NH Antique Plates: Requirements, Use Limits & Penalties

New Hampshire antique plates are available for vehicles at least 25 years old that are kept primarily for historical interest, and the tradeoff for the designation is that the vehicle cannot be used as everyday transportation. You can take it to car shows, parades, and club events. You cannot use it to commute or run errands. The registration fee for antique motor vehicles other than motorcycles rises to $16 effective January 1, 2026, prorated by the number of months in your registration period, on top of other applicable fees.¹

Which Vehicles Qualify

Two things have to be true. The vehicle must be at least 25 years old, and it must be kept primarily for historical interest.² It does not need to be in showroom condition, but it should retain its original design. Swapping in a modern engine or significantly altering the body can disqualify it. The statute’s definition of an antique motor vehicle also covers farm tractors, motorcycles, and trailers that meet the age threshold.

The requirement that trips people up is buried in the definition itself: the vehicle cannot be your regular transportation. If you need the car for work or daily errands, antique registration is not an option no matter how old the car is.

How to Register

Start with Form TDMV 105, the Affidavit of Ownership for Antique Vehicles, available from the New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicles.³ You provide the make, model, year, and VIN, and certify that the vehicle is not used for everyday driving. The $16 antique fee taking effect January 1, 2026 is in addition to any other applicable registration charges.¹

How You’re Allowed to Use the Vehicle

Antique-plated vehicles are limited to exhibitions, parades, club activities, and similar occasional outings.² Driving to work, school, or the grocery store is off-limits. That is the whole point of the plate class.

There is no specific annual mileage cap in the statute, but the absence of a number is not permission. If an antique-plated car turns up in a commuter lot every weekday, the pattern speaks for itself. Some owners keep a short log of date, destination, and purpose for each trip. Nothing in the law requires one, but it gives you something concrete if your use is ever questioned.

Winter driving deserves a second thought. Taking a vehicle you have registered as a historical collectible out in road salt and snow undercuts the claim that you are preserving it for historical interest, and it draws attention from both officers and insurers.

Displaying the Plates

Your registration plate has to be clearly visible and securely mounted. Any colored, smoked, or tinted covering is a separate violation, and decorative frames that partially block the lettering fall in the same category.⁴ Keep the plate clean and fully readable.

Year of Manufacture Plates

New Hampshire lets you display an original-year plate on your antique vehicle instead of a modern reproduction. You need a valid antique registration first, and then the vintage plate has to be recorded with the Director of Motor Vehicles. The plate must match the year the vehicle was built, and the number is logged in state records.²

For vehicles manufactured in 1975 or earlier, vintage plates can go on both front and rear. You still have to keep the official registration plate that matches your registration certificate inside the vehicle at all times, because an officer who stops you will want to see it. The vintage plate also needs to stay legible; a rusted-out plate with unreadable numbers will not pass.

Inspection Schedule

Antique plates do not exempt you from New Hampshire’s vehicle inspection program, but the schedule loosens with age. Antique motor vehicles and motorcycles 40 years old or older need inspection every two years instead of annually.⁵ Antique vehicles between 25 and 39 years old stay on the standard annual cycle.

Insurance

Standard auto policies are not built for a vehicle that spends most of the year in a garage and has irreplaceable value. Most collectors carry a specialty classic car policy, and the insurer’s restrictions often mirror the registration rules: pleasure use only, no commuting, and sometimes explicit mileage caps.

The important policy choice is how the vehicle gets valued. A standard policy uses actual cash value, which bakes in depreciation and can badly undervalue a restored classic. Specialty policies typically offer agreed value coverage, where you and the insurer set the vehicle’s worth in advance. If it is totaled or stolen, you receive that agreed amount without a depreciation deduction and without a post-loss argument.

Insurers often require the vehicle to be stored in a private garage, storage unit, or similar enclosed structure. An open carport or driveway can lead a carrier to decline coverage or charge more. Read the storage and usage terms closely, because a claim denied for policy non-compliance is worse than no claim at all.

Penalties for Misuse

New Hampshire treats antique plate violations as violation-level offenses rather than criminal charges, but the money adds up and the consequences reach past your wallet. Improper use of registration, such as lending plates or displaying plates not issued to your vehicle, carries a $150 fine.⁶ Operating a vehicle without valid registration, including one whose antique plates have been revoked, carries a $100 fine.⁷ Knowingly attaching plates assigned to another vehicle, obscuring plate numbers, or failing to display the correct plates is a separate violation.⁴

Repeat offenses escalate. New Hampshire’s fine schedule raises penalties for second and subsequent offenses within a calendar year, and some repeat offenses can be elevated to misdemeanor-level charges.⁸

Revocation and Appeals

The Division of Motor Vehicles can revoke antique plates when the vehicle is repeatedly used outside the permitted purposes. Officers document the violations and can recommend revocation. Once the DMV determines the rules were broken, you have to surrender the plates.

You can challenge a revocation by requesting an administrative hearing through the Department of Safety. Requests must be submitted in writing; phone requests are not accepted.⁹ At the hearing you can present evidence that your use fell within the permitted categories or that procedural errors occurred. If the revocation stands, you will need to re-register under standard plates, which means higher fees, annual inspections, and the loss of whatever collector value the antique designation carried. Driving on revoked antique plates is treated as operating an unregistered vehicle, with its own $100 fine and the risk of more serious charges if it continues.⁷
