You can complete a NY driver’s license renewal starting one year before your license expires and up to two years after the expiration date, using one of three methods: online, by mail, or at a DMV office.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License Which method is available to you depends on the type of license you want, whether your vision exam is already on file with the DMV, and whether you need to update your photo or upgrade to a REAL ID or Enhanced Driver License.
When You Can Renew
Your renewal window opens one year before the expiration date printed on the card and stays open for two years after. The expiration date usually falls on your birthday, and if it lands on a weekend or state holiday, the license remains valid through midnight of the next business day.2New York State Senate. New York Vehicle and Traffic Law 509 – Violations
Inside the two-year post-expiration grace period, you can renew without retaking any tests. Once that window closes, your record is treated as if you never had a license. Getting back on the road means passing the written test, completing a pre-licensing course, and passing a road test, just like a first-time applicant.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License
A separate rule applies if your license was suspended or revoked. You cannot renew until the suspension period ends and any termination fee is paid. Revocations require you to request DMV approval after the revocation period ends, and you may have to retake the written and road tests. The DMV can also deny the application based on your driving record.3New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Suspensions and Revocations
Pick Your License Type First
New York issues three types of driver’s licenses, and the type you pick controls what documents you need and whether you can renew online.
A Standard license has the fewest documentation requirements. As of May 7, 2025, it no longer works as federal ID for boarding domestic flights or entering certain federal facilities, so you’d need a passport or another accepted ID to fly.4Transportation Security Administration. REAL ID
A REAL ID license is marked with a star in the upper corner and meets the federal identification standard for domestic air travel and federal facility access. It requires proof of identity such as a birth certificate or U.S. passport, your Social Security card, and two proofs of New York residency.
An Enhanced Driver License (EDL) works as both a REAL ID and a land- or sea-border-crossing document for travel between the United States, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. It requires proof of U.S. citizenship on top of the REAL ID documents, so it isn’t available to every applicant.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License
If you already hold a REAL ID or EDL and want to keep the same type, you can renew online without re-submitting your documents. Upgrading from a Standard license to a REAL ID or EDL always requires an office visit so a DMV representative can verify your original documents.
Vision Test
Every renewal requires a vision screening. The minimum standard is 20/40 acuity (Snellen method) in at least one eye, with or without corrective lenses.5New York Codes, Rules and Regulations. 15 CRR-NY 5.1 – Vision Standards Corrected vision between 20/40 and 20/70 can still qualify if the horizontal binocular field of vision is at least 140 degrees, but that requires additional review.
Two ways to satisfy the requirement. Visit an eye-care provider enrolled in the DMV Vision Registry, and the results upload directly to the DMV system. Or have any licensed medical professional complete a Vision Test Report (Form MV-619) that you submit with your renewal application.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License If you plan to renew online, using a Vision Registry provider is effectively required: the system checks for a result on file from the past 12 months.
How to Renew
Online
Online renewal is the fastest option. You qualify only if your New York license is valid or expired for less than two years, you have a vision exam from the last 12 months saved in the DMV Vision Registry, and you are not changing your license class or document type.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License Commercial driver’s license holders and drivers with Temporary Visitor status cannot renew online. When you finish, save the confirmation number and download the temporary license PDF.
By Mail
The DMV mails a renewal notice (Form MV-2) before your license expires. Complete the form, attach a Vision Test Report (MV-619) if your results are not already in the Vision Registry, and mail everything to:1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License

If no renewal notice arrived, use the Application for Permit, Driver License, or Non-Driver ID Card (Form MV-44) instead. Payment must be a check or money order payable to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles.
In Person
You must visit a DMV office if you are upgrading from a Standard license to a REAL ID or EDL, want a new photo, need to change your license class, hold a commercial license, or have Temporary Visitor status.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License Reserving an appointment online before your visit cuts the wait significantly. Bring original documents, not photocopies, for any identity or citizenship verification.
One more thing to check before you renew: if you’ve moved, update your address first. State law requires reporting a change of residence to the DMV within 10 days, and failure to do so is itself a violation under Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 509.6The State of New York. Renewal Fees
The cost depends on your license class and where you live, not your age. For the most common license type (Class D or DJ), the standard renewal fee is $64.50. Drivers who live in the Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District, which covers all five boroughs of New York City plus Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester counties, pay an additional MCTD surcharge of $16 for an eight-year license, bringing the total to $80.50.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Your Temporary License and When the Card Arrives
Once the renewal is processed, you can download and print a temporary license in PDF format. It has no photo but is legally valid for driving, and it’s good for 60 days.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License Keep it with you whenever you drive during that period.
Your permanent plastic card arrives by mail, typically within about three weeks. If it hasn’t shown up after that, you can check the mailing status online using the DMV’s tracking tool with your Transaction ID (on the temporary license or in your confirmation email) and the date you completed the transaction.7New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Penalties for Driving on an Expired License
Driving on an expired license falls under the same statute as driving without a license. Vehicle and Traffic Law Section 509 sets the general penalty at a fine between $75 and $300, up to 15 days in jail, or both.2New York State Senate. New York Vehicle and Traffic Law 509 – Violations There is one break built into the statute: if your license expired less than 60 days ago, the maximum fine drops to $40. After 60 days, the reduced penalty disappears and the standard fines and possible jail time apply.
A conviction also adds a violation to your driving record, which can affect insurance rates. The cost of a renewal is a fraction of even the minimum fine.
Optional Add-Ons at Renewal
Two extras can go on your license during the renewal itself. Veterans can add a veteran status indicator with proof of an honorable discharge or a general discharge under honorable conditions, usually a DD-214 showing that status. DD-215 or certain pre-1950 discharge forms are also accepted. You can apply in person (originals or photocopies) or by mail (photocopies only).8New York State Department of Veterans’ Services. You can also register as an organ, eye, and tissue donor while renewing online, or by completing the donation section on the MV-2 renewal notice or the MV-44 application form. Your choice is recorded in the New York State Donate Life Registry.9New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Register to Become an Organ, Eye and Tissue Donor
Commercial Driver License Renewal
CDL renewal has extra requirements that don’t apply to standard licenses. You cannot renew a CDL online; an office visit or mail-in application is required.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License Federal rules also require every CDL holder to self-certify the type of commercial driving they perform. Drivers operating in non-excepted commerce must keep a current USDOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate on file with the DMV at all times, and the exam has to be performed by a medical examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry.10New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. CDL Medical Certification Letting that certificate lapse costs you your commercial driving privileges even if the CDL itself is still valid.
Drivers with a Hazardous Materials endorsement have to provide fingerprints and pass background checks through the NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services, the FBI, and the TSA every five years.11New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Endorsement Start early. If the endorsement expires before the checks clear, the DMV may issue a provisional 90-day endorsement, but only if you already hold a current New York CDL.
