What Makes Up the 6.50%
Three separate taxes stack to reach the rate on your receipt:
- Ohio state sales tax of 5.75%, set by state law and the same in all 88 counties.2Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Code 5739.02 – Levy of Sales Tax – Purpose – Rate – Exemptions
- Stark County permissive tax of 0.50%, which goes to the county general fund.
- Transit authority tax of 0.25%, collected for SARTA.
Some rate lookup tools combine the two local pieces into a single 0.75% “county” figure. The two are authorized under different statutes and fund different budgets, which matters if you’re comparing North Canton to a county without a transit levy.1Ohio Department of Taxation.
