New Hampshire Driver’s License: Get, Renew, Replace, or Transfer

A New Hampshire driver’s license is issued by the state Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV), costs $50 for a standard operator credential or $60 for a REAL ID-compliant version, and is valid for five years, expiring on your birthday.1New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Licensing Fees2New Hampshire General Court. New Hampshire Code 263:10 – License Expiration Whether you’re applying for the first time, moving in from another state, renewing, or replacing a lost card, almost every transaction starts the same way: gather proof of who you are, where you live, and your Social Security number, then visit a DMV office or (for eligible renewals) use the online portal.

Documents You Need for Any Transaction

Three categories of paperwork run through almost everything the DMV does: proof of identity, your Social Security card, and proof of New Hampshire residency.3New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Apply For Your First Drivers License/Non Driver ID

  • Identity: an original or certified birth certificate, or a valid U.S. passport.
  • Social Security: the physical card, or an official document showing your full number.
  • Residency: utility bills, a signed lease, or property tax bills dated within 60 days.

You will also complete Form DSMV 450, the Application for Driver License, which asks for personal details and about any medical conditions that could affect driving safety.4New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Application for Driver License or Non-Driver ID Card Fill it out truthfully; submitting false information to a state agency carries its own penalties.

REAL ID or Standard

Since May 7, 2025, you need a REAL ID-compliant license (or a passport) to pass through TSA airport security for domestic flights. A standard New Hampshire license no longer works at the TSA checkpoint. REAL ID applications require stricter documentation, so check the DMV’s REAL ID document checklist before your visit. The REAL ID costs $60; the standard operator license is $50.1New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Licensing Fees If you don’t fly or enter federal buildings, the standard version is fine.

If You Are Not a U.S. Citizen

Eligibility depends on immigration status. Visitors on tourist visas (B1/B2) and fiancée visas (K1/K2) cannot get a New Hampshire license. Permanent residents, asylees, and refugees need an original Social Security card plus a valid permanent resident card, work authorization card, or I-551 passport stamp with at least 60 days before expiration. Temporary residents on work or student visas need a valid I-94 with at least two months of remaining duration and visa-specific documents, such as an I-20 for F-1 students or an employment letter dated within 60 days and printed on company letterhead for work visa holders. Offer letters and contracts are not accepted.5New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Non-US Citizen

Getting Your First License at 18 or Older

Bring your documents to a DMV office, submit Form DSMV 450, and pay the fee. You will take three tests, usually on the same visit.

NH Admin Code Saf-C 1004.08 – Special Visual Acuity Requirements If you fall short, a completed DSMV 61 form signed by an eye doctor can still qualify you.

Next is the knowledge test, a multiple-choice exam on New Hampshire traffic laws. Pass that, and a state examiner rides along for the road skills test, evaluating vehicle control, lane changes, turns, and intersections in real traffic.

Fail the road test and you must wait at least 10 days to retake it. Miss the appointment or cancel with less than 24 hours’ notice, and the wait jumps to 30 days.8New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Driver Licensing Testing Requirements

Once you pass, you walk out with a temporary paper license valid for 60 days. The permanent card arrives by mail, usually within 45 days and no later than 60. The paper version is legally valid during that window and must be shown if law enforcement asks.9NH Division of Motor Vehicles. Temporary Paper License

Drivers Under 18

Minors face extra requirements. Before applying, you must complete a New Hampshire-approved driver education program: at least 30 hours of classroom instruction, 10 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a certified instructor, and 6 hours of driving observation.10New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Driver Education On top of that, you need 40 hours of supervised driving with a parent or guardian, with at least 10 of those hours completed between sunset and sunrise.11New Hampshire Department of Safety. Parent or Guardian Authorization Certificate

A parent, guardian, or responsible adult must sign Form DSMV 38 to authorize the license. An emancipated minor who is married is excepted. If the signing adult later dies, the DMV can cancel the license until a new adult signs a fresh application.

Renewing Your License

About two months before your license expires, the DMV mails a renewal notice to the address on file. If the notice contains a Renewal Identification Number (RIN), you can renew online.15NH Division of Motor Vehicles. Online Renewals Online renewals reuse your existing photo. If you want an updated picture, or if certain medical or vision conditions apply, you’ll need to renew in person.

The renewal fee matches the original issuance cost: $50 standard, $60 REAL ID.1New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Active-Duty Military

Service members and their spouses stationed or deployed outside New Hampshire can renew by mail as many times as needed during active duty. If no photo is on file, the DMV issues a non-photo license. Once you return to the state, you have 30 days to visit a DMV office for a new photo.

Address and Name Changes

State law requires you to notify the DMV within 30 days of any address or name change.17New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles. Update Personal Information Submit a Record Change Request form online or at a DMV office. Keeping your address current is what gets the renewal notice to you; if the DMV sends it to an old address, you are still responsible for renewing on time.

If Your License Has Already Expired

Driving on a license that has been expired for less than 12 months is a violation and carries a $124 fine for a first offense. A second offense, or driving on a license expired more than 12 months, is a class B misdemeanor.18New Hampshire General Court. New Hampshire Code 263:1 – License Required; Penalty The renewal process itself gets harder the longer you wait:

  • Expired less than one year: standard renewal, no additional testing.
  • Expired one to three years: full identity and residency documentation at a DMV office.
  • Expired three years or more: you must pass the vision test, knowledge test, and road test again, effectively starting over.

One Thing to Know About Insurance

New Hampshire is one of the few states that does not require drivers to carry auto insurance. That surprises a lot of people. You can legally drive uninsured, but you are still personally responsible for damages if you cause an accident, and if you can’t pay, your license and registration can be suspended.19New Hampshire Insurance Department. Automobile Insurance Consumer Frequently Asked Questions The state’s minimum financial responsibility amounts are $25,000 for bodily injury to one person, $50,000 for bodily injury to two or more people in a single accident, and $25,000 for property damage.20New Hampshire General Court.
