NYC REAL ID Requirements: Documents, Costs, and How to Apply

To meet the NYC REAL ID requirements, you bring one proof of identity and legal presence, proof of your Social Security number, and two separate proofs of New York residency to a DMV office in person, fill out Form MV-44, and pay your normal license transaction fee — there is no extra charge for the REAL ID itself.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Enhanced or REAL ID The finished card looks like a standard New York license but carries a gold star in the upper right corner. TSA began enforcing the requirement at airport checkpoints on May 7, 2025, so a standard New York license on its own will no longer get you onto a domestic flight.2Transportation Security Administration. Documents You Need to Bring

The DMV wants originals in three categories: identity and legal presence, Social Security number, and two separate proofs that you live in New York. Photocopies are not accepted. The checklist on Form ID-44 spells out exactly what qualifies in each category.3New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. ID-44 – Proof of Identity and Residency

Proof of Identity and Legal Presence

One document has to cover both who you are and your legal status in the United States. For citizens, that usually means a U.S. passport, a birth certificate, or a certificate of citizenship. Non-citizens can use a permanent resident card, an Employment Authorization Card (I-766), or a foreign passport with valid visa documentation. The name on this document must match the name you want printed on the card.

Social Security Number

An original Social Security card is the simplest option. The DMV also accepts a W-2, an SSA-1099, or a pay stub that shows your full nine-digit number.3New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. ID-44 – Proof of Identity and Residency If you don’t have any of those, you can write the number on your MV-44 application, but that option does not work for an Enhanced credential.

Two Proofs of New York Residency

You need two separate documents showing your current New York address. P.O. boxes don’t qualify. Common options include a bank statement, a pay stub, a utility bill, or your existing New York license or permit. Electronic documents like online utility bills or credit card statements are allowed only if you bring a printed copy to the counter.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Enhanced or REAL ID

If Your Names Don’t Match

When the name on your birth certificate doesn’t match the name on your Social Security card or other identity document, you need proof of every change in between. A marriage certificate for a name change at marriage, a divorce decree if you changed it again, and so on. The chain from your birth name to your current legal name has to be unbroken, and every link has to be an original or a government-issued certified copy.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. What It Costs

There is no REAL ID surcharge.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Enhanced or REAL ID What you actually pay depends on when you upgrade. If your license is already up for renewal, you pay the standard renewal fee and the REAL ID is bundled in. If you want the upgrade before your renewal comes around, you pay the $17.50 replacement fee.4New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Driver License and Learner Permit Fees and Refunds Either way, there is no separate line for the REAL ID itself. An Enhanced license adds $30 on top of whatever transaction fee applies.

Applying in Person at a NYC DMV Office

REAL ID applications have to be handled in person. You cannot do this online or by mail. Download Form MV-44 from the DMV website or pick it up at any office and fill it out before you go.5New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Application for Permit, Driver License or Non-Driver ID Card

Make a reservation. The DMV strongly encourages appointments, and at busy NYC offices only reservation holders may be allowed inside during high-traffic periods.6New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. DMV Office Locations There are offices in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island, and you can book a slot through the state’s online reservation system.

At the counter, a clerk checks your documents against federal verification requirements. You take a vision test and have a new photo taken. When everything clears, you leave with a temporary paper document valid for 60 days.7New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Renew a Driver License One thing to know: that temporary paper is not accepted at TSA checkpoints. If you’re flying before the permanent card arrives, bring your passport or another TSA-accepted ID.

The permanent card with the gold star is produced at a central facility and mailed to the address on file, usually within about two weeks. It arrives in a plain envelope, so watch your mail.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Enhanced or REAL ID

REAL ID or Enhanced License

New York offers two upgraded credentials. A REAL ID carries a gold star and covers domestic flights and federal facility access. An Enhanced license carries an American flag, does everything a REAL ID does, and also works as a border-crossing document for returning to the U.S. by land or sea from Canada, Mexico, and some Caribbean countries.1New York State Department of Motor Vehicles. Enhanced or REAL ID The Enhanced card contains an RFID chip that border agents scan at land crossings; it does not replace a passport for international air travel. Only U.S. citizens who are New York residents can apply for the Enhanced version. If you never cross the Canadian or Mexican border by car or ferry, the REAL ID is the cheaper choice.

If You Already Have a Passport

You do not have to upgrade your license at all. A valid U.S. passport or passport card gets you through TSA and into federal buildings on its own. The same is true of several other federally accepted credentials, including DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST), a U.S. military ID, a permanent resident card, and a federally recognized tribal photo ID.8Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If your only government photo ID is a standard New York license, upgrading is the straightforward route.

How to Tell If Your Current Card Already Qualifies

Check the upper right corner. A gold or black star means your card is already REAL ID-compliant and you don’t need to do anything.9USAGov. How to Get a REAL ID and Use It for Travel An American flag means you have an Enhanced license, which is also compliant. If you see neither, your card is a standard New York license and won’t clear a TSA checkpoint on its own.
