You can get an Ohio digital driver’s license by adding your current license or state ID to Apple Wallet on a compatible iPhone or Apple Watch. Setup is free, takes a few minutes, and does not replace the plastic card you are still legally required to carry when driving in Ohio.
What You Need Before You Start
The Ohio Mobile ID currently works only with Apple Wallet. Google Wallet does not yet support it. You need an iPhone 8 or later running iOS 16.5 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later running watchOS 9.5 or later.1Apple Support. You also need a valid, unexpired Ohio driver’s license or state ID. Keep the physical card nearby, because the setup process asks you to scan both sides. There is no fee to add the credential or to use it afterward.2Ohio BMV. Driver License and ID Cards – Ohio Mobile ID
How to Add Your License to Apple Wallet
Open the Wallet app, tap the plus icon, and choose the driver’s license or state ID option. The app walks you through photographing the front and back of your card. Line up the card inside the on-screen frame and the software picks up the barcode and security features automatically.
Next comes facial verification. The app asks you to tilt your chin, turn your head, and make a few other movements so it can confirm you are a live person and not a photo or video. The check runs on your device, and the encrypted result goes to the Ohio BMV for approval. When the state signs off, you get a notification and the license appears in Wallet.
Where You Can Use the Ohio Mobile ID
The most practical use today is airport security. TSA accepts Ohio’s mobile driver’s license at participating checkpoints nationwide.3Transportation Security Administration. Some Ohio businesses also use it for age verification on purchases like alcohol or tobacco. The verification has to go through a compliant tap reader or the free Ohio Mobile ID Check app; a clerk simply looking at your phone screen does not count, because the system relies on a cryptographic signature from the BMV to confirm the data is real.5Ohio Department of Commerce. One advantage of the format is selective sharing. A bar checking your age gets a yes-or-no answer on whether you are over 21 without seeing your address or license number.6InnovateOhio. Where It Does Not Work
Knowing the gaps matters, because leaving the physical card at home in the wrong situation creates real problems.
Traffic Stops
Ohio Revised Code 4507.35 requires every driver to display a license on demand to any peace officer, and the statute does not mention digital credentials.7Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Code 4507.35 – Duty to Display License or Furnish Satisfactory Proof of License Upon Demand The BMV’s own terms warn that “a physical Credential may be required to be presented in certain circumstances, including, but not limited to, interactions with law enforcement.”8Ohio BMV. Voting
Ohio’s voter ID rules call for physical documents, and the mobile credential does not qualify at polling places. Bring your plastic license or another approved ID.
Car Rentals
Major rental companies, including National, do not accept digital driver’s licenses for U.S. residents.9National Car Rental. What Is the Drivers License Policy When Renting a Vehicle With National Other large agencies follow similar policies. You need the card at the counter.
If Your Phone Is Lost, Stolen, or Dead
A lost or stolen phone can be managed remotely through Apple Wallet, the same way you would disable a credit card. The mobile ID can only live on one device at a time, so adding it to a new phone automatically turns it off on the old one.2Ohio BMV. Driver License and ID Cards – Ohio Mobile ID
A dead battery is more routine. With Express Mode enabled, the mobile ID can still work for up to five hours in Power Reserve after an iPhone shuts down from low battery. If you turn the phone off yourself, that reserve does not kick in. Relying on a phone for identification is a gamble, which is one more reason to keep the physical card on you.
The Cost of Driving Without Your Physical License
Failing to display your license under 4507.35 is an unclassified misdemeanor. The statute sets its own penalty: a fine of up to $1,000 and possible community service of up to 500 hours, with no jail time for a first or second offense.7Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Code 4507.35 – Duty to Display License or Furnish Satisfactory Proof of License Upon Demand Court costs are added on top.
Repeat violations are far more serious. Two or more convictions under 4507.35 within three years bump the next offense up to a first-degree misdemeanor, which carries up to 180 days in jail.10Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Code 2929.24 – Definite Jail Terms for Misdemeanors The digital license is a useful tool at the airport and at age-verified checkouts. It is not a substitute for the card in your wallet.
