New York sales tax on an iPhone runs between 7% and 8.875% of the price, depending on where the phone is delivered or picked up. The state charges a 4% base rate on tangible personal property, and every county and city stacks its own local rate on top.1New York State Senate. New York Tax Code 1105 – Imposition of Sales Tax On a $1,199 iPhone bought in New York City, that comes to roughly $106 at the register. Trade-ins, promotional structures, AppleCare, and shipping charges all move that number, sometimes in ways buyers don’t expect.
What Rate Applies Where
New York is a destination-based state. The rate that applies is the one at the address where the phone is delivered or the store where you pick it up, not where the retailer is based.2New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. The 8.875% ceiling covers New York City and Yonkers. It combines the 4% state rate, a 4.5% local rate, and a 0.375% Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District surcharge that applies throughout the MCTD, which includes New York City, the suburban counties, and parts of the lower Hudson Valley.3NYC311. Trade-Ins Reduce the Taxable Price
If you trade in your old phone at the point of sale, sales tax applies only to the price after the trade-in credit is subtracted.5New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Taxable Receipt – How Discounts, Trade-Ins, and Additional Charges Affect Sales Tax Buy a $999 iPhone with a $350 trade-in credit, and tax applies to $649.
Two conditions have to be met. The trade-in must be part of the same transaction as the new purchase, and the retailer must intend to resell the traded device. Apple Stores and major carrier locations generally meet both, but check that the trade-in appears as a line-item deduction on your receipt.5New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Selling your old phone separately, whether through a buyback service or a private sale, and then buying a new iPhone with the cash, doesn’t give you the tax break. The state treats those as two unrelated transactions, and tax applies to the full price of the new phone.
Discounts, Rebates, and Carrier Bill Credits
Not every price reduction lowers your tax. A discount funded by the retailer itself, whether a sale price, a loyalty discount, or a volume deal, reduces the taxable amount. A $999 phone marked down to $799 by the carrier is taxed at $799.5New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Manufacturer rebates work the other way. If Apple or a promotional partner funds the reduction and reimburses the retailer, sales tax applies to the full original price. Mail-in rebates paid to you after the sale don’t reduce the taxable receipt either. From the state’s perspective, the retailer got the full price, part from you and part from the manufacturer, so the full amount is what’s taxed.5New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. This matters most with carrier deals advertised as “iPhone for $0 with eligible trade-in and qualifying plan.” Those promotions are usually structured as 36 monthly bill credits against an installment plan. The phone’s full retail price is the taxable receipt, and the entire sales tax bill is collected upfront. On a $1,199 phone in New York City, that’s roughly $106 due at checkout even if your net monthly cost eventually reaches zero.
AppleCare, Accessories, and Shipping
AppleCare and other extended warranties are taxable. New York treats service contracts as taxable repair and maintenance services, at the same combined rate as the phone. If you buy AppleCare later, the rate is based on the location of the covered device, not where you buy the plan.6New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. Cases, chargers, screen protectors, and other accessories are fully taxable at the same rate as the phone. So is shipping. New York includes delivery charges in the taxable receipt whenever the item being shipped is itself taxable, whether the shipping is broken out on the receipt or bundled into the product price.8Department of Taxation and Finance. Buying an iPhone Out of State
Crossing into a lower-tax state to buy an iPhone doesn’t get you out of New York’s tax. If you’re a New York resident and you bring the phone home, you owe use tax at your local combined rate.9New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. You get a credit for sales tax legitimately paid to the other state, but only if that state offers a reciprocal credit for New York taxes. Buyers Who Can Skip the Tax
Most individual buyers owe the full amount. Qualifying nonprofits, religious organizations, and government entities can buy an iPhone tax-free by presenting a valid exemption certificate at the point of sale. The retailer is responsible for collecting and keeping that certificate; without one, the seller must charge full tax regardless of the buyer’s status. If you’re buying for a qualifying organization, confirm the certificate is current, uses the organization’s legal name, and is the correct New York form before you get to the register.
