North Bend Sales Tax: Rate, Exemptions, and Filing Penalties

The North Bend sales tax rate is 9.2% as of early 2026. That total combines Washington’s 6.5% state retail sales tax1Washington State Legislature. RCW 82.08.020 – Tax Imposed – Retail Sales – Retail Car Rental with a 2.7% local rate that funds city services, King County programs, and transportation projects.2Washington State Department of Revenue. Local Sales and Use Tax Rates Listed by City – January 1 Through March 31, 2026 You’ll see one combined charge on your receipt whether the purchase happens in a storefront on North Bend Way or ships to a North Bend address from an online retailer.

Part of the local portion is a voter-approved 0.2% sales and use tax dedicated to the North Bend Transportation Benefit District No. 1, renewed in November 2021 for another ten years.3City of North Bend. Transportation Benefit District Board Local rates can shift when districts expire or voters approve new measures, so if you’re pricing a large purchase or setting up checkout for a business, confirm the current rate through the Department of Revenue’s rate lookup before relying on it.

What the 9.2% Applies To

Retail sales tax covers most tangible goods sold in North Bend: electronics, furniture, clothing, appliances, building materials, and the like. Washington also taxes digital products, which pulls in downloaded music, e-books, and streaming subscriptions at the same rate.

Services get taxed more selectively, but the list is longer than many people expect. Residential construction labor, landscaping, automotive repair, janitorial work, and installation of new fixtures all carry sales tax. So do gym memberships and golf course fees. The 9.2% applies whether the transaction happens in person or arrives through a remote sale delivered to a North Bend address.

What’s Exempt

A few significant categories fall outside sales tax entirely.

Groceries sold for home consumption are exempt. That means produce, dairy, meat, bread, and similar staples ring up tax-free under RCW 82.08.0293. The exemption does not reach prepared food, soft drinks, bottled water, dietary supplements, or anything sold through a vending machine.4Washington State Legislature. RCW 82.08.0293 – Exemptions – Sales of Food and Food Ingredients A rotisserie chicken from the deli counter is taxed; the raw chicken next to it is not.

Prescription drugs are exempt, along with insulin, prosthetic devices, kidney dialysis equipment, nebulizers, and ostomic items.5Washington State Legislature. RCW 82.08.0281 – Exemptions – Sales of Prescription Drugs Over-the-counter medicines don’t qualify.

Professional services sit outside retail sales tax. Fees paid to attorneys, physicians, and accountants aren’t taxed, and personal services like haircuts and dry cleaning aren’t either. Providers still owe other state business taxes, but they don’t add 9.2% to your bill.

Online and Out-of-State Purchases

Most major online retailers already collect North Bend’s 9.2% at checkout. Washington requires out-of-state sellers to collect and remit sales tax once they exceed $100,000 in gross receipts from Washington customers in the current or prior calendar year, counting both taxable and exempt sales as well as sales made through marketplace facilitators.6Washington Department of Revenue. When tax isn’t collected at the point of sale, you still owe it. Washington’s use tax applies at the same 9.2% rate to goods purchased without Washington sales tax and then used in North Bend.7Washington Department of Revenue. Use Tax The most common triggers are purchases from smaller out-of-state sellers that don’t collect, private-party sales like furniture bought through a classified ad, and items ordered from vendors not required to register in Washington. Use tax is calculated on the purchase price including shipping. If you already paid another state’s sales tax on the item, Washington credits that amount against what you owe here.

Businesses report use tax on their regular excise returns. Individuals can report directly to the Department of Revenue, and while small purchases often go unreported in practice, the Department can assess use tax during an audit going back several years.

Lodging Carries an Extra 1%

If you’re paying for a hotel, motel, bed-and-breakfast, or RV park in North Bend, the bill carries an additional 1% lodging excise tax on top of the 9.2% sales tax.8City of North Bend. Taxes, Rates and Fees Schedule The lodging tax applies to any accommodation already subject to retail sales tax under state law. Operators collecting it should factor the extra charge into both pricing and reporting.

Filing If You Collect Sales Tax

Every business collecting sales tax in North Bend needs a Unified Business Identifier, the nine-digit number assigned when you register for a Washington business license.9Washington Department of Revenue. Apply for a Business License Returns are filed through the My DOR portal using Secure Access Washington credentials. You enter sales broken down by location code, the system calculates tax owed, and you authorize payment electronically.10Washington State Department of Revenue. The Department of Revenue assigns a filing frequency based on your tax volume. Low-volume businesses may file annually or quarterly; higher-volume businesses file monthly. Your schedule and the specific 2026 due dates appear in your My DOR account.11Washington Department of Revenue. 2026 Excise Tax Return Due Dates

Late Filing Penalties

Missing a deadline triggers an escalating penalty:

  • 9% if the tax isn’t paid by the due date
  • 19% total if still unpaid at the end of the following month
  • 29% total if still unpaid at the end of the second month after the due date

The minimum penalty is $5. Interest also accrues, set at 6% for calendar year 2026.12Washington Department of Revenue. Interest Rate Tables Separate penalties apply to businesses operating without registering (5% on all tax owed for the unregistered period), collection by warrant (an additional 10%), and intentional evasion (50%).

Waivers are limited. The Department may waive a penalty when the late filing resulted from circumstances genuinely beyond your control, and it states plainly that cash flow problems, not knowing taxes were due, and not receiving a return in the mail don’t qualify.13Washington Department of Revenue. Penalty Waivers A separate option: if you filed and paid every return on time for the preceding 24 months, the Department may waive one penalty within that window regardless of the reason. Either way, the burden is on you to make the case.
