You can check your NJ unemployment claim status online through the Division of Unemployment Insurance portal or by calling your assigned regional phone number. The portal shows whether your claim is pending, filed, not payable, monetarily ineligible, or exhausted, along with your weekly benefit rate and the date of your last payment. What that status means, and what you should do next, depends on which label you see.
Checking Your Status Online
Go to the Division of Unemployment Insurance page and click the “Check Claim Status” link listed under the options for people who have already filed.1New Jersey Department of Labor & Workforce Development. Once you’re verified, the system shows your current status, your weekly benefit rate, and your last payment date.
First-time users have to create an NJ.gov account with the same email address used on the application, and set a password during registration.2Division of Unemployment Insurance. Checking Your Status by Phone
If you can’t get in online, you can check status and certify by phone. New Jersey assigns you a regional call center number based on where you live, and the first time you call, you’ll enter your Social Security number and set a four-digit PIN you’ll reuse on future calls.3Division of Unemployment Insurance. What Each Claim Status Means

- Not Payable. Something is blocking your benefits. The state may need more information, you may have missed a weekly certification, or you have an eligibility appointment scheduled. - Monetarily Ineligible. You didn’t earn enough in your base period. For claims filed in 2026, you need at least $310 per week for 20 or more weeks in covered employment, or total base-year earnings of at least $15,500.6Division of Unemployment Insurance. Who Is Eligible for Benefits

The weekly benefit rate you see on your account is 60% of your average weekly wage from your base period, capped at $905 per week for 2026.8Division of Unemployment Insurance. Why Your Claim Sits in Pending or Not Payable
The most common reason a claim stalls is adjudication, which usually involves conflicting information about why you left your last job. New Jersey handles most adjudications online through a system called e-Adjudication. You’ll get an email with a secure link to a questionnaire, and you have up to 12 days to answer. If you’d rather talk to someone, call the call center before the online form expires and ask for a phone hearing with a claims examiner. For separation issues, your former employer is notified and can take part. Keep Certifying While Your Status Is Unresolved
Your status can look stuck for weeks. Certify anyway. You must certify for benefits every single week you’re unemployed, even if there’s a problem with your claim or you’re waiting on an appeal. If you skip a week and are later found eligible, you will not be paid for the weeks you didn’t certify.3Division of Unemployment Insurance. Certification is open online or by phone Sunday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.13Division of Unemployment Insurance. If Your Status Shows a Denial
You have 21 calendar days from the mailing date of the determination to file an appeal. Miss that window and the denial stands.15Division of Unemployment Insurance. About the Appeal Tribunal Appeals are filed online through the Division of Unemployment Insurance website. After you submit, you should see a confirmation page and get a confirmation email. Your appeal goes to the Appeal Tribunal, where an examiner holds a hearing and issues a decision. You can represent yourself or bring an attorney. If you lose at that level, you can appeal again to the Board of Review within 20 days of the Tribunal’s decision.17Division of Unemployment Insurance. Have Your Claimant ID Ready
Some inquiries, especially PIN resets and account problems, require your Claimant ID. That number appears on written notices the state mails you, including the “Unemployment Insurance Instructions & Appointment Notice” and the “Unemployment Insurance Appointment Notice.”18State of New Jersey.
