To apply for the NJ Transit reduced fare discount based on a disability, complete pages two through four of the Reduced Fare application, have a licensed physician or other healthcare professional certify your disability, and submit the form with a recent photo and supporting documents online at reducedfare.njtransit.com or by mail to the Reduced Fare Program office in Newark. Approved cards arrive in about four weeks and cut at least 50 percent off regular one-way fares on every NJ Transit bus, train, and light rail line, at any hour.1NJ TRANSIT. Reduced Fare Program
Check Whether You Actually Need To Apply
If you have a Medicare card, you don’t need the Reduced Fare ID at all. Show the Medicare card to the bus operator, light rail operator, or train conductor along with your fare, and the discount applies immediately.1NJ TRANSIT. Reduced Fare Program
The formal application is aimed at people with disabilities who don’t carry a Medicare card. If that’s you, the rest of this guide walks through the process.
Who Qualifies as Disabled
The program covers physical, mental, or developmental conditions that substantially limit daily functioning. A licensed physician or other licensed healthcare professional must certify the disability on the application itself; you can’t self-certify.2Cornell Law Institute. Complete the Application
Fill in your own section first with your name, address, phone number, and other personal information. Then take the form to a licensed physician or other licensed healthcare professional, who completes the medical certification section describing the nature of the disability and confirming that it substantially limits daily functioning.2Cornell Law Institute. If you need a personal care attendant when traveling, ask the physician to certify that too. Your card will be stamped to allow a companion to ride free, and the companion won’t need a separate card. This has to be certified up front, so raise it during the appointment rather than after.1NJ TRANSIT. Reduced Fare Program
Include a Photo (Required as of January 1, 2026)
NJ Transit no longer accepts Reduced Fare ID cards without a photo. Every new card issued includes a recent photograph and is valid for four years. Upload a photo through the online portal, or include a printed one with a mailed application. Older non-photo cards are no longer honored, so anyone still holding one needs to apply for a replacement photo ID before their next trip.1NJ TRANSIT. Reduced Fare Program
Submit the Application
Online submissions go through reducedfare.njtransit.com. If you’re mailing the packet, send the completed application, your photo, and copies of any supporting documents to:

Your certifying physician or agency can also return the completed form directly. Send copies rather than originals, and check that every field is filled in before it goes out. Missing information is the most common reason applications stall.
After You Apply
Approved applicants receive a personalized Reduced Fare photo ID card in the mail in about four weeks.4State of New Jersey. Public Transit and Air Travel The card shows your name, photo, a unique identification number, and an expiration date. There’s no online tracking system, so watch the mail rather than calling for status updates.
The card is valid for four years. NJ Transit will notify you before it expires so you can submit a new application and photo. Once a card lapses, you lose the discount until a replacement is issued, so start the renewal as soon as the notice arrives.1NJ TRANSIT. Reduced Fare Program
