To get a New Mexico REAL ID, you need to visit a Motor Vehicle Division office in person with one proof of identity, one document showing your Social Security number, and two documents proving your New Mexico address. The fee matches a standard license: $18 for four years or $34 for eight. Federal enforcement began May 7, 2025, so a non-compliant New Mexico license alone will no longer get you through a TSA checkpoint.1Transportation Security Administration. Documents You Need to Bring
Every document must be an original or a certified copy. Photocopies and printouts of scans will be rejected at the counter. Pull everything together before you book an appointment, because a missing paper means starting over.
One Proof of Identity and Age
A valid U.S. passport, U.S. passport card, or certified birth certificate from a state vital statistics office is the usual choice. A certificate of naturalization, certificate of citizenship, or consular report of birth abroad also works. Members of a federally recognized tribe who lack a birth certificate may submit an affidavit of birth from their nation.2Motor Vehicle Division NM. One Proof of Your Social Security Number
Your Social Security card is the cleanest option. A W-2, a 1099, or a pay stub showing your name and the full nine-digit number will also satisfy the requirement.3New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division. REAL ID
Two Proofs of New Mexico Residency
Both documents must show your name and the same physical New Mexico address. P.O. boxes don’t count.4New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division. Acceptable Documents for Real ID The date rules trip up more applicants than anything else, so check them carefully:
- Dated within 60 days: utility bills (water, gas, electric, phone, not cell phone), bank or credit card statements, pay stubs, and education transcripts or enrollment documents
- Dated within 6 months: insurance bills, cards, or binders
- Current and unexpired: rental or purchase agreements, property tax statements, government documents confirming residency, and Medicaid or public assistance letters
A utility bill from three months ago won’t be accepted, even with the correct address on it.3New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division. REAL ID
If Your Name Doesn’t Match Your Documents
When your current legal name differs from the name on your birth certificate or passport, you need to bring every document that links the two. Married twice and changed your name each time? Bring both marriage certificates. Acceptable linking documents include certified marriage certificates (not the decorative kind), divorce decrees that include a name restoration, court orders granting a legal name change, and adoption records.
The chain has to be unbroken. A missing link stops the application cold.3New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division. REAL ID If you changed your name informally years ago without a court order, you’ll either need to apply under the name on your identity document or obtain a court-ordered name change first.
How to Apply at the MVD
First-time REAL ID applications have to be done in person, because an agent must physically inspect your original documents. Schedule an appointment at mvdonline.com or by calling 888-683-4636. Walk-ins may be accepted depending on the office, but an appointment cuts the wait substantially.
At the counter, an agent reviews your documents, checks your information against federal databases, runs a vision screening, and takes your photograph. Once you clear, you leave with a temporary paper permit good for up to 45 days. The permanent card arrives by mail at the address on your application.5Motor Vehicle Division NM. What It Costs
REAL ID fees are the same as standard license fees:
- Four-year driver’s license: $18
- Eight-year driver’s license: $34
- Four-year identification card: $10
- Eight-year identification card: $18
If you’re transferring from an out-of-state license, add a $15 surcharge for a mandatory DWI records check. That brings the total to $33 for four years or $49 for eight.6Motor Vehicle Division NM. Drivers License Drivers 79 and older renew annually at no charge. Field offices accept cash, checks, money orders, and credit or debit cards, and fees are the same at every location.
Renewing or Replacing a REAL ID
Once you have a REAL ID, you can renew online through the MVD’s electronic services portal as long as none of your information has changed. Renewals are available up to 90 days before expiration, and the online option stays open for up to two years after the card expires.7Motor Vehicle Division NM. Renew a Driving Credential A change of address, name, or other key detail sends you back to a field office with updated documents.
Replacing a lost card requires the full set of original documents all over again: identity, Social Security number, and two residency papers. If the card was stolen, file a police report first. That report lets the MVD issue a replacement with a new license number, which helps if someone tries to misuse the old one. Replacements are in-person only.
When You Actually Need One
A REAL ID is required to board domestic commercial flights, enter nuclear power plants, and access federal facilities (including military bases) that check ID at the door. It is not required to drive, register to vote, or apply for Social Security or Medicare. New Mexico still issues a standard non-REAL ID license, and that card remains valid for driving, traffic stops, and age verification.5Motor Vehicle Division NM. Drivers Licenses and IDs
You can also skip the REAL ID entirely if you already carry a valid U.S. passport or passport card, a DHS trusted traveler card (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST), a U.S. military ID, a permanent resident card, a federally recognized tribal photo ID, or a Transportation Worker Identification Credential. New Mexico does not issue an Enhanced Driver’s License, so that alternative is not available to residents here. Children under 18 don’t need identification for domestic flights.8Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint
