Oconee County Sales Tax: SC and GA Rates, Holidays, and Penalties

The sales tax rate in Oconee County depends on which state you’re in. In Oconee County, South Carolina, the combined rate is 6%, which is just the state tax with no local add-on currently in effect.1South Carolina Department of Revenue. Sales and Use Tax Index In Oconee County, Georgia, the combined rate is 8%, made up of the 4% state tax plus four separate voter-approved local taxes of 1% each.2Justia Law. Georgia Code 48-8-30 – Imposition, Rate, and Collection of Tax That two-point gap compounds quickly on big-ticket items, so the first thing to confirm is which Oconee you’re buying in.

The South Carolina Rate

South Carolina charges 6% on most retail sales of tangible goods.3South Carolina Department of Revenue. State law gives the county room to add more. Counties can impose up to 1% through a Local Option Sales Tax and another 1% through a Capital Project Sales Tax, each requiring voter approval by referendum.4South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code Title 4 Chapter 10 – Local Sales and Use Tax If voters ever approved both, the Oconee County rate would climb to 8%. Short-term lodging also carries a separate state accommodations tax on top of the regular 6%, so cabin and hotel stays cost more than the headline rate suggests.5South Carolina Department of Revenue. The Georgia Rate and What Builds It

Georgia’s state tax is 4%.2Justia Law. Georgia Code 48-8-30 – Imposition, Rate, and Collection of Tax Oconee County voters have added four more percentage points through separate local levies, each with its own purpose and its own expiration date:

  • Local Option Sales Tax (LOST), 1%. Shared between the county and its municipalities for general government operations.6Justia Law. Georgia Code 48-8-82 – Authority to Impose Joint Sales and Use Tax
  • Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST), 1%. Dedicated to capital projects such as roads, bridges, public buildings, and emergency vehicles; must be renewed by voters when it expires.7Justia Law. Georgia Code 48-8-110 – Definitions
  • Education SPLOST (ESPLOST), 1%. Funds school construction, technology, and other education capital spending.
  • Transportation SPLOST (TSPLOST), 1%. Pays for road widening, intersection work, and bridge repairs.8Oconee County, Georgia. 2024 Annual TSPLOST Report

Because each of these is on its own cycle, the combined rate can shift when voters decline to renew a levy or approve a new one. The Georgia Department of Revenue publishes updated county rate charts each quarter, which is worth a quick look before any large purchase.

Groceries and Prescriptions

The headline rate is not what you pay on food or medicine, and the two counties handle these differently enough to matter.

Prescription drugs are fully exempt in both states. South Carolina’s exemption covers prescription medicine and prosthetic devices, plus certain cancer and respiratory medications.9South Carolina Department of Revenue. SC Revenue Ruling 03-2 – Medicines, Prosthetic Devices and Other Medical Supplies Georgia’s exemption covers prescription drugs, contact lenses, glasses, and nonprescription insulin, with no state or local tax applied.10Georgia Department of Audits and Accounts. Groceries are where the two counties split. South Carolina exempts unprepared food from the 6% state tax, and any local tax (if one existed) would still apply.11South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code Title 12 Chapter 36 – Sales and Use Tax Act Since Oconee County, SC, has no local tax, groceries there are effectively tax-free. Georgia also exempts groceries from the 4% state tax, but local taxes still apply, so Oconee County, Georgia, shoppers pay the full 4% local portion on their grocery bill. Prepared food from restaurants and delis is taxed at the full combined rate in both counties.

Sales Tax Holidays

South Carolina has historically held a sales tax holiday in early August, temporarily exempting clothing, school supplies, computers, and related accessories. For 2026, the legislature has considered expanding the holiday to the full month of August and adding a disaster preparedness weekend in early May. The proposed disaster-prep list would include batteries, flashlights, first-aid kits, and similar items priced at $60 or less, along with the first $1,000 of a portable generator’s price. These proposals need legislative approval, so confirm the final dates and item list on the South Carolina Department of Revenue site before planning around them.

Georgia does not currently hold a statewide sales tax holiday. Oconee County, Georgia, shoppers get no equivalent break.

What You Owe on Out-of-State and Online Purchases

When sales tax isn’t collected at checkout, you owe use tax at the same rate you’d pay locally. This applies to out-of-state retailers who don’t charge the tax, private-party purchases, and anything else brought into the county to be used or stored here.

South Carolina requires individuals and businesses to report use tax on goods brought into the state.12South Carolina Department of Revenue. Use Tax Businesses file through MyDORWAY; individuals can report on their state income tax return. Georgia works the same way and gives you credit for any sales tax already paid to another state.13Georgia Department of Revenue. What is Subject to Sales and Use Tax If you paid 5% elsewhere and the Oconee County, Georgia, rate is 8%, you owe the 3% difference.

Most online shopping is already handled for you. Marketplace facilitator laws in both states require platforms like Amazon, eBay, and Etsy to collect and remit sales tax on third-party sales, so the correct rate is usually built into checkout. Independent out-of-state sellers must register and collect once they cross $100,000 in annual sales into either state; Georgia adds an alternative trigger of 200 or more separate transactions.

Penalties for Businesses That File or Pay Late

If you collect sales tax as a business, the penalties for missing a deadline add up fast. South Carolina charges 5% of the tax owed for the first month a return is late, plus another 5% for each additional month, capped at 25%.14South Carolina Legislature. South Carolina Code 12-54-43 – Civil Penalties and Interest Filing on time but paying late is gentler: half a percent per month, same 25% cap. Interest runs on top of both.

Georgia uses a similar structure, 5% per month or partial month a return is delinquent, with a combined 25% cap for late filing and late payment, plus interest.15Legal Information Institute. Georgia Regulations 560-7-8-.10 – Penalties for Late Filing If cash is tight, file on time anyway and pay what you can. The filing penalty is the steeper one in South Carolina, and getting the return in substantially limits the damage.
