North Carolina Class C License: Requirements, Tests, and Fees

To get a North Carolina Class C driver’s license, you need to be at least 18 (or work through the graduated licensing system starting at 15), show identity, Social Security, and North Carolina residency documents at an NCDMV office, pass a written knowledge test, a vision screening, and a road test, and pay $6.50 for each year the license will be valid.1North Carolina General Assembly. What a Class C License Lets You Drive

A Class C license covers any noncommercial single vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating under 26,001 pounds. That takes in cars, SUVs, pickups, and most vans. You can pull a trailer as long as the combined GVWR of the vehicle and trailer stays under 26,001 pounds.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina General Statutes 20-7 – Issuance and Renewal of Drivers Licenses

Class C does not cover heavier vehicles (those need a Class A or B), and it does not cover vehicles designed for 16 or more passengers or those carrying hazardous materials, which require a commercial driver’s license regardless of weight.

Documents to Bring to the DMV

Applicants must produce at least two forms of identification, proof of a Social Security number, and documents establishing North Carolina residency.1North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina General Statutes 20-7 – Issuance and Renewal of Drivers Licenses Residency can be shown with a utility bill listing your address, a signed lease or mortgage, or a pay stub with your name and address on it.

If you cannot produce standard residency documents, a parent or legal guardian, or the applicant if 18 or older, can sign a sworn affidavit at the DMV office attesting to the current address.

Applicants under 18 also need a parent or legal guardian to sign the application, accepting responsibility for the minor’s driving conduct.

The Three Tests

The examination has three parts. The written knowledge test covers traffic laws, road signs, and safe driving practices. The vision screening confirms you can see well enough to drive safely. The road test puts you behind the wheel to demonstrate that you can actually operate a vehicle.1North Carolina General Assembly. Fees and How Long the License Lasts

Since July 1, 2024, the fee for a regular Class C license is $6.50 per year of the license’s duration.2NCDOT. 2024 DMV Quadrennial Fee Adjustment A standard license runs eight years for drivers 18 through 65, so you’ll pay $52 up front. Drivers 66 and older get a five-year license and pay $32.50. The same per-year rate applies to renewals.

Learner permits and provisional licenses each carry their own separate fees, and a duplicate or replacement license costs extra if your card is lost, stolen, or damaged.

Standard License or REAL ID

Since May 7, 2025, federal agencies including TSA no longer accept standard driver’s licenses that aren’t REAL ID compliant for boarding domestic flights or entering certain federal facilities.3Transportation Security Administration. TSA Publishes Final Rule on REAL ID Enforcement Beginning May 7, 2025 North Carolina issues both versions of the Class C license, and you have to specifically ask for the REAL ID version at the counter. A REAL ID has a gold star in the upper right corner.

To get the starred license, you need more documentation than a standard license requires: proof of your Social Security number in the form of an original Social Security card, W-2, or 1099 showing your full SSN, plus proof of lawful status in the United States such as a U.S. birth certificate or valid passport.4Official NCDMV. N.C. REAL ID Requirements If you already hold a Class C license without the star and want to upgrade, you have to visit a DMV office in person with those documents.

Travelers arriving at airport checkpoints without a compliant license aren’t automatically turned away. Starting February 1, 2026, TSA offers a $45 identity verification option called ConfirmID, though it adds time to the process and isn’t guaranteed to succeed.5Transportation Security Administration. If You’re Under 18: The Graduated Path

North Carolina phases in driving privileges for teens through a three-level system that runs at least 15 months from start to finish. Every level after the first requires a clean six-month record on moving violations and seat belt infractions before you can advance.

Level 1: Limited Learner Permit

You can apply at age 15 once you’ve completed an approved driver education course, which includes 30 hours of classroom instruction and at least 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training. You’ll also need a Driving Eligibility Certificate from your school and must pass the written knowledge test.6North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. Get a Level 1 Limited Learner Permit

Driving is only allowed with a supervising driver in the front passenger seat — a parent, legal guardian, grandparent, or another adult approved by your parent or guardian, who has held a license for at least five years. For the first six months of the permit, driving is limited to the hours between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. Using a mobile phone or other electronic device while driving is prohibited at this level.7North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina General Statutes 20-11 – Issuance of Limited Learners Permit and Provisional Drivers License to Person Who Is Less Than 18 Years Old

Level 2: Limited Provisional License

After nine months on the learner permit, and with no moving violations or seat belt infractions in the previous six months, you can apply for a limited provisional license. You’ll take the road test at this stage. The license allows unsupervised driving between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m.; outside those hours you still need a supervising driver.7North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina General Statutes 20-11 – Issuance of Limited Learners Permit and Provisional Drivers License to Person Who Is Less Than 18 Years Old

Level 3: Full Provisional License

After six months at Level 2, again with a clean record over the preceding six months, you can move up to a full provisional license, which lifts the nighttime restrictions. It expires 60 days after your 21st birthday, at which point it converts to a regular adult Class C license.1North Carolina General Assembly. Renewing Your Class C License

NCDMV mails a renewal notice roughly 60 days before your license expires, but tracking the date is your responsibility. Renewal costs the same $6.50 per year, and you’ll need to pass a vision screening.2NCDOT. 2024 DMV Quadrennial Fee Adjustment

Many drivers can renew online. Standard non-REAL ID licenses can be renewed online two consecutive times before an in-person visit is required. REAL ID licenses can also be renewed online a second consecutive time, but only if you’ve had an in-person transaction with a new photo taken since your last renewal. Online renewal is closed off if your license is suspended, you have outstanding debt with NCDMV, you hold a commercial license, or your license carries restrictions beyond corrective lenses.8Official NCDMV.
