The NY road test is the final exam for a New York driver’s license: you bring the right paperwork and a road-legal car to a DMV test site, drive a short route with an examiner scoring your performance, and pass by finishing with 30 points or fewer on the evaluation sheet. Your learner permit fee already covers your first two attempts, so the test itself costs nothing extra unless you need a third try.
Before You Can Schedule
You need a valid New York learner permit in hand. If you’re under 18, you must hold that permit for at least six months before you’re eligible to test. Adults 18 and older have no mandatory waiting period once they’ve passed the written exam and finished pre-licensing education.
Every Class D or Class M applicant has to complete either the five-hour pre-licensing course or a state-approved driver education program. The pre-licensing course produces an MV-278 certificate. High school and college students who finish the state’s 48-hour driver education program get a Student Certificate of Completion instead. How to Schedule
Book through the DMV’s online Road Skills Scheduling system or the automated phone line. You’ll enter your client ID number and pre-licensing certificate number, choose a region, and pick from the available dates. What to Bring on Test Day
The DMV is strict. Miss a single item and the appointment is canceled at the site. You need:
- Your physical photo learner permit. Mobile ID is not accepted, and the same rule applies to your accompanying driver’s license.
- The original MV-278 pre-licensing certificate or Student Certificate of Completion. Copies do not count.
- Glasses or contacts if your permit requires them.
- A signed MV-262 if you’re under 18.
- A vehicle with valid New York registration, a current inspection sticker on the windshield, and proof of insurance inside the car.
- An accompanying licensed driver, and no other passengers.

Who Can Ride With You
The accompanying driver’s minimum age depends on who’s actually driving to the test site. If someone else is driving you there, that person needs to be at least 18. If you’re driving yourself on your permit, the supervising driver has to be at least 21. What Happens During the Test
The examiner checks your documents and vehicle, gets in the passenger seat, and directs you through a short route on public streets around the test site. There’s no closed course. The examiner gives directions but no coaching or feedback while you drive.
Parallel parking appears on every New York road test. You have to pull into the space and finish within roughly one foot of the curb without excessive back-and-forth.7New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. The rest of the drive is ordinary traffic, evaluated for smooth acceleration and braking, correct signal use, safe following distance, appropriate speed, lane positioning, and how you handle pedestrians and changing signals. If your car has blind-spot monitoring or lane-departure alerts, don’t rely on them. The examiner wants to see you physically turn your head before every lane change and merge. A beep from a sensor is not a shoulder check.
How Scoring Works
The evaluation sheet has 31 error categories. Each mistake costs 5, 10, or 15 points depending on severity. Thirty points or fewer passes. Thirty-one fails.
- 5-point errors include failing to signal, checking mirrors without also checking your blind spot, turning slightly wide or short, and taking extra maneuvers on a three-point turn.
- 10-point errors include poor judgment at intersections, inattention to signs or lane markings, following too closely, poor engine control, abrupt braking, and failing to observe when changing lanes.
- 15-point errors include inability to parallel park or complete a three-point turn, excessive speed for conditions, driving too slowly, failing to yield to pedestrians, and poor steering control.
The arithmetic matters. Two 15-point errors put you at 30, which still passes; a third mistake of any weight fails you. Six 5-point slip-ups also total 30. The scoring punishes bad judgment and loss of vehicle control much harder than small technical mistakes.
Getting Your Results

If you pass, download and print a Road Test Receipt from the portal. Carried with your learner permit, that receipt is your temporary authorization to drive while your permanent license is being produced. If You Fail
Your original permit fee covers two road test attempts. If you fail both, you pay $10 for two more attempts before you can reschedule.4New York State. Schedule a Road Test There’s no state-imposed waiting period between attempts, but appointment availability often adds weeks on its own. Use the gap to work on whatever the score sheet flagged. Parking and three-point turns are easy to drill in an empty lot; intersection and yielding errors usually mean more practice in real traffic.
If You’re Under 18: Junior License Limits
Passing the road test before age 18 earns a Class DJ or MJ junior license, not a full adult license, and the restrictions vary sharply by region.9New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. The Graduated License Law and Restrictions for Drivers Under 18
Upstate, you may drive unsupervised between 5 AM and 9 PM with no more than one non-family passenger under 21. Between 9 PM and 5 AM, unsupervised driving is limited to a direct route between home and work or a school course; other nighttime trips require a licensed driver at least 21 in the car.
In New York City, a Class DJ or MJ holder cannot drive anywhere in the five boroughs, period. The only exception is a 17-year-old who completed the state’s driver education program and holds a Class D adult license through that route.
On Long Island, Nassau and Suffolk counties generally require a supervising driver at all times for junior license holders, with limited exceptions.
