To run an NJ RN license verification, use the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs portal at newjersey.mylicense.com/verification. It’s free, needs no login, and returns the nurse’s name, license number, license type, and current status in real time. That status field is the whole point of the search: it tells you whether the nurse can legally practice today.
Running the Search
On the landing page, choose “Person Search” for an individual nurse. You can search by name or by license number. A license number gets you an exact match fastest, but a name search works fine if that’s all you have. The system pulls from the Board of Nursing’s live licensing database, so what you see reflects the current record.
“Business Search” is the other option on the same page, used for entity lookups rather than individual nurses.
What the Status Field Means
The status determines whether the nurse is authorized to practice in New Jersey.
- Active. The nurse has met renewal and continuing education requirements and can practice.
- Expired. The renewal deadline passed. Under N.J.A.C. 13:37-7.7, a license not renewed within 30 days of expiration is automatically suspended, and practicing after that point counts as unlicensed practice.
- Suspended. The nurse cannot practice, whether from an automatic suspension for non-renewal or a disciplinary action.
- Revoked or Surrendered. The license is gone. A surrender typically happens voluntarily during an investigation or settlement; a revocation follows formal disciplinary proceedings.
Anyone working as a nurse while suspended or revoked is engaged in unlicensed practice, which carries penalties beyond whatever triggered the status change.
Employer Verification Duties
New Jersey healthcare employers are required, not merely encouraged, to verify nurse licenses. The Division of Consumer Affairs directs employers to confirm that every nurse’s license is current and valid before hiring and throughout employment. Verification must be performed annually for all nursing employees, and the facility has to keep a secured record showing the license number, the date verified, and who did the check.
A lapsed license among your nursing staff creates liability for the facility, not only the individual. Because the portal is free and instant, an annual sweep is straightforward to document.
When the Nurse Holds a Multistate Compact License
New Jersey is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact. A nurse practicing in New Jersey under a multistate license issued by another compact state won’t appear in the NJ portal as a New Jersey licensee, because the license was issued elsewhere. That license is still valid for practice here.
For those searches, use Nursys QuickConfirm at nursys.com. It’s a free tool that pulls license and discipline status from any participating board and produces a downloadable verification report. If your first search on the NJ portal returns nothing and the nurse says they hold a compact license from another state, QuickConfirm is where to look next.
Verifying an NJ License for Another State (Endorsement)
If you’re the nurse and you need your New Jersey credentials sent to another state’s board of nursing so you can be licensed there, that’s a different tool. Use Nursys, the only national database for nurse licensure verification. The New Jersey Board of Nursing feeds its data directly into Nursys, so the report functions as a primary-source verification.
At nursys.com, choose the option to request verification for endorsement, select the destination jurisdiction, agree to the terms allowing your data to be shared, and pay. The fee is $30 per license type per destination. Holding both an RN and an LPN license and verifying both to one state costs $60. Within a license type, the $30 covers all licenses you hold across participating boards.
Once payment clears, the report is available to the receiving board immediately. How quickly that board acts on it is up to their own processing timeline, but nothing on the New Jersey side needs to catch up.
Two limits to know. Nursys only covers RN and LPN/VN licenses; advanced practice credentials such as CNP, CNS, CNM, or CRNA aren’t in the system, and you have to contact the New Jersey Board directly to send those. And if the destination state doesn’t participate in Nursys, you’ll follow that state’s own verification procedure instead.
Upgrading a New Jersey License to Multistate
Current New Jersey licensees who want a multistate compact license apply through the Division of Consumer Affairs online portal. Eligibility includes an active, unencumbered NJ nursing license, a passing NCLEX result, fingerprint-based state and federal criminal background checks, no felony convictions, and a valid Social Security number.
When To Contact the Board Directly
Some verification questions can’t be answered through the portal or Nursys. Call the New Jersey Board of Nursing at (973) 504-6430 if you need verification of an advanced practice credential, if the license in question expired before 1985 and isn’t in Nursys, or if you’re trying to resolve a discrepancy in your own record.
