When Your Permit Expires
Concealed carry permits recertify every three years. Premises-only permits recertify every five years.1Gun Safety in New York State. Pistol Permit Recertification The clock runs from the date your permit was issued or last successfully recertified.
The state does not guarantee you a reminder. Tracking the date is on you.
The 30-Day Grace Period
Your permit stays valid for 30 days past its stated expiration date. Submit a renewal application before your permit expires or is revoked, and the permit remains in effect until the licensing officer processes and decides on your application.2New York State Senate. File after the 30-day grace period and you get no such protection.
What You Need to Renew
Before you start the online form, pull together:

- Your New York State Driver License or Non-Driver Identification number.

Most of this is printed on your county-issued license. If your address or other personal details have changed, update them with your licensing authority before or during the recertification.
Filing Online With the State Police

After you submit, you should receive a confirmation with a recertification number. No new physical permit card is issued; your existing card stays valid once recertification goes through. Training Required for Concealed Carry Renewal
If you hold a concealed carry permit, paperwork alone will not renew it. The Concealed Carry Improvement Act established a mandatory firearms safety training course that applies to renewals as well as initial issuance: 16 hours of in-person classroom instruction plus 2 hours of live-fire range training, all conducted by a state-authorized instructor.4New York State Police. The live-fire portion includes a shooting assessment: at least four out of five rounds on a standard paper target from four yards. Your licensing officer verifies the training was completed before approving the renewal. If you completed a firearms safety course within the five years before September 1, 2022, the licensing officer has discretion to credit that prior training toward some or all of the current requirements.4New York State Police. Costs vary by instructor and location, roughly $80 to $350 plus range fees. Book early. Courses fill up, and you cannot recertify without the training certificate in hand.
If You Live in NYC, Nassau, Suffolk, or Westchester
Permit holders in New York City, Nassau County, Suffolk County, and Westchester County do not recertify through the State Police system. Each jurisdiction runs its own renewal process with its own rules, timelines, and fees.1Gun Safety in New York State. Contact your local licensing authority directly for current instructions rather than relying on the State Police site.
What Happens If You Miss the Deadline
Once your permit expires beyond the 30-day grace period without a pending renewal, your legal authorization to possess a handgun is gone. Continued possession can result in criminal charges.
The most common charge is criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree under Penal Law § 265.01, which covers possessing a firearm without a valid license and is a Class A misdemeanor.5New York State Senate. You also lose the option to simply recertify. A lapsed permit means a full re-application: meeting all current eligibility standards from scratch, on a much longer timeline, with no guarantee of approval. If you realize the date has passed, talk to an attorney and arrange lawful storage of your firearms while you work through the re-application.
Transporting a Firearm on an Expired Permit
A lapsed permit strips your legal basis to carry or possess your handgun in New York, transport included. Federal law does allow transporting an unloaded firearm through a state where you lack a permit, but only when you are traveling between two places where you can lawfully possess the firearm, and the gun must be locked in a container outside the passenger compartment, not in a glove box or console.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 18 USC 926A – Interstate Transportation of Firearms That federal rule does not cover moving a handgun around New York on an expired permit with no lawful destination at both ends. Do not assume you can quietly drive your firearms to a storage location once your permit has lapsed.
