When to Renew

New Jersey licenses are valid for four years (48 months). Drivers 70 and older can choose a two-year or four-year cycle.3Justia Law. What to Bring: 6 Points of ID

New Jersey uses a 6 Points of ID system. You combine documents from different categories until you reach at least six points total, and you also need two proofs of New Jersey address and verification of your Social Security number.5New Jersey Administrative Code. Primary Document

At least one primary document is required. Common four-point options are a U.S. birth certificate or certified copy, an unexpired U.S. passport, or a Certificate of Naturalization. An existing REAL ID-compliant New Jersey license also counts as a four-point primary, which is the simplest path if you’re renewing.5New Jersey Administrative Code. Secondary Document

You also need at least one secondary document. Marriage certificates, court-ordered name changes, school records, and military IDs are all accepted, and they carry between one and four points depending on the document. Social Security Number

You provide your SSN on the application, and the MVC verifies it with the Social Security Administration. If that verification fails, bring a document showing your full name and full SSN: the Social Security card itself, a W-2 or 1099 issued within the past year, or a pay stub with your full number.6New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Two Proofs of New Jersey Address

The two address documents each carry their own recency rules:

  • Utility or credit card bill issued within the past 90 days
  • Bank or credit union statement issued within the past 60 days
  • Tax bill, statement, or IRS correspondence issued within the past year
  • Government first-class mail received within the past six months
  • A current, unexpired lease or rental agreement
  • A valid NJ driver license or MVC renewal form showing your residential address

If Your Name Has Changed

When your legal name differs from the name on your birth certificate, you need documentation linking the two. The MVC accepts a certified marriage certificate, certified civil union certificate, divorce decree, or court order. A divorce decree only works if it contains both names and specifically allows use of the previous name. Booking the Appointment

Fill out Form BA-208, the Application for Permit/License/Non-Driver ID, before you go. The form is available as a PDF on the MVC website and asks for your full legal name, residential address, and Social Security number.8New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. At the agency, staff check your appointment, review your six points and residency documents, and take a new digital photo and signature.

Fees

A four-year REAL ID renewal costs $35, made up of the $24 base license fee and an $11 REAL ID fee. The $11 applies to every REAL ID transaction, first-time or renewal.9NJMVC REAL ID. After Your Appointment

Licenses are no longer printed at MVC agencies. You leave with a paper interim receipt that acts as your temporary license while your permanent card is produced at a centralized secure facility and mailed to you. The MVC estimates two to four weeks for delivery.4New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. Lost or Stolen Card

If your REAL ID is lost, stolen, or destroyed before expiration, order a duplicate online through the MVC website. Report stolen documents to police first. The replacement is mailed. Non-Citizen Renewals

Lawful permanent residents can hold a New Jersey REAL ID. A Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551) with an expiration date is a four-point primary document. The same card without an expiration date counts for only two points, so you’ll need stronger secondary documents to reach six.5New Jersey Administrative Code. Other eligible non-citizens can present an unexpired foreign passport with a valid I-94 (four points) or a current employment authorization card (three points). If You Already Have a Passport

A valid U.S. passport or passport card gets you through a TSA checkpoint on its own, as do a Department of Defense ID, a DHS trusted traveler card such as Global Entry or NEXUS, and a state-issued Enhanced Driver’s License. Children under 18 don’t need their own ID when flying with an adult.14Transportation Security Administration.
