New York Nissan Dealerships Settlement: Who Qualifies for a Refund

If you leased a Nissan in New York and bought it out at lease-end between January 2020 and March 2022, you may be owed a refund under the New York Nissan dealership settlement, and in most cases the check will come to you automatically. Attorney General Letitia James has recovered more than $4.5 million for over 3,100 consumers so far, and a June 2026 agreement with Nissan Motor Acceptance Company (NMAC) extends refunds to customers of every remaining Nissan dealership in the state.1NY AG. Who Qualifies for a Refund

The settlements cover New York consumers who exercised the purchase option on a Nissan “SignatureLease” and were charged more than the contract allowed. Under that lease, the only amounts a dealer could collect at buyout were the preset Purchase Option Price, a $300 purchase option fee, and applicable taxes and government charges. Any other fee added to the transaction, by any label, is an overcharge.2NY AG. Nissan 112 Settlement Agreement With AG

The NMAC audit covers lease buyouts completed between January 1, 2020 and March 1, 2022 at the 45 New York Nissan dealerships that did not settle individually. Fifteen other dealerships, listed below, settled directly with the AG’s office in earlier rounds and already issued their own refund checks to identified customers.3NY AG. How You’ll Get Paid

You do not need to file a claim. NMAC is required to audit each of the 45 remaining dealerships, identify every overcharged customer, and mail a refund check to the last known address on file. Payments are going out on a rolling basis throughout 2026.1NY AG. Attorney General James Secures Refunds for All New Yorkers Cheated by Nissan

Each check covers the full amount of the overcharge plus any extra loan interest you paid because the inflated figure was financed through NMAC. The refund is adjusted for inflation using the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ consumer price index for the New York metro area.3NY AG. NMAC Assurance of Discontinuance

If you’ve moved since your buyout, make sure Nissan has your current address. A check sent to an old apartment is still a check sent.

What to Do If You Think You Qualify but Haven’t Heard Anything

Pull out your lease buyout paperwork and compare the final invoice against your original lease. Look at the Purchase Option Price in your lease documents, add the $300 purchase option fee, then add sales tax and any legitimate government fees like registration and title. Anything else, whether labeled an administrative fee, dealership fee, documentation fee, CPO certification charge, recall repair, or inflated vehicle price, should not be there.

If the numbers don’t match and you haven’t received a refund check, file a complaint through the New York Attorney General’s online consumer complaint portal.1NY AG. Attorney General James Secures Refunds for All New Yorkers Cheated by Nissan

What the Overcharges Looked Like

Knowing the common tactics helps when you’re reading your own paperwork. Investigators found dealerships added unlabeled “administrative” or “dealership” fees on top of the contract price. Some simply inflated the vehicle price itself so the overcharge was hidden inside the purchase amount. Others billed for safety recall repairs that federal law requires manufacturers to perform at no cost, or disguised a Certified Pre-Owned inspection charge of $2,500 or more as a repair expense.1NY AG. Some charges were almost cartoonishly inflated. One customer was billed $2,563 for electrical tape that the dealership’s own records valued at eight cents. Another was charged for a “repair” that amounted to hosing off the vehicle.3NY AG. NMAC Assurance of Discontinuance4Carscoops. Nissan Lease Buyout Refunds

Dealerships That Settled Separately

If you bought out your lease at one of these 15 dealerships, your refund came directly from the dealer rather than through NMAC. If your dealership isn’t on these lists and you had a Nissan lease buyout in New York between January 2020 and March 2022, you fall under the NMAC audit and your check should arrive during 2026. If it doesn’t, and your paperwork shows an overcharge, file a complaint with the Attorney General’s office.
