The North Carolina bar exam is the Uniform Bar Examination, given twice a year by the Board of Law Examiners of the State of North Carolina, and you need a scaled score of at least 270 out of 400 to pass. North Carolina does not add a state-specific component on top of the UBE, so your preparation and the test itself are the same material used in every other UBE jurisdiction.
Exam Dates and Application Deadlines
The exam is administered on the last Tuesday and Wednesday of February and July. The July 2026 exam falls on July 28 and 29, and February 2026 follows the same last-Tuesday-and-Wednesday pattern.1North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. Current Bar Examination Dates and Locations
Applications go through the Board’s online portal, and the filing windows are strict. For February 2026, non-licensed applicants file on time between August 11 and October 7, 2025, with a late window closing November 4, 2025. For July 2026, the timely window runs from November 10, 2025, through January 6, 2026, with a late deadline of March 3, 2026.2North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. North Carolina Board of Law Examiners – General Application Deadlines
Fees vary by applicant status:
- Non-licensed, first-time takers: $850 timely, $1,100 late
- Licensed attorneys: $1,650 timely, $1,900 late
- Repeat takers: $400
Late filing adds $250 and buys nothing, so hitting the regular deadline is worth the effort.
Documents You’ll Need to Submit
Alongside the application itself, the Board requires certificates of moral character from four people who know you personally, two sets of fingerprints, transcripts from every undergraduate and graduate school you attended, a certified birth certificate, two signed authorization and release forms, good standing certificates from every jurisdiction where you hold or have held a license, and copies of any legal proceedings in which you were a party.
The application form itself asks for detailed disclosures covering family history, residences, employment, military service, credit, substance use, mental health, and any criminal, civil, or disciplinary involvement.3North Carolina Administrative Code. 27 NCAC 03 .0402 – Application Form An incomplete application stalls the entire timeline, and an omission found later during the character investigation is harder to fix than the underlying issue would have been to disclose.
What’s on the Exam
North Carolina adopted the UBE starting with the February 2019 administration. All three components are developed by the National Conference of Bar Examiners.4North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. Information for Bar Exam Application
Multistate Bar Examination
The MBE is a 200-question multiple-choice test spread across a full day, covering civil procedure, constitutional law, contracts, criminal law and procedure, evidence, real property, and torts. Each question presents a fact pattern with four answer choices. The MBE accounts for half of your total UBE score.
Multistate Essay Examination
The MEE is six essay questions at 30 minutes each. You read a fact pattern, identify the issues, and write a structured analysis. Subjects overlap with MBE topics and extend into areas like business associations, family law, trusts, and conflict of laws. Graders reward clear legal reasoning over polished prose.
Multistate Performance Test
The MPT gives you two 90-minute tasks that mimic real legal work: drafting a memo, a brief, or a client letter from a file of documents and a mini-library of law provided with the test. It doesn’t test knowledge of any particular subject. It measures whether you can produce competent work product under time pressure using unfamiliar materials.
The MPRE
Every applicant must also pass the Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination with a scaled score of at least 80.4North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. Information for Bar Exam Application The MPRE is a separate test on legal ethics, given three times a year by the National Conference of Bar Examiners.5North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. MPRE Your passing score must be within the 24 months immediately before the bar exam you’re taking. Most applicants take it during their final year of law school, which keeps the timing comfortable.
Character and Fitness Review
Once your file is complete, the Board begins a character and fitness investigation. Investigators contact former employers, personal references, and the institutions you listed to verify your disclosures. Every applicant also sits for a personal interview with a member of a district Bar Candidate Committee, whether you’re a first-time applicant or an attorney moving in from another state.
Interviews run roughly 30 minutes and are conducted by video. The interviewer reviews your application and assesses honesty, trustworthiness, respect for the law, and the emotional stability to practice. North Carolina residents are usually assigned to the judicial district where they live, and non-residents who didn’t attend a North Carolina law school are often routed to a designated district.
Candor pays off here. Applicants who fully disclosed a past issue and can explain what they learned from it generally fare better than those who minimized or omitted something the Board later found on its own.
Who Is Eligible
You need a Juris Doctor or LL.B. from a law school that held American Bar Association approval when your degree was conferred. North Carolina also recognizes degrees from law schools approved for licensure in another state, provided you were actually licensed in that state.6North Carolina Administrative Code. 27 NCAC 01C .0105 – Approval of Law Schools
If you’re already licensed in another state, you may be able to skip the exam entirely through comity rather than sitting for the bar. The Board maintains a list of reciprocal jurisdictions, and the home state must also admit North Carolina attorneys without requiring an exam.7North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. States With Which North Carolina Has Comity Comity applicants still go through the full character review and the same MPRE requirement.
Laptop Registration
If you want to type your essays rather than handwrite them, you have to register separately for ExamSoft’s Examplify software and pay a $125 laptop fee. For the February 2026 exam, registration runs from December 9, 2025, through January 6, 2026, and that deadline is a hard receipt date, not a postmark date. The fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. You also have to complete two mock exams through the software before the deadline to confirm your laptop is compatible.8North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. ExamSoft Instructions
Testing Accommodations
If a disability requires modified testing conditions, you can petition the Board. The petition and all supporting documentation are due by the same application deadline that applies to your exam sitting. Every petitioner files the Petition for Special Accommodations and a Statement of Law School Official, and additional medical or psychological documentation depends on the disability. Most reports must be dated within the last three years, so if your evaluation is older than that, plan on a current one before you file.9North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. Passing Score, Results, and Retakes
A total scaled score of 270 out of 400 passes. That number combines your performance on the MBE, MEE, and MPT.10North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. Understanding Your Examination Score Results are typically released about five weeks after the exam, posted to your applicant portal, and published as a list of successful candidates on the Board’s website.
There is no regrading of UBE scores. If you fall short, your only option is to retake. North Carolina sets no cap on the number of attempts, and the retake fee is $400.11National Conference of Bar Examiners. North Carolina
Transferring a UBE Score Into or Out of North Carolina
A UBE score earned in another state can be used to apply for North Carolina admission as long as the exam was taken within the prior three years, which is North Carolina’s score age limit. A score earned in North Carolina can likewise transfer to another UBE jurisdiction within that state’s own time window.12National Conference of Bar Examiners. UBE Maximum Score Age Transferring a score doesn’t exempt you from the receiving state’s character review, MPRE requirement, or any other admission prerequisites. It just means you don’t sit for the exam again.
From Passing the Exam to Practicing Law
Passing the exam doesn’t make you a North Carolina lawyer. You have to wait for the Board to issue your physical license, which is ordered shortly after results go out and typically arrives within four to six weeks.13North Carolina Board of Law Examiners. Swearing-In Information Once you have the license, you take the attorney’s oath as required by state law. Many local bar associations organize group swearing-in ceremonies, so check with the association in the county where you plan to practice. Until the oath is complete, you cannot practice or hold yourself out as a North Carolina attorney.
