The document number on a New York driver’s license is an 8- or 10-character code printed on the card itself that identifies that specific physical document. It is not your 9-digit DMV ID (also called your Client ID), which identifies you as a person and never changes. Mixing these up is the single most common reason online DMV forms reject an entry.
- The DMV ID number (Client ID) is 9 digits on the front of your card. It identifies you and stays the same for life.

Where to Find It on Your Card
The location depends on when your card was issued. Cards printed after March 10, 2022, moved the document number to the back, which catches people who are used to looking at the front.
Cards Issued After March 10, 2022

Cards Issued July 2013 Through Early 2022

Older Cards
Licenses issued before July 2013 printed the number on the back, often in a less prominent spot. A card that old is well past its renewal window and needs to be replaced in person.
Reading the Number Correctly
The 8-character version is all digits. The 10-character version is a mix of uppercase letters and numbers.2New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. When You Actually Need It
The most common reason to hunt down this number is setting up a MyDMV account. Registration asks for your 9-digit DMV ID, the document number from your most recently issued card, the last four digits of your Social Security number, your date of birth, and the ZIP code the DMV has on file.3New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. One place you don’t need it: the paper Form MV-44, used to apply for a license, permit, or non-driver ID by mail, asks for your DMV ID but has no field for the document number.4New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. After a Replacement Card
When the DMV issues a replacement, you get a new document number automatically. Your Client ID and expiration date stay the same, but the old document number is voided, so a lost or stolen card won’t pass verification.5New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Replace a License or Permit
Once the new card arrives, update anywhere you’ve saved the number. A MyDMV account, for example, will need the new document number if you ever have to re-link or re-verify your identity, because the old number no longer matches DMV records.
