Free interpreter services are available in virtually any language. For Spanish, press 7 when prompted. What You Can Handle Online Instead
A lot of what people call about can be done in a few minutes through a free my Social Security account at ssa.gov. That includes applying for retirement, disability, or Medicare benefits, checking the status of a pending application or appeal, changing your address, setting up or changing direct deposit, printing a benefit verification letter, viewing your earnings history, and requesting a replacement Social Security or Medicare card.6Social Security Administration. If all you need is a copy of your SSA-1099 or a benefit verification letter, the online route is almost always faster than waiting on hold. Save the phone for things that really need back-and-forth with a representative, like resolving a payment discrepancy or discussing a denial.
Book an Appointment Before You Visit

The agency has said it will not turn anyone away who shows up without one. Walk-in service continues for people in vulnerable situations, military personnel, individuals with terminal illnesses, and anyone with an urgent need, and offices with minimal wait times still take walk-ins.7Social Security Administration. What to Have Ready Before You Call
Representatives verify your identity before discussing anything about your account. At a minimum, have your Social Security number, full legal name, date of birth, and current mailing address ready. If you’re setting up or changing direct deposit, you’ll also need your bank’s nine-digit routing number and your account number, both of which are printed on personal checks or available through your bank’s app.9Go Direct. Timing Your Call and Avoiding Scams
Calling early in the morning or later in the week tends to mean shorter hold times. The first week of the month is consistently the busiest because that’s when most benefit payments go out, so mid-month is easier. If you’re only after a benefit verification letter or a replacement SSA-1099, the automated system can handle both without connecting you to an agent at all.
After your call, expect a written confirmation in the mail within about 10 business days for most changes.10Social Security Administration. How Can I Get a Benefit Verification Letter? If the representative asked for additional documents, don’t miss the deadline they gave you; re-opening a denied claim takes far longer than the call itself.
One thing worth knowing before your phone rings: scam callers impersonating SSA are common, and they spoof real government numbers and sometimes name real employees. The real SSA will never threaten arrest, tell you your Social Security number has been suspended, demand payment by gift card or wire transfer or cryptocurrency, or offer to move your money to a “protected” account. Problems with your number or record almost always arrive by U.S. mail first.
