Where to Find the Document Number on Your Card

Watch for Look-Alike Characters
The 10-character version mixes uppercase letters with digits, and a few of them are almost indistinguishable in print. The DMV specifically warns that an uppercase “I” can look like the number “1,” and an uppercase “O” can look like a zero.2New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. That’s one of the most common reasons people get locked out of DMV online services.
Document Number vs. DMV ID Number
These get mixed up constantly, and mixing them up will stop any online transaction cold.
Your DMV ID number, sometimes called the Client ID, is the 9-digit number printed on the front of the card. The document number identifies the card itself, not the person. It’s 8 or 10 characters, usually on the back, and a new one is assigned every time a card is produced. Many forms ask for both numbers, so having the distinction clear in your head saves real time.
Why the Number Changes with Each New Card
Every license, permit, and non-driver ID the DMV produces gets its own document number, so a renewal or replacement always arrives with a fresh code.2New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. That’s how the state confirms you’re presenting your current credential, and it’s why finding an old card in a drawer won’t help you complete an online transaction. The same holds true when you upgrade card types. If you move from a Standard license to a REAL ID, your 9-digit DMV ID number stays the same, but you get a new document number because a new physical card is produced.
When You’ll Be Asked for the Document Number
MyDMV Account Setup
To link a MyDMV account to your NY.gov ID, you need to enter your 9-digit DMV ID number and the 8- or 10-character document number from your most recently issued card, along with the last four digits of your Social Security number, your date of birth, and the ZIP code the DMV has on file for you.3New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Voter Registration

If you can’t provide a DMV number or a Social Security number, you can submit a copy of a photo ID, a utility bill, a bank statement, or a government document that shows your name and address.
E-Verify Employment Checks
Employers using the federal E-Verify system may need your document number to confirm work eligibility. In states that participate in the RIDE program, the employer enters the document number from a driver license or state ID, and E-Verify runs it against DMV records. If Your Card Is Lost or Stolen

The replacement arrives with a new document number, and the old one stops working automatically.
Because of that automatic invalidation, if you kept a photo or a note of your document number from a card you’ve since replaced, it won’t get you into MyDMV or through voter registration. Pull out the current card and read the number off the back.
