North Las Vegas Sales Tax Rate: 8.375% Breakdown and Exemptions

The sales tax rate in North Las Vegas, Nevada is 8.375%. That rate applies to most retail purchases of physical goods made within city limits and matches what you’ll pay anywhere else in Clark County, including Las Vegas and Henderson. North Las Vegas does not add a separate city tax on top of the state and county layers.

How the 8.375% Breaks Down

The combined rate stacks two groups of taxes: a statewide base of 6.85% that applies everywhere in Nevada, plus 1.525% in Clark County add-ons that fund regional needs.1Nevada Department of Taxation. Components of Sales and Use Tax Rates

The 6.85% state portion is made up of four pieces set by Nevada statute:

  • 2.00% state sales tax (NRS 372)
  • 2.60% Local School Support Tax (NRS 374)
  • 0.50% Basic City-County Relief Tax (NRS 377)
  • 1.75% Supplemental City-County Relief Tax (NRS 377)

The 1.525% Clark County portion funds flood control, regional transportation, the Southern Nevada Water Authority, police support, and a state education contribution. Because the county layer is set at the county level, the total rate in North Las Vegas differs from Washoe County or rural parts of Nevada.

The tax follows the location of the sale, not the buyer. A visitor from out of state shopping at a store in North Las Vegas pays the same 8.375% a local resident does.

What Is Taxed

Nevada sales tax applies to tangible personal property, meaning physical items you can see, touch, or weigh. Clothing, electronics, furniture, appliances, and household goods bought at a store in North Las Vegas have the 8.375% added at the register.2Justia. Nevada Code Chapter 372 – Sales and Use Taxes

Most standalone services are not subject to sales tax. Hiring a plumber, getting a haircut, or paying a lawyer does not trigger the tax. When a service is bundled with the sale of a physical product, the service portion can become part of the taxable sales price; installation labor billed separately from the product is generally excluded.3Nevada Legislature. Purely digital products currently fall outside the tax because they are not tangible personal property. E-books, downloaded software, streaming subscriptions, and in-app purchases are not taxed under existing law. The Nevada Legislature considered Assembly Bill 453 in 2025, which would have extended sales tax to digital goods like streaming services and downloaded media.4Nevada Legislature. What Is Exempt

Several categories are carved out by statute, and the exemption applies automatically at checkout.

Groceries

Unprepared food for home consumption is exempt under NRS 372.284. Produce, meat, bread, and canned goods are not taxed. The exemption does not cover prepared food meant for immediate consumption, alcoholic beverages, pet food, or vitamins and supplements.5Nevada Legislature. Nevada Code 372-284 – Food for Human Consumption A rotisserie chicken from the deli counter is taxable; a raw chicken from the meat aisle is not.

Prescription Medicine and Medical Devices

Prescription medicines dispensed by a pharmacist or furnished by a licensed physician, dentist, or hospital are exempt under NRS 372.283, along with prosthetic devices, orthotic appliances, ostomy supplies, hemodialysis products, and feminine hygiene products. Over-the-counter medications that do not require a prescription remain taxable.

Sales to Government

Sales to the federal government, the State of Nevada, and any Nevada city, county, or political subdivision are exempt under NRS 372.325.

Vehicle Purchases

Buying a car in North Las Vegas is taxed at the same 8.375%, based on where the sale takes place. The dealership collects the tax and sends it to the Nevada Department of Taxation. If you trade in a vehicle, the trade-in value reduces the taxable price, so a $30,000 car with a $10,000 trade-in means tax is calculated on $20,000. That credit applies regardless of where you originally bought the trade-in.6Nevada Department of Taxation. Automobile Industry

A couple of limits are worth knowing. The trade-in credit cannot exceed the selling price of the new vehicle, so a trade worth more than the car you’re buying does not produce a negative tax bill. And turning in a leased vehicle rather than one you own does not count as a trade-in for sales tax purposes.

Online and Out-of-State Purchases

Use tax is the companion to sales tax. It applies when you buy physical goods from an out-of-state seller who does not collect Nevada sales tax and bring the items into North Las Vegas for your own use. The rate is the same 8.375%.

In practice, most major online retailers and marketplaces now collect Nevada sales tax at checkout. Under NRS 372.751, a marketplace facilitator must collect once its total sales into Nevada exceed $100,000, or it facilitates 200 or more separate transactions in the current or prior calendar year. The same thresholds apply to remote sellers shipping directly to Nevada customers. For a buyer in North Las Vegas, that means the 8.375% should appear on most online orders automatically.

Use tax typically comes up with smaller out-of-state vendors, private party purchases across state lines, or items bought while traveling. When it applies, the responsibility to self-report and pay falls on the buyer.7Nevada Department of Taxation.
