NYS STAR Credit Direct Deposit: Enrollment, Timing, and Issues

To receive your NYS STAR credit by direct deposit, enroll through the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance’s Homeowner Benefit Portal with your bank’s routing number and your account number. Enrollment takes a few minutes, and once it’s set, the deposit instructions carry forward each year automatically.1Department of Taxation and Finance. How to Enroll

Have two things in front of you before you start: your bank’s nine-digit routing number and your account number. Either a checking or savings account works. Both numbers appear on a paper check or inside your bank’s online portal.2New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. STAR Credit Direct Deposit

The enrollment itself runs through the Tax Department’s Individual Online Services portal:

  • Log in to your Individual Online Services account. If you don’t have one, create it with a valid email address and verify your identity.
  • Open the Services menu (the three-line icon in the upper-left corner) and choose Real property tax.
  • From that menu, select Homeowner Benefit Portal.
  • Click Actions, then Enroll in or edit Direct Deposit. Enter your routing number and account number, and submit.

You won’t need to re-enroll in later years unless you change bank accounts or the ownership of your home changes.1Department of Taxation and Finance. Register for the School Tax Relief (STAR) Credit

Direct Deposit Is Only for the STAR Credit, Not the Exemption

One eligibility rule trips people up. Direct deposit is only available if you receive the STAR credit, which the state pays to you as a separate check or deposit. It is not available for the STAR exemption, which shows up as a reduction already applied to your school tax bill by your local assessor. If your bill lists a STAR savings subtracted from the amount owed, you’re on the exemption and cannot enroll in direct deposit for that year.

Homeowners who still hold the exemption can voluntarily switch to the credit by registering through the Tax Department’s online portal, which also opens up direct deposit as a delivery option.4Department of Taxation and Finance. Changing Your Bank Account

If you switch banks or want the credit sent to a different account, use the same path as the initial enrollment. Log in to Individual Online Services, open the Homeowner Benefit Portal, and choose Enroll in or edit Direct Deposit from the Actions menu. Enter the new routing and account numbers and submit.3Department of Taxation and Finance. Enroll in the STAR Credit Direct Deposit Program

Make the update well ahead of your school district’s tax deadline so the system has time to process it. If a direct deposit fails because the bank information is wrong, the state will mail a paper check to the address on file instead, which adds time.

When the Deposit Arrives

STAR credit payments go out before each school district’s tax payment deadline, so the timing depends on where you live. Some districts have fall deadlines, others earlier in the year. The Tax Department publishes a STAR Credit Delivery Schedule on its website where you can look up the expected issue date for your area.3Department of Taxation and Finance. If Your Payment Doesn’t Show Up

If the delivery schedule shows credits have been issued in your area and nothing has reached you, start with your school tax bill. If a STAR exemption was already applied there, that is your STAR benefit for the year and no credit will follow. The Tax Department’s Property Tax Credit Lookup tool shows whether your credit has been issued and lists prior years’ payments.5Department of Taxation and Finance. STAR Credit Delivery Schedule

If the lookup confirms the credit was issued but you never received it, check the bank information in the Homeowner Benefit Portal. A mismatched routing or account number is the most common cause of a failed deposit. From there, contact the Department of Taxation and Finance to flag the issue and request reissuance.
