If you’ve moved within North Carolina, you have 60 days to update your address with the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles.1North Carolina General Assembly. There is no fee for the address change itself; you only pay if you order a duplicate license or registration card showing the new address.
The 60-Day Deadline

Miss the window and it’s an infraction under N.C. Gen. Stat. § 20-35. That’s not a criminal charge, but it can produce a court penalty if you’re cited during a traffic stop.3North Carolina General Assembly. North Carolina Code 20-35 – Penalties for Violating Article The practical cost is often worse: renewal notices and DMV mail keep going to your old address, and missed deadlines pile up from there.
Change Your Address Online Through MyDMV
The fastest option is the MyDMV portal, the DMV’s online service center for managing your license and registration.4North Carolina Department of Transportation. Have your driver license number, your old address, and your new residential and mailing addresses ready before you log in. The address change on your driving record takes effect once the submission goes through. If you want a physical card showing the new address, you can order a duplicate during checkout.
Change Your Address by Mail With Form MVR-24A
Download Form MVR-24A, the “Notice of Change of Address,” from the NCDOT website. It asks for your driver license number, your previous address, and your new residential and mailing addresses. It does not ask for your Social Security Number. If you also want to update vehicle registrations at the same time, the form has fields for each vehicle’s year, make, body style, VIN, plate number, title number, and registered owner.6North Carolina Department of Transportation. Mail is slower than the online route. If your 60-day deadline is close, submit online so you get confirmation right away.
Change Your Address in Person
You can also walk into any NC driver license office and submit the update at the counter. Bring your current license or ID so staff can pull up your record. This route makes sense if you already need to be there for something else, like renewing an expired license or getting a REAL ID-compliant card for the first time.
Update Your Vehicle Registration Separately
Changing the address on your driver license does not automatically change it on your vehicle registrations. Each vehicle you own has to be updated on its own.5N.C. Department of Transportation. On paper, add the vehicle information to the same MVR-24A form you mail in for your license.6North Carolina Department of Transportation. USPS and the DMV don’t share that data.
Getting a New License Card
Filing the change updates your record, but the DMV does not automatically send you a new card. If you want a physical license showing the new address, order a duplicate. Update Your Voter Registration at the Same Time
Existing NCDMV customers can update their voter registration address and party affiliation through the DMV’s online voter registration application while handling the address change.9NCSBE.gov. Updating Registration If you skip it during the DMV transaction, you can still update your registration separately through the State Board of Elections, but doing both at once saves a step.
