North Canton Income Tax: New Rate, Who Must File, and Deadlines

The North Canton income tax rate is 2.0% as of January 1, 2026, up from 1.5% in prior years after voters approved Issue 4 in May 2025.1North Canton, OH. May 2025 Income Tax Issue Every resident aged 18 and older has to file an annual return with the Regional Income Tax Agency (RITA), whether or not any tax is owed. The tax applies to wages, business profits, and other earned income for both residents and non-residents who work inside city limits.

What the New Rate Means for Your Bill

At 2.0%, you owe $20 in city tax for every $1,000 of taxable income. On a $50,000 income, that’s $1,000 a year, compared to $750 under the old 1.5% rate. The rate applies to every dollar of taxable income; there is no bracket structure and no standard deduction at the municipal level.

What Income Is Taxed

The 2.0% rate applies to qualifying wages, salaries, commissions, bonuses, and other work-based compensation. Net profits from a business you run or rental property you own in North Canton are also taxable. The city follows the definition of qualifying wages in Ohio Revised Code 718.01.2Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code Section 718.01

Several common income sources are not taxed. Social Security benefits, pensions, and unemployment compensation are exempt.3North Canton, OH. City Income Tax State law also exempts military pay, interest, and dividends, and capital gains are generally excluded. If you’re retired and living on Social Security and pension income, you likely owe nothing, though you still have a filing obligation unless you request the permanent exemption described below.

Credit for Taxes Paid to Another City

If you live in North Canton but work in another Ohio city with its own income tax, North Canton gives you a credit for the tax you paid to that work city. The credit is capped at 1.5% of the income taxed there.3North Canton, OH. City Income Tax The cap stayed at 1.5% when the city’s own rate rose to 2.0%.4Regional Income Tax Agency. Tax Rates Table

Here’s what that looks like in practice. Say your employer is in a city with a 2.0% rate and withholds the full 2.0% there. North Canton credits you for only 1.5% of that income, so you still owe North Canton 0.5%. This is the gap many commuting residents will notice for the first time in 2026. Under the old 1.5% rate, a full credit from the other city erased the North Canton bill. Now, almost anyone who works outside the city will owe something back home.

If your work city’s rate is below 1.5%, the credit equals that city’s rate, and you owe North Canton the difference up to 2.0%. Ohio law lets municipalities set their own credit amount by ordinance, and North Canton is not required to match its own rate.5Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Who Must File

Every North Canton resident 18 and older must file an annual municipal return, even if the employer withheld all the tax and even if no tax is owed. Non-residents who earned income working in North Canton file for that income. Businesses operating in the city report net profits the same way.

If you had no taxable income for the year but don’t qualify for the retiree exemption, you still file an exemption form and attach page 1 of your federal Form 1040 as proof.6Regional Income Tax Agency. Do I Need To File

Permanent Exemption for Retirees

Retired residents with no taxable municipal income can stop filing after one more submission. In the first year your retirement applies, file an exemption form with RITA that includes your retirement date. Once it’s processed, no further returns or exemption forms are required in future years.6Regional Income Tax Agency. Do I Need To File If you later start earning taxable income again, the filing obligation returns with it.

Filing Deadline and Estimated Payments

The annual return is due April 15 following the end of the tax year. For 2026 income, the deadline is April 15, 2027. You can request an extension to file using RITA Form 32 EST-EXT, but an extension to file is not an extension to pay. Interest runs on any unpaid tax from the original April 15 due date.7Regional Income Tax Agency. Individuals – Form And Instructions

If you expect to owe $200 or more after credits and withholding, make quarterly estimated payments through the year.8Regional Income Tax Agency. Estimated Tax Payments This applies most often to self-employed residents, landlords, and anyone with income that isn’t subject to employer withholding. The 2026 quarterly due dates are April 15, 2026; June 15, 2026; September 15, 2026; and January 15, 2027. Payments use RITA Form 32 EST-EXT.9Regional Income Tax Agency. Filing Due Dates

The 0.5% rate increase makes quarterly payments relevant for people who never needed them before. Residents whose North Canton obligation used to be fully covered by withholding from a work city may now owe the 0.5% gap and should plan for it.
