impeding traffic, in any lane, even at the speed limit if conditions have others moving faster. It also prohibits stopping on the roadway in a way that blocks normal flow, except when safety or law requires it.
When You Have to Move Left
Nevada’s Move Over law, NRS 484B.607, sometimes requires the opposite move. When you approach a traffic incident — a stopped emergency vehicle, tow truck, NDOT vehicle, public utility vehicle, or any stalled car with flashing lights — you must slow down and, if possible, move into a lane that isn’t next to the incident.4Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 484B.607 – Duties of Driver When Approaching Traffic Incident On a multi-lane highway that often means shifting left.
This duty overrides the general keep-right rule, and it carries a heavier consequence than a left lane citation. A Move Over violation is classified as a misdemeanor.4Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes 484B.607 – Duties of Driver When Approaching Traffic Incident Flashing lights on the shoulder mean move over safely first.
If You’re From Out of State
A Nevada citation doesn’t necessarily stay in Nevada. Most states participate in the Driver License Compact, which requires your home state to treat out-of-state moving violations as if they had happened at home and to apply its own point system and consequences.5The Council of State Governments. Driver License Compact The Compact excludes non-moving offenses like parking tickets, but a left lane infraction is a moving violation on repeat offenses and can follow you back.
Insurance is the more common downstream cost. Insurers pull driving records at renewal and price moving violations into premiums. A single minor infraction may not move much, but repeat left lane tickets stacked on other violations show a pattern underwriters notice.
