Nevada Sales Tax Holiday: Dates, Eligibility, and Refund Process

The Nevada sales tax holiday is a Nevada Day weekend benefit reserved for Nevada National Guard members and their close household relatives, not a general public sale. In 2026 it runs Friday, October 30 through Sunday, November 1. Since 2023, it works as a refund: you pay sales tax at the register like anyone else, then file paperwork with the Nevada Department of Taxation to get it back.

2026 Dates

Nevada Day falls on the last Friday in October, which is October 30 in 2026.1Nevada Division of Human Resource Management. State Holidays The exemption covers that Friday plus the immediately following Saturday and Sunday, so the three eligible shopping days are October 30, October 31, and November 1.2Nevada Legislature. Who Qualifies

Two groups can claim the holiday: Nevada National Guard members on active status who are Nevada residents, and certain relatives who live in the member’s home.2Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 372 – Sales and Use Taxes Active status is defined by federal law and is broader than deployment; a Guard member currently serving in the organized militia generally qualifies.

A qualifying relative has to clear two tests. They must share a home with the Guard member, and they must be related within the first degree by blood, adoption, or marriage. In practice that means a spouse, parent, or child.2Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 372 – Sales and Use Taxes A sibling, grandparent, adult child living elsewhere, or roommate does not qualify, no matter how close the relationship or how much support the Guard member provides.

What You Can Buy

The exemption applies to tangible personal property — physical goods you can see and touch. Clothing, electronics, appliances, furniture, sporting goods, and household items all count. There is no price cap on any single item and no ceiling on total weekend spending.2Nevada Legislature. Nevada Revised Statutes Chapter 372 – Sales and Use Taxes

Services, digital products, and labor charges are not covered. If you buy an appliance and pay a separate delivery or installation fee, only the appliance itself qualifies for the refund.

How the Refund Process Works

This is where the holiday most often trips people up. Before Senate Bill 50 took effect on July 1, 2023, shoppers handed a letter of exemption to the cashier and skipped sales tax at checkout. That is no longer how it works. Retailers are required to charge you the full sales tax, and they have no role in administering the exemption.3Nevada Department of Taxation. Nevada Tax Notes Issue 197 If a cashier refuses to charge tax on the strength of your letter, that is the retailer’s compliance problem, not a benefit to you.

You pay the tax, keep the receipt, and then submit a refund request to the Nevada Department of Taxation within 30 calendar days of each purchase. The submission must include:4Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code 372.7282 – Claim of Exemption by Certain Members of Nevada National Guard

  • A written refund request.
  • A copy of your letter of exemption from the Department of Taxation.
  • The receipt from the retailer showing sales tax was paid.

The statute provides no late-filing option. If you miss the 30-day window, or if a receipt goes missing, that refund is gone.

Getting Your Letter of Exemption

You cannot claim a refund without a letter of exemption issued in advance by the Department of Taxation. Applications go through your National Guard unit’s administrative personnel, not directly to the Department.3Nevada Department of Taxation. Nevada Tax Notes Issue 197

By statute, your application must be filed at least 30 days before Nevada Day, and the Department is allowed to require it as early as 45 days before.4Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code 372.7282 – Claim of Exemption by Certain Members of Nevada National Guard For the 2026 holiday, that puts the latest possible cutoff at September 30, with a realistic earliest cutoff around September 15. Start the paperwork with your unit in August. The letter, once issued, expires December 31 of the year it was issued and can be renewed the following year. You do not present it at any store; it exists to accompany your refund request.

How Much You Save

Nevada’s combined state and local sales tax rate runs from 6.85% in counties such as Humboldt and Eureka to 8.375% in Clark County, which includes Las Vegas.5Nevada Department of Taxation. County Map of Nevada – Sales Tax Rates The refund covers the full combined rate.

On a $2,000 furniture purchase in Las Vegas, that is $167.50 back. The same purchase in a 6.85% county returns $137. Because there is no spending cap, the holiday rewards planned big-ticket buys: a $5,000 Clark County shopping weekend returns almost $419.

Mistakes That Cost People the Refund

  • Expecting tax-free checkout. Retailers must charge you sales tax. Showing your letter at the register does nothing.
  • Missing the application deadline. No letter, no refund. File in August or early September.
  • Losing receipts. The Department needs a receipt for every purchase you want refunded. Photograph each one on the spot as a backup.
  • Missing the 30-day refund window. Each purchase starts its own clock, and the November timing runs headlong into the holidays.
  • Assuming all family qualifies. A relative must live in the Guard member’s home and be within the first degree of relationship.

A Separate Exemption for Deployed Guard Members

The same statute creates a broader, year-round exemption for Guard members called to active duty outside the United States for more than 30 days, and this one works differently from the Nevada Day holiday. There is no Nevada residency requirement, and it still uses the old point-of-sale process: the deployed member (or a qualifying first-degree household relative) presents the letter of exemption to the retailer, and the retailer does not collect sales tax.2Nevada Legislature.
