New Hampshire Change of Address: DMV, USPS, and Voter Updates

A New Hampshire change of address starts with the DMV: state law gives you 30 days from your move to update your driver’s license and vehicle registration records. From there, the list runs through the U.S. Postal Service, your new town clerk for voter registration, the IRS and Social Security Administration, your insurance company and financial accounts, your town’s assessor if you own property, and any New Hampshire professional licensing board you’re registered with. None of the others carry the DMV’s hard statutory deadline, but each matters, and mail that misses you can turn into a bill, a bounced check, or a missed notice fast.

Mail Forwarding Through USPS

Mail forwarding is separate from any state filing, and skipping it means weeks of mail going to the wrong place. File online at the USPS site for a $1.25 identity verification fee, or walk into any post office and complete PS Form 3575 for free. The online path needs a credit card whose billing address matches your old or new address, plus a mobile phone for the verification code. If you can’t verify online, or you’re filing for someone else, bring a photo ID to the post office.6USPS. Standard Forward Mail and Change of Address

Once active, forwarding covers first-class mail for 12 months. Treat it as a bridge, not a solution. Banks, insurers, subscription services, and anyone else who sends you something important still needs direct notification before the forwarding window closes.

Voter Registration

New Hampshire has no online voter registration. You register in person at your new town or city clerk’s office, where staff will give you the form to complete on the spot.7New Hampshire Secretary of State. IRS and Social Security

Topic No. 157, Change Your Address – How to Notify the IRS If you’re moving close to tax season, filing your return with the new address updates your records automatically and skips the separate form. New Hampshire has no state income tax, so there’s nothing to file at the state level for income tax purposes, but your federal return still needs the current address.

For Social Security, if you already receive benefits, sign in to your online account and update your mailing address under My Profile. If you’re not currently receiving benefits, the online portal won’t let you make the change. Insurance, Bank, and Mortgage Accounts

Your auto insurance premium is tied to the ZIP code where your car is primarily parked, what insurers call the garaging address. Moving even a short distance into a different ZIP code can shift your rate because insurers price in local traffic, claims history, and the share of uninsured drivers. If you don’t update the garaging address and the insurer later finds out you moved, a claim can be denied. Notify your carrier as soon as you move.

Moving into New Hampshire from another state is a bigger adjustment. New Hampshire is one of the few states that does not require auto liability insurance for all drivers, but your previous state almost certainly did, and your current policy will need to be adjusted or replaced to fit New Hampshire’s rules. Your insurer may ask for proof of the new address, such as a utility bill or bank statement.

Tell your bank, credit card companies, and mortgage servicer as well. No federal deadline sets when a mortgage servicer has to be notified, but if escrow statements, tax documents, or delinquency warnings go to a place you no longer live, problems can escalate before you know they exist.13Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Mortgage Servicing Transfers Most lenders accept the change through their online portal or by phone.

Property Tax Records and Professional Licenses

If you own property in New Hampshire, your town’s assessor needs your current mailing address so your tax bill reaches you. Landlords and people who own property in a town they’ve since left are the ones who get caught out. A bill sent to the wrong address does not excuse a late payment, and delinquent property taxes accrue interest quickly. Contact the assessing office in the town where the property sits.

If you hold a New Hampshire professional license, whether in nursing, cosmetology, real estate, engineering, or any of the other fields the state regulates, update your address through the Office of Professional Licensure and Certification.14New Hampshire Office of Professional Licensure and Certification. Welcome The online licensing portal lets you change contact information across multiple boards in a single session, with an email confirmation when the update posts.
