Ohio Estimated Tax Payments: Deadlines, Amounts, and How to Pay

Ohio estimated tax payments are quarterly prepayments you send to the Ohio Department of Taxation when your withholding won’t cover what you’ll owe at filing. You’re required to make them if your expected Ohio tax liability, minus any withholding, will exceed $500 for the year.1Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 5747.09 – Declaration of Estimated Taxes If a regular paycheck covers your tax and the leftover balance is $500 or less, you don’t need to file a declaration or send anything in between April returns.

Who Has to Pay

The $500 threshold mainly catches people whose income isn’t fully run through an employer’s payroll system. Common triggers:

  • Freelance or independent contractor income
  • Profits from a sole proprietorship or partnership
  • Rental income
  • Gains from selling stocks or other investments
  • Pension income without adequate withholding

A one-time event can also pull you in for a single year. If you sold property and the gain pushes your remaining Ohio liability past $500, you may owe estimated payments that year even if you’ve never made them before.

The Four Deadlines

Ohio uses the same quarterly schedule as the IRS. For tax year 2026 the dates are:

  • First quarter: April 15, 2026
  • Second quarter: June 15, 2026
  • Third quarter: September 15, 2026
  • Fourth quarter: January 15, 20272Ohio Department of Taxation. Estimated Payments

When a due date lands on a weekend or legal holiday, it shifts to the next business day.3Ohio Department of Taxation. Due Dates A payment is on time if you authorize it online or postmark it by the deadline. Watch the spacing: only two months separate the April and June installments, and people new to estimated taxes often miss the June 15 due date because it arrives so soon after the April filing crunch.

How Much to Pay Each Quarter

Ohio gives you two safe harbors. Hit either one with your total payments for the year and no underpayment penalty applies:

Each quarterly installment is 25% of whichever safe harbor amount is smaller.1Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 5747.09 – Declaration of Estimated Taxes The prior-year method is usually the simpler one because the number is already sitting on last year’s return. The 90% current-year method requires you to forecast accurately, which gets rough if your income swings.

To size the check from scratch, start with your expected Ohio taxable income for the year. For tax year 2025, Ohio’s top rate on nonbusiness income above $100,000 was 3.125%, with lower graduated rates on income below that line.4Ohio Department of Taxation. What’s New Apply the rates to your expected taxable income, subtract credits you expect to claim, then subtract whatever Ohio withholding your employers will remit. If the remainder tops $500, divide by four. You don’t have to split payments evenly if your income is seasonal, but uneven payments make the penalty math harder if you fall short, so most filers find equal quarters easier to manage.

How to Pay

Online

The Ohio Department of Taxation accepts estimated payments through the OH|TAX eServices portal and through its Guest Payment Service. Both let you pay by electronic check drawn from a checking or savings account at no charge, and you can schedule the debit for a future date. Credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express) also work, but ACI Payments charges a convenience fee of 2.65% of the payment or $1, whichever is greater; none of that fee goes to the state.5Ohio Department of Taxation. Payments can take two or three business days to show up on your OH|TAX dashboard, but the effective date is the date you authorize the transaction.5Ohio Department of Taxation. By Mail With the OUPC

Paper payments go in with the Ohio Universal Payment Coupon (OUPC), which replaced the old IT 1040ES voucher.6Ohio Department of Taxation. Tax Forms For estimated payments, mark the coupon type as “IT ES.” Fill in your Social Security Number, name, address, the tax year, and the payment amount, and print the first three letters of your last name in uppercase.7Ohio Department of Taxation. Make the check or money order payable to “Ohio Treasurer of State” and write the tax year, “IT 1040,” and the last four digits of your Social Security Number on the memo line. Never send cash. The mailing address is printed on the OUPC itself; always use the current year’s form, because Ohio updates P.O. boxes periodically.7Ohio Department of Taxation. What Underpayment Costs

Ohio doesn’t charge a flat underpayment penalty. It charges interest on each shortfall, running from the date the installment was due until the day you pay. For 2026 the statutory rate is 7%, calculated daily on the unpaid amount.8Ohio Department of Taxation. 2025 Ohio IT/SD 2210 The rate resets each year to the federal short-term rate plus three percentage points, rounded to the nearest whole percent.9Ohio Legislative Service Commission. Ohio Revised Code 5703.47 – Definition of Federal Short Term Rate

No interest applies if any of these are true:

  • Your total payments equal or exceed 90% of your current-year Ohio tax.
  • Your total payments equal or exceed 100% of your prior-year Ohio tax, and that prior year was a full 12-month year with a filed return.
  • Your remaining balance after withholding is $500 or less.8Ohio Department of Taxation. 2025 Ohio IT/SD 2210

If you do owe interest, Ohio calculates it on Form IT/SD 2210, and most tax software completes the form automatically with the annual return.

School District Estimated Tax

Ohio’s school district income tax is a separate levy that trips up a lot of residents. If you live in a taxing school district and your district tax liability after withholding will top $500, you owe school district estimated payments on the same quarterly schedule. The OUPC handles them with the coupon type set to “SD ES.”2Ohio Department of Taxation. Estimated Payments

Not every district levies the tax, and rates vary. You can look up your district on the Ohio Department of Taxation’s website. Missing a school district installment triggers the same interest charge as missing a state installment, so if you owe both, cover both every quarter.

Applying an Overpayment to Next Year

If you overpay for the year, you can direct the refund forward instead of taking it back. Ohio treats the carryforward as an estimated payment, and it counts toward your first-quarter obligation for the following year.8Ohio Department of Taxation. 2025 Ohio IT/SD 2210 You make the election on your annual IT 1040 return. Once you carry an amount forward you generally cannot reverse the choice and request a refund, so only roll over what you’re confident you’ll need.

Federal Payments Are Separate

Ohio estimated payments cover only your state tax. If you expect to owe more than $1,000 in federal income tax after withholding and refundable credits, the IRS requires its own quarterly payments on the same calendar.10Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Tax for Individuals The federal safe harbors look like Ohio’s at first (90% of current-year or 100% of prior-year tax) but if your prior-year adjusted gross income exceeded $150,000, the federal prior-year safe harbor rises to 110%. Ohio has no comparable high-income bump; the 100% prior-year safe harbor applies to all Ohio taxpayers regardless of income.

Self-employed filers also owe federal self-employment tax at 15.3% of net earnings for Social Security and Medicare. That obligation stacks on top of federal and Ohio income tax. When you set aside money for each quarter, budget for all three, plus school district tax if your district imposes one.
